Perhaps an exiled, also-wandering woman slowly succumbing to her own curse - the one that'll eventually turn her into a beast - or an already-demonic/monstrous entity roaming the mortal world for sustenance.

Not to mention it gives them [i]something[/i] to strive for; I imagine with Medusa's humanity tangibly slipping through her fingers she'd welcome the chance for a relationship with someone that understands.
