  85. Bio: A young woman whose parents were hoping for a boy. Born to an Izzarran miller family, Sam (real name Samantha, though she dislikes it) had a childhood that was not especially wealthy, but not especially poor either. Her family's mill was always busy grinding wheat into flour for the local farmers, and though she was expected to work hard and help out she did have some free time. Much of this time was spent watching the local garrison as they went through their daily drills. She was especially fascinated by the musicians; boys (and sometimes girls) not much older than herself who nonetheless were vital in keeping the spirits of the soldiers high and guiding them through the chaos of battle. By watching them closely and mimicking their motions with rocks and sticks, Sam eventually memorized every single rhythm and cadence the military performers used and began to invent her own as a hobby.

  87. Years passed, and King Isaac launched his unexplained invasion of Kalart. Much of the local garrison went off to fight, and never returned. When Mordo then launched its counter-invasion and the tides of war swept towards their particular patch of Izzarra, the desperate garrison commander sent out a call for brave men and women to hold the rampaging armies back. Sam, then at the tender age of 14, volunteered instantly, demonstrating her abilities to the satisfaction of the commander and earning her set of marching drums. The garrison then marched out to halt the enemy advance.

  89. The battle was a disaster. Though Sam and the other performers did their very best, morale was low and the Izzarran troops were quickly outfought, routed, then shattered by the disciplined Mordian soldiers. Sam herself, partnered up with the last company that still held their ground, played until the sword of a Mordian soldier slashed down across her cheekbone, sending her into darkness.

  91. When she awoke several days later, the war was over. A few surviving Izzarrans had managed to drag her to safety after the battle ended (the blood covering her face making her appear quite dead to invaders more interested in looting), though they could do little for her wound as the healers had all been captured or killed. It eventually healed on its own, but left a vicious scar down the side of her face - Sam was just grateful that the eye had been spared.

Sam decided not to return to her family; she fully intended to keep resisting the Mordian occupation in any way she could, and with her new distinct scar she could not risk being identified and exposing her mother and father to retaliatory actions. She now moves from one resistance group to another, keeping spirits up as best she can. In particular, one of her first bands was a certain cell operating in one of Izzarra's ports that caused quite a lot of trouble before the might of Mordo fell upon them.
