- Chapter 1: The Hunt
- The lives of nobility do not lack excitement.
- Lights in the sprawling castle shine brilliantly, magnificent halls filled with lively chatter, lords and ladies dressed in finery dance hand in hand, their steps in synchronised harmony with the melodious music.
- The setting for this extravagant scene looked extremely inviting and warm to me.
- Dance partners may change, but the warmth and heat from holding someone close doesn’t.
- As the dance drew to its climax, the young noblewoman who had started the night with a measure of self-restraint had let down her defenses, and no longer rejected the gentleman’s advances, her lithe body pressed close to him, head resting on the broad expanse of his chest.
- “It’s getting a little dull here, shall we head to someplace quieter?”
- My arm wrapped around the curves of her slim waist, pulling her into an embrace as I leaned in and whispered those words seductively into her ear. She nodded eagerly and followed me away.
- The ancient castle has many secret doors and hidden passages. I led her to a restricted stairway which could only be accessed by servants in the castle, under the guise of a private rendezvous. Little did she know that I was luring her into a trap.
- Every castle has its nooks and crannies - rooms where even servants would rarely venture to, which were perfectly suited for trysts like these. The lady never raised any objections or questioned where we were, until two male servants barged in.
- “We...we were...”
- She hastily struggled out of my arms, clothes in disarray, her eyes pleading as she tried to preserve her dignity by hurriedly explaining the situation and begging them not to tell a soul what happened.
- The warmth of skin to skin contact began to dissipate, replaced by the coldness in the atmosphere again. I clicked my tongue in annoyance at the intrusion.
- “You guys are here too early.”
- “Sorry to interrupt, but Madam cannot wait any longer.”
- “The dance party isn’t even over yet and she’s already so impatient? Fine, do what you must.”
- “Yes.”
- “What are you all doing?! Let go of me! Help—“
- I watched the servants restrain the lady who wanted to escape, their trained hands knocking her unconscious and tying her up, before bringing her to the underground chambers for ceremonial purposes.
- Her blood - her life essence - would be inspected and extracted in a ceremony, to fill a bathtub which my 40 year-old Master Attendant would then bathe in to maintain her youth and beauty.
- My mission is to hunt and lure young maidens for my Master Attendant.
- At the castle balls. In the towns. During our travels...
- Wherever we may go, I will always respect my Attendant’s orders and fulfill her wishes. Except for one thing - the actual killing of the victims.
- Master Attendant summoned me in the cold confines of her underground chambers. In the dimly lit room illuminated only by a few candles, the coppery tang of blood engulfed my senses.
- A formation of 3 maiden corpses lay lifeless in the centre of the room, completely bled dry. The putrid stench of decomposition mixed with the stink of dried blood in that sealed up space was enough to make one feel like puking.
- For the longest time whenever I smelled blood, it would bring me back to this unsettling scene.
- Naturally, I refused to get my hands dirty from killing those maidens whom I deceived, or to assist her in bathing in their blood. Luckily, there were others who were willing to do so.
- “Then you shall bring me more ladies as compensation - besides, you like the feel of their skin against yours, don’t you, Bloody Mary?” Master Attendant prodded my chest teasingly with her folding fan, smiling from ear to ear.
- Yes, I love it.
- I can’t explain why, but ever since I was summoned, I can only seek warmth from human contact.
- Chapter 2: The Craving for Blood
- “Kill him, Bloody Mary.”
- “Why?”
- I shifted my gaze from the window to the servant kneeling on the floor begging for forgiveness from Master Attendant.
- Of course, I knew very well why she wanted to kill him - someone who made a terrible mistake should atone for it.
- After the Count’s death, no one dared to oppose the Countess who inherited the palace and his assets. Anyone who opposed her would have to be “punished”. I was given some concessions only because of my status as her food soul.
- However, by the looks of it now, it seems her patience is wearing thin.
- Master Attendant did not appear to be surprised by my question, but it frustrated her to the extent that she kicked away the servant clutching desperately at the hem of her skirt. Her tone was harsh.
- “Haven’t you heard? He did not watch over the girl you caught today and she has committed suicide.”
- “Isn’t that better?”
- “She was dead for more than an hour, her blood is no longer fresh or usable. We won’t be able to find a new girl at this time, so let’s just use him as a replacement for now.”
- “Where are the rest?”
- “We do not need anybody else, you are my food soul, you should do what you are instructed to do!”
- “Your wish is my command.”
- I made my move.
- I walked closer to the servant and dug my nails into his chest, gouging his heart out. Fresh blood spurted everywhere, and my face and clothes were not spared.
- I did not touch his body, yet the places where his blood flowed felt unnaturally warm. In particular, my hand in his chest cavity experienced a scorching heat that was hotter than anything I’d ever felt before.
- "This feeling..."
- I didn’t have time to process these new burning sensations when his heart stopped beating in my hands.
- "Bloody Mary! Stop wasting his blood!”
- The sharp voice of my Master Attendant brought me to my senses, as I looked into her green eyes to see the euphoria reflected in my own.
- "I understand now, Master Attendant! This warmth - I’m enlightened!"
- Once upon a time, I couldn’t comprehend why she would insist on using human blood.
- The blood of a dead person is ice-cold, can she really attain everlasting youth from it?
- All the time, my body was as cold as ice and only the heat from a human body could warm me up temporarily.
- However, once humans die, they will become like me, cold and lifeless with no trace of warmth.
- This is also one of the reasons why I was reluctant to kill people for my Master Attendant in the first place, I didn’t want to see that warmth disappear.
- But now I no longer cared.
- The moment that servant’s fresh blood spurted onto me, I felt an immense heat that was akin to the blazing rays of the sun, the feeling was so much more than what anyone could give me from skin contact alone.
- I need this warmth!
- From then on, I started hunting for more girls for both my Master Attendant and me. If one wasn’t enough, I would bring another.
- The only difference between the Countess and me is that I did not limit myself to females - I would seduce the strong men and extract their blood to compensate for the lack of blood from sharing.
- I found that those spirited men who tried to fight back had even warmer and more tantalising blood!
- As the days went by, I lost track of how many victims I had killed.
- Both the Countess and me started believing that her authority, together with my prowess, made for an unstoppable team.
- Until one day, another food soul made an appearance at the castle. And just like the legend of Icarus and his wings, everything ended up in tragedy.
- Chapter 3: The Search
- My Master Attendant was branded a witch after her death.
- In fairytales, the narrative is always about the prince trying to save the princess who was kidnapped by an evil witch, breaking into the castle full of traps and killing the witch before riding off with the princess for a happily ever after.
- People love this kind of naive storytelling - it’s disgusting. The witch is always the bad person, and the prince and princess are shining examples, flawless and loved.
- After my Master Attendant’s death, I left the castle, a castle once famous for its dance parties but because of the incident, no one dares to approach it anymore. It is but an empty, hollow shell which I am not interested in lingering, I thrive in places with people.
- I wandered from town to town mingling with mankind. Like a rolling stone, I seldom stayed in the same place for long. Not only because of my deceased Master Attendant’s history, but there was also another reason. I was looking for someone - the one whose blood ignited that burning sensation in me.
- Steak is a food soul just like me, but he has a level of hot-bloodedness that I have never seen before. The heat emanating from him is so much more potent than any human, and I covet it. I want him, his warmth, his blood, his everything. I will never be scared of the cold if I have him.
- The food soul named Red Wine is the one who killed my Master Attendant. He is not only a murderer, but he also won’t leave Steak alone. Unforgivable!
- With hatred in my heart, I looked for traces of Red Wine’s whereabouts, but he seemed to have disappeared together with Steak. Thus, I began to spread rumours in all the various towns I visited.
- (Italicised) Legendary vampire, feeds on human blood, hates sunlight and moves at night, has red eyes and sharp teeth...
- “Please let me know if you see somebody with these features.”
- “My master died in the same way as your Master, he must have been killed by that creature.”
- “She is still so young, just like my master.”
- “I will avenge those deaths for your sake if I ever find the creature.”
- I wonder if I should change the victim of my story from “Master” to “sister” to earn more pity points.
- Humans are so naive. With a carefully constructed sob story and a few tears shed, they will give you their full attention and sympathy.
- Those who lost their family members and those who face a fearful and unknown demon that they are unable to subdue will never reject offers of help.
- Alas, they will never know that the one who killed their family member and drained their blood dry is the same person who is presenting himself as a victim and offering them help — me.
- This way, it would be much faster to gather information than working alone without any leads.
- Finally, I found them.
- Chapter 4: Beginnings
- I originally didn’t intend to face them head-on.
- Steak wasn’t just travelling with Red Wine, there was also a female food soul called Gingerbread. I didn’t stand a chance of winning against the three of them.
- I tried on a few occasions to lure Red Wine away from them, but no matter how I plotted behind the scenes or hired others to distract him, he would not take the bait. It was as if he could read my intentions and wouldn’t allow me the chance to realize them.
- —— In his eyes, I was just a petty villain, my challenges unworthy of his time or attention.
- Unforgivable!
- This food soul who is practically glued to Steak, this smug scumbag that dares to look down on me!
- I must make him taste defeat and suffer the way he made me suffer!
- And then I will take that food soul who is my destined one and make him mine!
- It has been a long time since I returned to Master Attendant’s castle. It is now but a mere shadow of its former glory. The banquet hall that was once lively and bustling from the numerous dance parties is now gloomy and cold.
- The letter I sent out was delivered successfully to Steak, and the information contained within was enough to help him figure out that it was me who wrote it, and to come here.
- Despite me being unwilling to come back to the castle, this was also the place I was most familiar with, and every trap mechanism and secret passageway I could use to my advantage.
- “Please...listen to me, Steak.”
- Putting on a mask is my most familiar means of deception, and words are my arsenal which I use to make others let their guard down. I walked out of my hiding place behind the stone pillars, my expression just like the humans who had witnessed the death of a loved one, steps faltering and helpless as I tried to approach him.
- “I’ve been looking for you for a long time. I know Red Wine has been with you all this while. You’ve been deceived by him!
- He deceived my Master Attendant and used her parties as a ruse to find sacrifices to satiate his bloodlust! All those young maidens...and all those subsequent deaths, in actual fact are all his doing!
- Haven’t you heard the rumours circulating in the towns? Rumours of sharp fangs, blood-red eyes, a fear of sunlight, a thirst for blood - all those point to him!
- Don’t fall for his tricks or you could end up being his next sacrifice!”
- Steak didn’t speak, but the look in his eyes clearly indicated that he did not believe a single word I said.
- The distance between us was close enough that the poisonous dagger I was intending to paralyse him with was within targeted range, but not close enough to pierce his flesh.
- I sensed him preparing to attack and quickly retreated to the side of the nearby wall, pulling on a trap lever set up beforehand to unleash a stream of flames, blocking him off on the other side.
- Ah, stubborn fellow, why do you take his side? You would rather trust that nasty scumbag instead of giving me warmth?
- Isn’t he just like me, with a covetous desire for blood?
- I can help get rid of all your enemies, for you and only for you!
- Triggered by the warmth of the flames, the entrance to the cold and secret passage slowly creaked opened. I stole one last longing look at Steak before I left. I could feel his strength radiating a heat that burned brighter and hotter than the blazing flames which separated us.
- This is only the beginning, Steak.
- I definitely will not give up.
- Chapter 5: Bloody Mary
- Bloody Mary’s origin as a food soul wasn’t necessarily steeped in blood, but somehow his deceased Master Attendant’s cruel deeds and his own eventual wrongdoings all had some sort of connection to it.
- All warmth was transient.
- The roaring flames in a fireplace, the heat from human bodies, even fresh blood which could whip him up into a frenzy, only gave him finite warmth and short-lived satisfaction.
- After the death of his Master Attendant, Bloody Mary was displaced and wandered around from town to town. Even if he wouldn’t admit it, he could no longer bring himself to stay in the empty and cold cobwebbed castle.
- Winter came, and the fireplace in the little room of the inn he was staying in did nothing to dispel the cold surrounding him. He could only bear with the chill and wait for a passerby seeking refuge from the harsh weather to stop by, and use his blood to warm himself up.
- Whenever it was winter, he would think back on his first encounter with that hot-blooded food soul Steak.
- In the centre of the dance floor, holding tight to his carefully chosen victim, he locked eyes with the party gatecrasher who had burst onto the scene. At that moment, he could sense the fiery heat emanating from Steak’s body, a heat that could warm him forever for sure!
- Since that chance meeting and after his escape, Bloody Mary wasn’t in a hurry to get close to them again.
- He was biding his time, waiting for the rumours he spread about Red Wine to take their toll, and for an opportunity to strike.
- But he never got that opportunity, as his paths crossed with yet another food soul that he disliked and couldn’t wait to be rid of.
- This food soul came knocking on his door one rainy afternoon, dressed in priestly vestments.
- “You must be Bloody Mary.”
- In Bloody Mary’s view, that was barely an introduction and sounded rude. The stranger’s brusque tone was unwelcome and reminded him of a judge passing a sentence.
- “Who are you?”
- “I am an agent of God.”
- Bloody Mary had never heard anything so ridiculous in his life. He leaned against the door and laughed so hard and uncontrollably that his nightgown which was originally hanging loosely on his body slipped from his shoulders to his arm.
- “Did I do something wrong, Father?”
- “20 years ago, you murdered 2 young ladies in Vita (?) Town, and 10 years later killed two others when you passed by that area again. 8 years ago, you killed more than one man in Parisel. ...You attributed their causes of death to rumours of vampiric activity, with the intention of framing ——“
- Bloody Mary listened to the food soul meticulously list off the body count of his numerous victims with interest as he leaned back against the door.
- “For you to have researched my background so thoroughly, do you secretly have a crush on me, Father?”
- The food soul was taken aback by Bloody Mary’s crude comment, and was stunned for a moment.
- A moment was all Bloody Mary needed as he immediately slammed the door shut in the food soul’s face and quickly fled.
- But his pursuer had no intention of letting him succeed, busting the door down with one leg and rushing towards Bloody Mary who was in the process of jumping out an open window.
- “Bloody Mary, as the Lord’s servant, I will mete out justice right here!”
- Bloody Mary didn’t even cast a glance back at the food soul who was hot on his heels. He gritted his teeth and continued running in the rain.
- He hadn’t gotten his hands on Steak yet, hadn’t savoured that endless warmth, hadn’t gotten his revenge on Red Wine for what he did to his Master Attendant —— there was no way he would let anyone pass judgement on him.
