  1. The conditions needed to attain self actualization are as follows:
  2.
  3. Free of constraints that are imposed by society or by ourselves.
  4. To be free of distracted by the lower order needs.
  5. To be secure in our self image, relationships and to be able to give and receive love.
  6. Have a realistic knowledge of our strengths, weaknesses, virtues and vices.
  7. The Peak Experiences are described as sudden intense moments of happiness and wellbeing. It is during this experience that the self is transcended and the person will lose all feelings of doubt, fear, anxiety, and inhibitions...and are replaced with feelings of confidence and power. Maslow stated that everyone is capable of peak experiences, but many depress them. However, peak. experiences are necessary for self actualization and only those who are fulfilled and self actuality’s will have a peak experience.

  9. Rogers defined the fully functioning person as the desired end result of psychological development. He described several characteristics of the fully functioning or self-actualized person.

  13. Characteristics-
  14.
  15. Aware of all experiences- all experiences are welcomed. Both negative and positive emotions are accepted and rightfully placed.
  16. Live Fully- Carpe Diem...they take every opportunity to live fully and soak up every moment. They appreciate the present, let past stay in the past, and wait for the future.
  17. Trust in Their Own Organism- Trusting in instants, feelings and gut reactions are trusted in this phase. Rogers stated that this person is no longer guided by a social code or the opinions of others.
  18. Creativity and Choices without Inhibitions- a person must be free to make choices and express his or her creativity without any constraints or inhibitions. He or she should be free to seek new experiences, adapt and change...and not be subjected to predictability.
  19. Actualizing- this person is growing, striving, and using ones potential...but always looking for new challenges and experiences.
  20. The fully functioning person is in a state of self actualization. If Rogers theory is correct is correct, we never reach the phase of actualized. Rogers used the term actualizing instead of actualized because actualized is final. Rogers believes that self development is a continuous process and is always in progress. He states that “fully functioning is a direction...not a destination” (Rogers, 1961).
