  1. >Lucy sat in the van between her sister Lynn and brother Lincoln
  2. >in the Loud House, haircuts happened all at once
  3. >It was just easier that way
  4. >Lucy was quiet
  5. >Nothing unusual about that, except this time it wasn't because she was being her normal, observant self.
  6. >She was nervous
  7. >Borderline terrified
  8. >She nearly walked across the street into traffic earlier that week
  9. >Though she insisted it wasn't the culprit, Mom and Dad were more or less forcing her to get the hair out of her eyes
  10. >Permanently
  11. >She had confided in Lynn about her fears earlier today, but she took them about as seriously as she would take an astronomy test.
  12. >"Luce, it's just hair, what's the big deal? It'll grow back, yeesh."
  13. >She turned to Lincoln.
  14. >He was absent mindedly staring out the window
  15. >His hair was getting fairly shaggy too
  16. >If she knew one thing, it was that Lincoln would always give her an ear, no matter how trivial her fears or worries
  17. >Lucy decided to put that to the test
  18. >"Lincoln?"
  19. >Her voice snapped him out of his daze.
  20. >"Yeah, Lucy?"
  21. >He turned to her, smiling the inviting grin that put her at ease.
  22. >"I'm... I'm kind of nervous about this."
  23. >Lincoln raised an eyebrow
  24. >"Nervous about what?"
  25. >"Getting a haircut."
  26. >Lincoln gasped.
  27. >Normally Lucy only tagged along on haircut days to have her edges trimmed up at most.
  28. >"You mean, you're actually—"
  29. >"Yeah,"
  30. >She sighed.
  31. >"Moms making me get my bangs cut."
  32. >At first, Lincoln was excited.
  33. >None of the Louds had seen Lucy's eyes since she got into her... phase.
  34. >Then he noticed her chin beginning to quiver.
  35. >He put a hand on her shoulder
  36. >"Hey, there's nothing to be nervous about!"
  37. >Lucy rubbed the tears from her eyes with her striped sleeves.
  38. >"It's not fair, I like my hair the way it is," she whimpered
  39. >"Lucy, they're not cutting it off, just shortening it!"
  40. >his platitudes didn't seem to help
  41. >"I'm going to look stupid with normal hair." Lucy sniffed.
  42. >"Everyone's going to laugh at me."
  43. >Lincoln thought carefully
  44. >"No way, your eyes are too pretty to hide behind your hair!"
  45. >However, his sisters could be pretty cruel
  46. >"Tell you what, I know of a sure fire way to make sure none of our sisters laugh."
  47. >Lucy sniffed up her silent tears.
  48. >"How?"
  49. >Lincoln smiled.
  50. >"Just wait and see."
  51. >Vanzilla had just pulled into the barber shop as Lincoln finished hinting at his plan
  52. >Each Loud filed out as Lucy stuck to the back of the line, as though she was on her way to the electric chair.
  53. >Before she knew it, it was Lucy's turn in the chair
  54. >Mrs. Loud told the barber what needed to happen
  55. >Lucy's heart was pounding in her chest.
  56. >She could hear the shears cutting through her own private curtain
  57. >The one that shielded her eyes from the things she hated about the world.
  58. >Cut by cut, the curtain fell away.
  59. >She squinted at the intrusive light shining in her eyes.
  60. >Soon, it was over.
  61. >While the barber was digging around for the hand mirror, Lucy's eyes were shut tight
  62. >She was already imagining her sisters laughing at her and her hideous haircut.
  63. >Strangely, there was laughter, but not directed at her.
  64. >She opened one eye
  65. >Her sisters had all gathered around the chair next to her.
  66. >The one Lincoln had climbed into
  67. >She leaned over to see what all the fuss was about
  68. >Lincoln had gotten a mohawk
  69. >His sisters were nearly hysterical
  70. >He turned to Lucy and smiled his same, comforting smile.
  71. >He winked at her.
  72. >She blushed as the barber returned with the mirror
  73. >He held it in front of Lucy
  74. >She smiled at her reflection
  75. >Lincoln was right.
  76. >She did have pretty eyes.
