290.
Yamazaki Sousuke: The Whale Shark

 291.
NAME: Sousuke Yamazaki
292. AGE: 18 [Varies on thread]
293. LOCATION: Japan
 294.

 295.
Sosuke is a former friend of Rin Matsuoka's from Sano Elementary School. There, they were best friends and used to hang out almost every day. Sosuke used to spend even holidays such as New Years at Rin's house together with Rin and Gou. After a certain relay they swam together, Sosuke told Rin he would rather swim individually, as he hated losing because of someone else's mistake and having to share victory with others. This made Rin angry, however, they quickly made up as Rin told Sosuke he would race him in 800m freestyle. He was a part of Sano Swimming Club with Rin. Sosuke crosses paths with Haruka and Makoto in middle school, during a race at Sano.

 296.
When Rin transferred schools and went to Iwatobi, Sosuke didn't say anything and just watched him go since he had always thought of him as a rival. He hands Haruka a letter written to him from Rin, who is currently in Australia. He later notes that the letter was clearly meant for Haruka, as there was evidence that Rin had rubbed out "you" and replaced it with "him".

 297.
After he finished elementary school, he went to Sano Elementary School and there continued swimming as hard as he could. Even after Rin's letters stopped coming, Sosuke continued working hard in order to one day stand on the same stage as Rin.

 298.
As he started attending high school, he intensified his training even further, and after a while, there was nobody who could beat him in swimming. However, soon enough he started sensing something was wrong with his shoulder. Despite that, he continued swimming and winning competitions up until his shoulder finally broke down completely the summer after 10th grade. As he heard from Gou that Rin came back from Australia, he worked hard to repair his shoulder before meeting him by going to physical therapies every day. Since his teammates had already surprassed him, Sosuke decided to quit swimming as he realized his dream would never come true. However, seeing Rin swim in the relay with Haruka, Makoto and Nagisa made Sosuke make a new dream of his - which is to swim with Rin again.

 299.
 300.
Personality

 301.
Strengths

 302.
 303.

 304. Analytic
305. Sousuke is very good at analyzing things that he’s interested in. As shown in canon, he can watch someone swimming and is able to tell what it is that they may be doing wrong. This is why he was able to help Nitori when he was over extending in his strokes and partly why it was stated that he would make a good coach.
306.
307. He doesn’t take this approach when it comes to everything but he does examine anything that he can manage. Although, if something doesn’t catch his attention, like various complicated video game fighting sequences, Sousuke’s not likely to care.
308.
309. Observant
310. Being observant is both a good and bad trait.
311.
312. Good: Sousuke can see a multitude of things ranging from Rin’s wonderful smile to how Momo is going through the courtyard to get various beetles. He can also pick out patterns which may or may not be obvious to others. This observation was part of why he was able to learn so much about the different swimming strokes.
313.
314. Bad: He can see how much of Rin is intertwined in Haru and he doesn’t enjoy it. As much as he can see of it, Sousuke understands he can’t quite be the pushing force for Rin anymore. As far as everything else, Sousuke also ends up having to see that there are several differences in people. This leads to his general outlook on humanity to be rather bleak and isn’t likely to be changed easily.
315.
316. Helpful
317. While he’s helpful, Sousuke still needs to be given a good reason to do it. In order to help someone, he needs to see potential in them and, if he doesn’t see it, Sousuke won’t waste his time. In this sense, his skeptical and fussy nature come into play but it’s not constant.
318.
319. He believes that if he offers his help, it has to serve a purpose. It needs to be a good reason. Sousuke doesn’t do things so make himself look good but he’ll do it if it helps the other with their own issues. Like with Nitori’s swimming, Sousuke would only help him after dark because he didn’t want to be credited for it when Nitori’s doing all the work.
320.
321. Reliable
 322. If there’s one good attribute to Sousuke, it’s his reliability. As shown in canon, he literally waits for Rin to write him back but Sousuke doesn’t reach out. He understood that Rin has to concentrate on his swimming rather than writing home to his friend. Sousuke never guilts Rin about this because he knows how important Rin’s dream is to him. However, he did keep up with the letters as they came.
323.
324. When Nitori needed his help and coaching, Sousuke kept up with it until he was no longer needed. He wanted to see Nitori succeed as Rin had. It’s a little out of his dislike of pure talent being praised over hard work, but Sousuke will never say it aloud.
325.
326. He’ll always be there for people who need him, Sousuke would never just skip out on them. He finds that kind of behavior as being reprehensible and he has no interest in being flaky when it comes right down to it.
327.
328. Precise
 329. Being precise isn’t very important to Sousuke in general but there are certain points in which it’s quite useful. In arguments or when trying to prove a point, Sousuke does what he can to make sure that he’s actually using facts or as close to facts as he can get.
330.
331. This makes him good at debating with people but, at the same time, Sousuke may not be able to see it as subjectively as he would like.
332.
333. Otherwise, he’s very good at making certain his aim is spot on. This goes for aiming games as well as when on a shooting range. It’s partially why he worked so hard while swimming, he wanted to keep a certain time to be on Rin’s level. Sousuke wanted to meet him at the Olympics someday.
334.
Weaknesses

 335.
 336. Skeptical
 337. Sometimes being skeptical is a good thing but Sousuke often takes it to an extreme. He’ll wonder if someone’s being completely honest or if they’re actually giving something their all. At first, he didn’t think Nitori really needed the help or encouragement, but Sousuke still dedicated his time to helping him.
338.
339. He can be like this sometimes but it doesn’t do him any favors to be skeptical. It’s also another reason why Sousuke doesn’t do charity, he doesn’t think that it will do any good. In some cases, he’s not wrong.
340.
341. Fussy
 342. This is normally a mother’s or father’s trait, but Sousuke does become generally fussy over anyone that he’s close to. As shown in canon, he was often on Rin to make sure that he was making the right choice. He does this several times with Rin and very few others so this fussiness is a little bit of favoritism.
343.
344. It can also lead to anyone that’s a potential significant other. He doesn’t mean to ‘parent’ them but, at times, Sousuke just has to make sure that they’re really okay for his own mental health. In a way, this leads to his inflexibility.
345.
346. Inflexible
 347. Stubborn, more like. Sousuke can be difficult to deal with when it comes to actually bending his will on anything. It takes a lot of different types of negotiation to get him to relent on something. At times, it would take someone extremely close to him to actually get things out of him.
348.
349. This goes for decisions as well as certain personal information. It’s part of why it was so hard for anyone to find out about his shoulder and why Kisumi was the main source for it. There were several subtle hints but most were ignored by Rin until Sousuke spoke up. He claims he hid this because he knew Rin would cry, he never explicitly says it’s over his own pride but that could very well be a factor as well.
350.
351. Cold
 352. His coldness is often misunderstood as being cruelty but Sousuke isn’t often cruel for no reason. If he’s cold with someone, that’s usually because he has his own reasons for disliking them. He won’t become confrontational until the person proves that they need him to say something.
353.
354. Of course, this is shown in his nearly violent first meeting with Haru. Sousuke was using his coldness to attempt to protect Rin because he felt that Haru was in the way. He never noticed that it was because Haru actually pushed Rin to compete harder than he did before.
355.
356. This is what leads to his interfering nature.
357.
358. Interfering
 359. When coupled with his other negative traits, this list being a handful of them, Sousuke can be quite a handful. When he sees there’s an issue, Sousuke will get into it whether he has the entire story or not. This is one of those times he overlooks being accurate for the sake of being right, or at least seen as right.
360.
361. He’ll get into an issue and practically throw his weight around, like when he confronted Haru to get him to swim for Rin, so that he could try to make the situation right. It’s not that he actually is, but Sousuke wants to seem that way and get everything solved. He doesn’t quite realize he can’t do that on his own.
362.
363.
Sousuke and Independence:

 364. Sousuke is a very independent young man. He is fully able to put his intelligence to use and get things done for himself. It is possible that his narrow mindedness causes his creativity to suffer and may lead to his regular life, as seen when he managed to wreck his shoulder. He dwells on the past and over complicates things, limiting his ability to move forward and he can confuse himself. As such, Sousuke is able to have independence but he will need someone there helping him achieve more and not to be so critical of himself.
365.
366.
Sousuke and Friendship:

 367. Sousuke is looked up to by friends usually because he’s a straight thinker and can solve most problems logically. He is truthful, loyal, and determined. Some might find him cold or emotionally detached because he lives in his mind, not in his emotions. It may be hard to pin down how he is feeling because he often lives in denial.
368.
369. A person who is able to read deep into another will notice when Sousuke isn’t feeling well but if they confront him about it, he would rather retreat than talk. When dealing with him, it’s better to keep an emotional distance from him until he opens up first, which isn’t often.
370.
371. Even though he has attempted to analyze and control Rin’s life, he does so with the idea that he will improve their life, not purely for the sake of controlling him. In order to deal with him, most will need to be patient and understand that Sousuke’s recommendations are only to make others lives better, similar to when he helped Nitori.
372.
373.
Sousuke’s Temperament:
