Niels Bohr's main research included:
- Improvement of the Rutherford planetary model for the atom
- Integration of the existing atom model with Max Planck's quantum theory
- Establishment of the principle of complementarity (items can have mutually exclusive properties such as wave and particle stream)

Main properties of the Bohr model:
- Electrons are orbiting the atom's nucleus in stable orbits or energy levels
- The jump from one orbit (energy level) to another required discrete amounts (quants) of energy
- Each orbit can hold only certain amount of electrons
