Statement of Purpose Draft

My formal advanced education in chemistry started with my undergraduate program in Chemistry Education at Hacettepe University. As is often said, the journey of exploring the realm of knowledge and probing into the unknown is infinite and strenuous. However, to me, the desire to fulfill ambitions and the joy from discoveries prevailed over any sense of hardship. My undergraduate program was as rewarding as it was joyful. I believed that the most important task as an undergraduate student was to lay a firm groundwork in terms of the basic knowledge and experimental techniques so that more advanced studies could be pursued. Based on this awareness, I decided that a good know how in all the core courses, including experimental courses, was necessary. I tried to understand the principle underlying each chemical phenomenon and how each principle was derived. To do so, I had to understand the textbooks thoroughly and supplement my classroom education with information from the Internet, the library, the lectures and other sources. This way of learning allowed me to become deeply familiar with various branches of chemistry. My dedicated academic efforts paid off, as I was awarded a full scholarship for my entire undergraduate education. I also managed to graduate as an honour student.

I am deeply interested in chemistry as a lifelong career and I am determined to develop myself into a well-trained professional. I am also clearly aware of the immense efforts that I have to make in order to fulfill this aspiration. This constitutes the very motivation behind my present application to the Ph.D. in Chemistry program at the School of Computer/Mathematical/Natural Sciences in your University. Modern chemistry is unthinkable without the achievements of theoretical, computational and physical chemistry. These disciplines became an essential tool for the molecular sciences towards the end of the 20th century, and they will undoubtedly mark the new era that lies ahead. From this perspective, new generations of chemists with broad knowledge, is of paramount importance.

In this day and age Computational Chemistry largely complements information obtained by chemical experiments, leading to new innovations in chemistry. Great strides have been made by chemical experts while applying Theoretical and Physical Chemistry. At the end of the studies I hope to be able to apply and develop methods and knowledge with regard to my professional activities as an expert. I hope to be able to master a wide range of theoretical and computational tools. It is my dream to be part of a team that would pioneer in the field of theoretical Chemistry and computational modelling in my country. I would also like to apply the knowledge attained in my endeavors with Quantum Computing in relations to Organic Chemistry. In addition to commanding sound theoretical knowledge in chemistry and computational modelling, I hope to be equipped to apply or develop any of the scientific codes mastered in the programme in a work environment. I hope to have attained the necessary skills to pursue a scientific career chemistry.

There are some important reasons for my choosing your esteemed university. The most important reason is that its specialization in Organic & Physical Chemistry and its research concentrations in Theoretical & Computational Chemistry would perfectly match my intended research prospects.Your strong faculty at the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry is also another important factor. Finally, your curriculum is scientifically designed, requiring students not only to focus on core subjects within their own discipline but also go beyond their discipline to attend courses in other departments in order to develop a broad understanding of knowledge. All these make me believe that I will receive the best education I can expect. Therefore I am convinced that I am a worthy candidate for your program.
