- Final Fantasy: Legend of Balance(THE BEST gateway RPGMaker Title)
- You know, I've always said that instead of replaying FF4/5/6 for the zillionth time like so many of me and my fellow hardcore SNES fans seem to do, they should go on rpgmaker.net and give some Final Fantasy fangames a chance, but I realized today that I'm not following my own advice, as when I think about it, I've never replayed this. Hell, I've never replayed any of the RPGMaker titles that aren't easily beatable in a few hours. So today I decided I'm gonna replay one.
- When I think about it, this is probably my favorite Final Fantasy title.
- You can find it here btw. If you're a fan of the SNES Final Fantasies and/or a fan of the Final Fantasy MMOs, I think you'd enjoy it.

- Yes, I like this game more than Final Fantasy Tactics. There are three main reasons, and the reasons are quite simple.
- The first reason. I think it nails it for me as a comedy. I don't usually like game comedies, especially parody games, and this love letter to the series is most definitely part parody. Parodies are usually the "hahaha, reference." No set up, no payoff, just "hahaha, reference." This game thankfully doesn't expect you to have played the Final Fantasy games, so while there definitely are jokes that are references to the Final Fantasy series, there's more than enough clever jokes in this game that stand on their own. Oh, and the reference jokes, again, set up and pay off, and it's often very very clever!
- The second reason is that it's a lighthearted game. And let me tell ya, as far as heavily dialogue and story driven games, it is RAAAAAAAARE to find a lighthearted game I enjoy. They almost always feel so sappy and artificial, and I end up feeling miserable. You know, the exact opposite way I'm supposed to feel when experiencing something lighthearted. Again though, this game nails it!
- The third reason is quite personal. You see, years ago I was streaming on twitch, part of an rpgmaker collaboration channel. It wasn't very long sadly, as the person that ran it fell off the face of the earth, and that killed most of everyone's interest, but anyways, this was the one game that I went through. and the day before I knew that I was going to beat this game on stream, I told the developers this, and asked them to join me. Sure enough, the two main developers behind this game showed up, and I got to talk to them as I went through this game. I got to ask them all sorts of questions. I remember two main things from that stream. One of them being surprised that I didn't unlock any of the secret characters. The other being when the credits rolled, and I got to rant and rave about how great the game was, and thank them literally right after I had beaten it for making it, and asked them to keep making games.
- Both of them went on to be be contributors behind a Final Fantasy 4: Alter Destiny, What-if fan game as well, although I don't know the details.
- Again, it's the best Final Fantasy title I've ever played, and I say that as someone who's played almost every official Final Fantasy title out there. Give it a shot. It's not a hard game to understand, and the installation is simple. Just extract, and play. Oh, and I can confirm that it plays just fine with a controller.
