  1. The diverse ethical doctrines of the Cyrenaics drew on a common epistemology where the only things we really know are subjective sensations. Since these are unique to the individual, the logical goal should be to seek as much momentary pleasure as is consistent with perfect self-mastery, rather than practice Stoic virtues of endurance, public reason and compassion. The Cyrenaics sought the individual pleasure of the moment as the only knowable good, though some with more delayed gratification than others; one, Theodorus, was banned from Athens for deploring the gods and preaching situational ethics; another, Hegesias, was accused of encouraging his audience to commit suicide, since he argued that suffering was endemic to body and soul and the only goal was to live without pain.
