  1. And so they were off, side by side with Mono in the middle as they left thier cozy little home and into the streets of Hillsdale. There were many ponies out and about. Buying food from vendors, Visiting shops, some singing for odd reasons, some pegasi flying about. Mono sometimes couldn't make heads or tales of it, but he enjoyed the peace, it was a peaceful little community.
  2. Spirit turned towards Train, she was curious about a few things. She didn't personally know Bitterroot, and the name seemed to have irked her just a tad. Her husband however knew all about him, he was his old teacher back before he graduated. He always spoke highly of him, and so Spirit let him personally arrange it for Mono to be in his class.
  3. >Spirit: Dear, why did Mr.Bitterroot stop teaching senior year students again?
  4. >Train: He just didn't like how they were getting honeybunch, he moved on down in hopes of teachin' younger ponies not to grow up to be so uppity, and to give em a top class education.
  5. >Spirit: And you sure that doesn't mean he had a nervous breakdown?
  6. >Train: ahf course, he just a good teacher is all. That's why I know he's gonna be at that schoolhouse when we get there.
  7. >Spirit: mmmmm, well if he is. I guess this will give me a chance to see who is going to be teaching our son.
  8. Mono wasn't paying too much attention, he was just looking around. Thinking to himself. [It's wierd sometimes how good it is here, not once have I ever felt I was going to be randomly shanked...then again, how would they carry a knife and stab with it?]
  9. >Train: oh trust me hun, you'll like him. Plus, I got a surprise for ya when we get there.
  10. Spirit tensed up, another surprise? another thing he waited for an oppurtune moment to drop on her? What could it be this time? She looked at Train, with worried and unpleasent eyes.
  11. >Spirit:...what....surprise?....dear...
  12. Train winced, but he wasn't going to be dettered. He felt he had a good idea brewing.
  13. >Train: ahhh ahah...come on honey, just trust me. You'll really like what I got arranged.
  14. >Spirit: arranged? So you already know he is there?
  15. >Train: no no, I mean something about that is all. You know, it's more for Mono than for us.
  16. [And the sky is always so damn nice, I wonder how parralel Equestria's physics are to earth]
  17. Spirit sighed.
  18. >Spirit: Honey, you've been springing alot of surprises lately. You do remember I am your wife? I'd appreciate it if you'd fill me in on things instead of surprising me. Especially if it regards our son.
  19. [And everyone seems to be alittle sing song sometimes, yet I don't see anyone taking any drugs. or even heard of such a thing. So I guess nobody is actually high]
  20. >Train: I'm sorry dear....I just want you to be happy and all. I do appreciate you letting me handle all this and I promise it'll be worth it.
  21. >Spirit:...mmm...I beleive you.
  22. Spirit looked back and saw Mono just looking about, being curious. she giggled abit. Wondering what he was thinking.
  23. >Spirit: What are you looking at sweetie?
  24. Mono slowly turned towards her "Everything, sometimes things seem alittle out of the norm"
  25. >Spirit:Out of the norm? how so?
  26. "Well, I noticed sometimes clouds can be moved by pegasi. What's that all about? Why can't we do that?"
  27. >Spirit: Well dear, we can't fly for one. We are Earth Ponies. And pegasi have a special skill where they can manipulate the weather and such, it helps keeps nature in a balance. And then there are the wrap ups. Where everypony does there parts to move along the seasons.
  28. [that seems alittle....unfair]
  29. "Ok, but what else can we do as Earth ponies...you know, that pegasi...or unicorns can't"
  30. Train looked back and smiled
  31. >Train:Can I take this one dear?
  32. Spirit smiled
  33. >Spirit: Well you do come from a line of "Frontier ponies", so I don't see why not.
  34. >Train:Ahrm hrm, well son. We may not beable to do magic or fly. But we as earth ponies have our own special traits.
  35. "uh...huh, like what?"
  36. >Train: Well, were pretty good with the land. and we can get plenty strong too.
  37. "That sounds like what would be good for being a farmer dad, and were not farmers"
  38. Train chuckled
  39. >Train: maybe not son, but it can be good for other things. No pegasus or unicorn is as good at fixin trains like yer old dad, heheh. That's why i'm the head repair pony at the station.
  40. >Spirit: Dear....you are the only repair pony at the station.
  41. >Train: yup! And no amount of fancy magic is going to amount to the quality of good old fashioned train know-how and the strength to make sure every part stays put.
  42. >Spirit: hehe, dear. I don't think anypony could ever amount to your style and quality of work. You're a wonderful worker, and a wonderful husband.
  43. Train smiled and blushed abit,
  44. >Train: awww shucks dear, hehe...ahh...ahrm..so champ, did that answer your question?
  45. Mono nodded "Yeah dad, it actually does" [ I guess that sounds legit, it's not like there are unicorns out there besting evil monarchies or pegasi moving at insane speeds or anything. Everything seems pretty balanced]
  46. moments later, they had reached the schoolhouse, it sat in place with a small fence that stretched out far enough to have a quaint looking playground. the schoolhouse itself looked oldtimey with a cliche color of red. Train took the lead and went inside, Spirit and Mono following as he lead them into a hallway with doors to classrooms. Mono noted the interior was rather small. Looked to be about only twelve or fourteen classrooms. Train led them into the furthest to the right. Where an old darkish blue pony was readying up some papers, he had an odd red mane that poofed abit as it went towards the top of his head. His tail was absurdly small, and he wore thick black glasses.
  47. >Train: Mr.Bitterroot, hey! I knew you'd be here!
  48. Bitterroot gave out a small sigh and looked over, he had one blue eye and one grey eye. he was blind in his right eye it seemed.
  49. >Bitterroot: Mr.Tracks, I've been telling you for years i'm always here on a sunday preparing for the week to come. Why do you always seem to forget that in the first place?
  50. Train backed up abit, rubbing the back of his head.
  51. >Train: awww, come on. Ya know I don't usually ever come on sundays.
  52. >Bitterroot: no you never did, not even when you had a scheduled detention
  53. Bitterroot smiled abit, and peered over to Spirit and then Mono.
  54. >Bitterroot: hmm, ahh. This must be your lovely wife, and your son.
  55. Spirit nodded and gave a small bow in respect
  56. >Spirit: I would be, my husband has told me much about you Mr.Bitterroot. I'm glad we could officially meet and I'm happy a teacher like you will be accepting our son into your class.
  57. >Bitterroot: it's no trouble Mrs.Tracks, when your husband told me how bright your son was. I couldn't help but feel that he deserved to be in my second grade class.
  58. >Spirit: Well that's very....
  59. Spirit's eyes widened as she coughed, sounded like she was going to cough up a lung.
  60. >Train: Surprise sweetie! I figured with Mr.Bitterroot at the helm of our boy's education, then he'd be all the better pony for it.
  61. Spirit's left eye squinted as she stared at train, forcing a smile as her body quivered
  62. >Spirit:.....that's...good...dear....do...you mind...if..I...speak...to....you.....outside?
  63. Train smiled, feeling he must have done better than he thought. Getting his son to be in the 2nd grade right at the start? he figured it'd be good for him and he'd make alot of friends.
  64. >Train: sure dear. Mr.Bitterroot can you excuse us for a moment?
  65. Bitterroot could see it in both thier faces, that Train was unknowingly stepping into the landmine that right now was his wife.
  66. >Bitterroot:...ahrm...ummm..go right ahead. Would you mind if I had a word with your son however?
  67. >Train: ahh, sure. You wouldn't mind, would ya Mono?
  68. Mono looked up at him, then at Bitterroot. [...dad, second grade? you hid that from mom and me? I mean, I guess I don't mind. but eheheheh.....good luck dad] "I don't mind, I'd like to talk to my new teacher anyway"
  69. >Train: hehe, then it's all set then. Let's go dear.
  70. Spirit was doing her best to contain herself, she wanted to strap Train to a bed and do things to him, not sexy things. horrid...terrible things. As he stepped out with confidence, Spirit stepped out ready to essentially kill him.
  71. >Bitterroot: Your mother didn't seemed too pleased
  72. "...yeah, I think she didn't want me to start so high up."
  73. Bitterroot chuckled abit, and went back to his desk to sort his papers.
  74. >Bitterroot: I don't think it's too terrible an idea, if what your father told me was true.
  75. "hmm?" Mono looked at him curiously, and stepped closer. "What did he say?
  76. >Bitterroot: He told me you were very well learned for a colt your age, and spoke better than any five year old he ever knew.
  77. [Dad said that?...awwww...now I feel really bad mom is about to tear him to shreds...] "he said that huh? Well, I suppose I am alittle smart" [hehehehe, ooohhh boy. here we go. Chance number one to step things up] "Yeah, hehe. You could say I'm really good at a few things."
  78. Suddenly, Spirit could be heard through the halls. yelling things such as "I thought he was going to start in a place with colts and fillies his own age" and "What if he gets mocked for being so young?! did you think about that?!". Bitterroot ignored it while Mono cringed.
  79. >Bitterroot: Ignore them, I'd like to test you abit Mono. There'd be no point in accepting you in this grade if you couldn't keep up.
  80. Mono grinned, this was his chance to surprise somepony that wasn't his parents. "oh, a test? what of?"
  81. >Bitterroot: I beleive a vocal math test is in order, ponies your age seem to forget key historic details and training you for a spelling bee could wait. I just want to test you on something that requires cold hard thinking. You don't mind do you?
  82. Mono chuckled, he felt energy building up in his body, he was excited. This was it, the entrance to the start of his plans. [ohhh...Dad, if Mom doesn't do anything rash, I thank you from the bottom of my heart, hehe] "I don't mind"
  83. >Bitterroot: Let's begin then....seven subtracted by two
  84. "Five"
  85. >Bitterroot: eleven plus twelve
  86. "twenty three"
  87. And this went on for a good three minutes, Mono never hesitating on an answer, and all of them being correct.
  88. Bitterroot put his papers together and adjusted his glasses with a touch of his hoof. And sighed, looking away from Mono.
  89. >Bitterroot: hehe...Never have I seen one so young be as bright as you, in math atleast anyway. If your parents would allow it. It'd be my pleasure to allow you into my class.
  90. Mono grinned and went and sat at a desk, his head was full of accomplishments and dreams. "I blew you away ,huh? yup I knew I would"
  91. Bitterroot cringed abit, and focused his eyes on the paper, he didn't like arrogance. And even if Mono was bright. He wasn't about to allow him to get such a big head.
  92. >Bitterroot: You....surprised me. But Mr.Mono, I'd not let this go to your head. Everypony, even me makes mistakes. It'd be a shame for you to put yourself so high up only to fall down so hard.
  93. Mono suddenly felt annoyed, but before he could retort. His mother opens the door and enters the room and faces Bitterroot,
  94. >Spirit: Mr.Bitterroot, I'd like to apologize for my husband. But I don't think our son is ready for the second grade.
  95. [ahh dammit...ok.....don't freeze up because she's your mom. You just made a stephold somewhere, and you need to be in this class...wait....isn't this the class that..T..no mom NO!] "Wait! umm...mom!"
  96. Mono zipped down from the desk and towards his mother. "Let's...let's not ummm...well...umm you know. What if I like it here?"
  97. >Spirit: Mono, these ponies aren't your own age. they are older than you. What if...
  98. "Mom..I know what your gonna say, and come on. Didn't you say I could make alot of friends if I wanted to?"
  99. >Spirit: Mono, I meant in a class that's not too advanced for you.
  100. "But....but....mommmm..."
  101. Bitterroot slowly turned towards the both of them, adjusting his glasses again.
  102. >Bitterroot: if I may interject.
  103. >Spirit: Mr.Bitterroot...I'm sorry we just wasted your time.
  104. >Bitterroot: hmm hmm, not at all. I wouldn't even call it a waste. I took the liberty of testing your son and he seems more intelligent than what even your husband described. In terms of math, he is already up to speed with the rest of my class.
  105. Spirit shook her head, did she hear right? already up to speed?
  106. >Spirit: what..do you mean?
  107. >Bitterroot: I mean your son would fit right in. I could keep alittle bit of an eye on him if you're worried about the other students. I do it all the time, plus there is a surprise guest coming on tuesday that I'm sure someone of your son's calibur would love to meet,
  108. >Spirit:...I..know about that. But Mr.Bitterroot please understand. I didn't know my husband had signed him up for here. And I feel my son may not be ready.
  109. "Mommm! come on, I'm totally ready. Like Mr.Bitterroot said. I aced his test, it was really easy. Please please!" Mono started to hop around [Come on mom, please. Atleast until after I get to meet Twilight? I need to see how a student of the princess is!!] "Come on, I know I can even make friends here!"
  110. >Spirit:..Mono...sweetie..I don't know.
  111. >Bitterroot: Mrs.Tracks, I can assure you and gurantee your son will be in good hands, and my students are quite friendly. And I have one or two students that are closer to his age. a one to three year difference I think won't be too terrible, especially since he seems he can manage himself.
  112. Spirit sighed and turned around and opened the door.
  113. >Spirit:....honey, get in here, please...
  114. Train stepped inside the room, his mane was frazzled, in his mind, he wish he was wearing his lucky bowler's hat if he knew his surprise was going to backfire. or atleast seemed to be, as he was overhearing through the door.
  115. >Train:...yes..dear?
  116. >Spirit: I'm going to ask you seriously, because Mono seems to want to be in this class. And it seems...he really is quite remarkable.
  117. Mono frowned [really is?...mom...I thought.] "Mom....what do you mean 'really is quite remarkable?...wasn't I always remarkable?'"
  118. Spirit felt her heart drop, she didn't mean to put it that way. She turned to Mono quickly.
  119. >Spirit: no no, I didn't mean it like that sweetie. I meant...I meant I was worried that this might be too much for you.
  120. Train stepped up over Spirit and nuzzled into her, for a stallion that just got yelled at, he seemed pretty ok after all of it. Perhaps this is what Spirit meant by his sweet and optimistic nature.
  121. >Train: But it might not be sweetie, come on now. Let's atleast just give it a chance. And if it does turn out to be too much. We'll just ask for a transfer, that'd be ok with ya..Right Mr.Bitterroot?
  122. >Bitterroot: I don't see why not.
  123. Mono should have been thrilled, but he sat there. His heart was hurting, as he looked down. Frowning, full of sorrow. [Mom...why'd you go and say that? I thought you beleived in me all the way.] "Mom...don't you beleive in me?"
  124. Spirit frowned, she felt like the bad guy all of a sudden. Of course she beleives in her son, but she still was worried. And now she was regretting just putting it in those words.
  125. >Spirit: of..of course I do Mono, come here, please?
  126. Mono hesitated at first, as a tear fled his eye and down his cheek. He understood why he was hurt, and tried to pass it off knowing it was his mother's poor choice of words. But he couldn't shake it. It was like someone punctured his soul. He slowly walked over to Spirit, who nuzzled into him gently and looked into his eyes.
  127. >Spirit: I really do...Mono, do you really want to do this? If...if you do, then i'll be behind you all the way.
  128. "I do mom, and I'll make both you and dad proud." [I promise]
