INTERLUDE 1: Chara

Sometimes Chara found it hard to concentrate on the present.
Their story had come to an End, long ago… nothing could change it, except power that they didn't have. Even though it was a bad Ending.
They remembered how they'd felt, the first time they woke, long after their heart had ceased to beat. Panicking, trapped in the darkness, buried, alone…
Frisk had long since given hope when Chara had made their deal. In fact, seeing the surface had affected Frisk greatly, in more ways than one.
 "Do you hear it?" They had asked. Heard what? Chara hadn't herd anything, and neither had anyone else - judging by their behaviours.
Chara sighed, and was instantly thrown into a memory. Falling leaves, snow everywhere… Chara had been tired, their head on Asriel's shoulder, the two children stumbling forward. Chara had been frozen on the outside, but their centre had burned warmly.
"Where are we going?" Chara asked the Monster. Fur covered his entire body, and he had a snout with small fangs they'd only noticed once Asriel had introduced himself. contrast, Chara was a small, pitiful Human wearing dark clothes and a thin jacket, both ruined by their fall into the Underground. Although it was difficult to discern, their shirt depicted a golden star on the front.
"My parents," Asriel said casually. He didn't mention how they were royalty. "Why did you fall down?"
"I-" Chara looked down at their shoes. "Can't remember," they lied.
Asriel didn't persue the topic. "Lucky. My life's been lousy."
At that moment, even if it never happened, Chara always remembered bells, ringing loudly. Maybe they did understand Frisk better than either of them thought.
"You only get one life," Chara said. "If you could Reset it, try for another outcome, it'll never be as good as your first go."
Chara woke to hear knocking at the door. The Fallen Human didn't need sleep, exactly, but it was nice. Frisk was asleep on the floor, wrapped up in a whirlwind of blankets and pillows. Perhaps… no. Listening, Chara heard the visitor knock again, louder, insistent.
They went to see who it was.
