You turn side on, turning a cartwheel into a somersault to jump over the crocodile's head as it darts above the water, jaws gnashing in the air. The blue echoes close around the skirts of your dress, but the green-scaled jaw doesn't, snapping shut an instant too late. There’s a loud bang, and one of the crocodile’s eyes becomes a bloody pit, and then you land on its back and balance there, sword out and steadying you as it tosses and writhes.
