- Through his tri-goggles, Fisher could pick out a thread of twinkling laser light from an emitter on the rifle held by the tower’s lone guard, but he had no line of sight on the man himself. He watched the laser move back and forth, picturing the guard looking down his scope, hunting for targets.
- Then a short way down the hill, something moved in the bushes among the dissipating rain and the laser flickered. In a few seconds, the guard with the rifle moved to the tower’s edge and leaned into view, hoping to get a better look at the disturbance.
- He had no idea that Fisher was directly below him, aiming a loaded crossbow at his chest. With a few pounds of pressure on the trigger, the crossbow quarrel leapt away and silently embedded itself in the guard’s torso. The armor-piercing needle in the quarrel tip went through his flak vest, injecting a powerful dose of liquid tranquilizing agent straight into his bloodstream. Fisher heard him give an odd, breathy yelp, and the guard collapsed out of sight.
