  1. [7:01:24 PM CDT] <[Cy]> =====---Intermission IV---=====
  2. [7:06:46 PM CDT] <[Cy]> [A State-week passes with little commotion. The notices and postings on the roadside billboard outside the Main Office change every few days as offerings are filled, though all of them are low priority errands that are favoured by the more domestic Associates.]
  3. [7:09:40 PM CDT] * [grant]_Ryla checks the roadside billboard to see if there are any interesting jobs. She browses over the various offers.
  4. [7:12:28 PM CDT] <[110]_Hanne> !roll 1d20 + 1d8 Dex & Int Crafting
  5. [7:12:30 PM CDT] <FeistyKaka> [110]_Hanne rolled: {18}=> 18 + {1}=> 1 = 19 "Dex & Int Crafting"
  6. [7:13:17 PM CDT] <[Cy]> [Ryla tries to decypher the posters using what she's learnt of the State script so far. She can tell that a lot of them involve getting something from somewhere.]
  7. [7:16:06 PM CDT] <[grant]_Ryla> Hmmm, getting there. I still need some help in reading these. Maybe, I should get one of the others.
  8. [7:16:26 PM CDT] * [110]_Hanne walks up behind Ryla and leans over her shoulder.
  9. [7:16:35 PM CDT] <[110]_Hanne> For what purpose?
  10. [7:17:59 PM CDT] * [grant]_Ryla tilts her head and glances sideways at Hanne.
  11. [7:18:13 PM CDT] <[grant]_Ryla> I would have thought you would be the most bored here.
  12. [7:19:35 PM CDT] * [110]_Hanne straitens back out and smiles at Ryla.
  13. [7:20:03 PM CDT] <[110]_Hanne> I find things to occupy my time. What're you looking at?
  14. [7:20:09 PM CDT] * [110]_Hanne glances at the billboard.
  15. [7:21:42 PM CDT] <[110]_Hanne> !roll 1d8 + 1d8 Int & Wll Glancing
  16. [7:21:43 PM CDT] <FeistyKaka> [110]_Hanne rolled: {6}=> 6 + {3}=> 3 = 9 "Int & Wll Glancing"
  17. [7:22:21 PM CDT] <[grant]_Ryla> Looks like a board for job postings. The few that I can read say something like picking something up. I think.
  18. [7:22:24 PM CDT] <[Cy]> [Hanne sees nothing of note.]
  19. [7:26:00 PM CDT] * [110]_Hanne walks up to the billboard for a closer look.
  20. [7:26:13 PM CDT] <[110]_Hanne> Huh. Which one were you looking at?
  21. [7:27:51 PM CDT] <[grant]_Ryla> Nothing in particular. I'm sure if it were a well paying job it would stick out more.
  22. [7:32:59 PM CDT] <[Cy]> [Ryla's intuition proves to be wrong as Hanne spots a posting, like every other, except it's listed as a long duration job with few additional details beyond that the information will be provided as needed.]
  23. [7:38:46 PM CDT] * [110]_Hanne examines the posting more closely.
  24. [7:42:57 PM CDT] <[Cy]> [It says that it's a long duration assignment of indefinite length, some experience necessary, and that credit must be balanced prior to deployment. Interested parties are to inquire about listing 3908.]
  25. [7:44:43 PM CDT] <[grant]_Ryla> See anything interesting?
  26. [7:49:47 PM CDT] <[110]_Hanne> This one says it's a "long duration assignment". Apparently you need to exchange all your favours before embarking. Not much else is said though.
  27. [7:50:28 PM CDT] * [Multi]_Meadow , on her way to the central office, spies Ryla and Hanne discussing the posting. She walk over to see what has interested them.
  28. [7:50:57 PM CDT] <[grant]_Ryla> It must really be long if you have to exchange all of your favors before going.
  29. [7:51:25 PM CDT] <[110]_Hanne> Or dangerous.
  30. [7:51:52 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> There's a job that requires you to exchange your favors?
  31. [7:53:27 PM CDT] <[grant]_Ryla> Seems like it. You probably won't find out much without asking the people in charge directly.
  32. [7:53:56 PM CDT] * [Multi]_Meadow looks at the posting.
  33. [7:54:17 PM CDT] <[grant]_Ryla> Since you both are here I can say good morning. Even if it is a little late.
  34. [7:54:24 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> I'm not sure that that's what they mean by "settling your credit," but I agree, we'd have to inquire. Shall we?
  35. [7:55:55 PM CDT] <[grant]_Ryla> Are you planning to take a job like that?
  36. [7:57:03 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> I'd want to hear the details, first. I have a fair number of favors back, and if I have to expend them before the mission begins, I'd have to consider carefully what to do with them before embarking upon it.
  37. [7:58:11 PM CDT] <[grant]_Ryla> It does sound like something big so I can't say it hasn't gotten me interested.
  38. [7:58:34 PM CDT] * [110]_Hanne shrugs.
  39. [7:58:51 PM CDT] <[110]_Hanne> Didn't think you'd be up for something like that.
  40. [7:59:25 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> It says that experience is required. That's something else you'd have to ask about.
  41. [7:59:34 PM CDT] * [110]_Hanne walks past the other two into the Main Office.
  42. [8:01:11 PM CDT] * [Multi]_Meadow walks after her.'
  43. [8:01:27 PM CDT] * [grant]_Ryla follows the other two.
  44. [8:02:27 PM CDT] <[Cy]> [The lobby of the Main Office is as it is usually, quiet and orderly. Today there is only a small lineup of two individuals before the desks. Meadow recognizes two of the Ynnis on a bench off to the side, looking somewhat haggard.]
  45. [8:04:29 PM CDT] * [Multi]_Meadow breaks her pace as she recognizes the Ynni. She changes course to walk over to them.
  46. [8:04:43 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> [Ranik] Excuse me.
  47. [8:05:28 PM CDT] * [110]_Hanne ignores them and gets in queue for the desks.
  48. [8:06:07 PM CDT] <[Cy]> [The two of them lift their heads to look at Meadow, they squint in concentration before one manages to speak.]
  49. [8:06:13 PM CDT] <[Cy]> Y: It's you.
  50. [8:06:57 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> [Ranik] I suppose it is. And forgive me, I recognize your faces, but I don't believe we've ever spoken before. Could I ask for your names?
  51. [8:10:45 PM CDT] <[Cy]> Y: Ugh, mines... Thillam, and he's Bonson, yeah.
  52. [8:11:35 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> [Ranik] It's good to make your acquaintance. How have things been? It looks like there's still some trouble in your household.
  53. [8:13:33 PM CDT] <[Cy]> Y: Uh, n-no. We just went to... learn... learn the State language through one of them spiders. We're just trying to get our heads on straight, yeah.
  54. [8:13:49 PM CDT] <[Cy]> [Hanne arrives at a desk as the line moved up.]
  55. [8:15:11 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> [State] I see. Are things going well, then, now that your food is provided for?
  56. [8:15:12 PM CDT] * [grant]_Ryla continues past Meadow and sticks around with Hanne.
  57. [8:16:22 PM CDT] <[110]_Hanne> 'Morning. I'm here about one of the posted jobs.
  58. [8:18:01 PM CDT] <[Cy]> Thillam [Ranik]: Ugh, no, yes. Our Lady chose us to... learn so we can get supplies easier. So far we've had to rely on... Risal's guesses.
  59. [8:18:13 PM CDT] <[Cy]> Receptionist: Which one?
  60. [8:19:25 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> [Ranik] You were specially appointed for the task?
  61. [8:19:55 PM CDT] <[110]_Hanne> 3908.
  62. [8:20:01 PM CDT] <[Cy]> Thillam [Ranik]: Y-yes. That's what I said... I think.
  63. [8:23:30 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> [Ranik] Congratulations on being the first of your people to learn the language of the State.
  64. [8:25:23 PM CDT] <[Cy]> R: We require individuals experienced with long range deployments to be part of a comprehensive multi-role operation. Individuals must be prepared to be away from this local region for an indeterminate amount of time. Deployment schedule to be determined at a later date.
  65. [8:26:23 PM CDT] <[Cy]> Thillam [Ranik]: Uh, thanks, once we can sort through which tongue is which, that is.
  66. [8:27:11 PM CDT] <[Cy]> Bonson [Ranik]: Sindr is going to gloat at us for this.
  67. [8:28:11 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> [Ranik] Is Sindr someone who like to tease others in their moments of weakness?
  68. [8:30:33 PM CDT] <[Cy]> Bonson [Ranik]: Sindr has turned her nose at everything since we... left home. She tried to refuse the food too... but hunger... got to her in the end.
  69. [8:31:20 PM CDT] <[Cy]> Thillam [Ranik]: Made her quiet at least.
  70. [8:31:56 PM CDT] * [Multi]_Meadow sighs and looks to the floor.
  71. [8:32:07 PM CDT] * [110]_Hanne shifts her weight.
  72. [8:34:23 PM CDT] <[110]_Hanne> Can you be more specific? "Multi-role" isn't much to go on.
  73. [8:34:29 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> !roll 1d20 + 1d12 + 1 Cha & Int
  74. [8:34:32 PM CDT] <FeistyKaka> [Multi]_Meadow rolled: {10}=> 10 + {3}=> 3 + 1 = 14 "Cha & Int"
  75. [8:37:50 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> I know it must be difficult, to have your homeland taken from you and be spirited away to this strange place. But I do hope that she and everyone else is able to find a way to live well while you're in the City.
  76. [8:38:27 PM CDT] <[Cy]> Receptionist: Multi-role indicates that the scope of the operation encompasses different aptitudes and tasks, as opposed to sourcing a particular material.
  77. [8:42:27 PM CDT] <[110]_Hanne> Uh-huh. Is there anything else you can tell me about this mission?
  78. [8:43:37 PM CDT] <[Cy]> Thillam [Ranik]: Bah, Sindr just doesn't know how good she's had it. This place is calm and quiet, yeah, and we haven't seen a place to drink, but there aren't any... drunks, or theives, or filth. I-I'm really lucky, just some peasant who worked his way into the palace making furniture, right... place at the right time to get here.
  79. [8:43:50 PM CDT] <[Cy]> [The two Ynni nod understandingly.]
  80. [8:44:54 PM CDT] <[Cy]> Receptionist: Further information can be received at Deployments. You will also need to present your identification.
  81. [8:46:22 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> [Ranik] I'm glad that there were some, at least, for whom the move wasn't too terribly catastrohpic. Do you suppose that that's why you were chosen to learn the State language? Because you've taken the move relatively well?
  82. [8:48:05 PM CDT] <[110]_Hanne> Where can I find Deployments?
  83. [9:00:47 PM CDT] <[Cy]> R: Second floor. The directory sign will show you where to go.
  84. [9:01:39 PM CDT] <[110]_Hanne> Alright. Thanks.
  85. [9:02:44 PM CDT] <[Cy]> Bonson [Ranik]: Maybe, Sindr will have to go learn eventually. Our Lady has expressed that it's useful to learn.
  86. [9:03:00 PM CDT] * [110]_Hanne walks over to where Meadow is.
  87. [9:03:10 PM CDT] * [grant]_Ryla follows Hanne.
  88. [9:03:28 PM CDT] <[110]_Hanne> If we want to know more, we need to go upstairs.
  89. [9:03:37 PM CDT] * [110]_Hanne looks at the two Ynnis.
  90. [9:03:43 PM CDT] <[110]_Hanne> Who're they?
  91. [9:03:56 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> [State] Refugees from Ynnishire.
  92. [9:05:07 PM CDT] <[Cy]> [The two of them nod.]
  93. [9:05:48 PM CDT] <[110]_Hanne> Do they need something? Odd to see them not at their lodgings.
  94. [9:11:58 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> [State] Thillam and Bonson just underwent the procedure to learn State from an Iyatem.
  95. [9:13:05 PM CDT] <[110]_Hanne> I see.
  96. [9:13:18 PM CDT] * [110]_Hanne turns to the two Ynnis.
  97. [9:13:28 PM CDT] <[110]_Hanne> {State} How was it?
  98. [9:14:31 PM CDT] <[Cy]> Thillam [State]: B-bad.
  99. [9:15:42 PM CDT] * [110]_Hanne grins.
  100. [9:15:46 PM CDT] <[110]_Hanne> It'll pass.
  101. [9:16:22 PM CDT] <[Cy]> Bonson [State]: Slow.
  102. [9:16:27 PM CDT] <[Cy]> [Bonson gives his head a shake.]
  103. [9:16:50 PM CDT] * [110]_Hanne turns back to Meadow.
  104. [9:17:06 PM CDT] <[110]_Hanne> In any case, I'm heading up. You staying here to chat?
  105. [9:18:21 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> [State] I'll come with you.
  106. [9:19:02 PM CDT] <[110]_Hanne> Right.
  107. [9:19:14 PM CDT] <[Cy]> [The two Ynni give you a wave as you depart.]
  108. [9:19:20 PM CDT] * [110]_Hanne waves goodbye to the two Ynnis before heading towards the stairs.
  109. [9:19:51 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> [Ranik] My co-workers and I are going to inquire about work. Please, give my regards to your Lady and everyone in your house. I hope that when this period of adversity ends, you[pl] are the stronger and wiser for it.
  110. [9:19:58 PM CDT] * [Multi]_Meadow follows Hanne up the stairs.
  111. [9:20:10 PM CDT] * [grant]_Ryla heads towards the stairs.
  112. [9:20:16 PM CDT] <[grant]_Ryla> So what was all that about?
  113. [9:24:34 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> Two Ynni who had just learned State through an Iyatem.
  114. [9:25:47 PM CDT] <[grant]_Ryla> Hmmm, must be pretty convenient.
  115. [9:27:39 PM CDT] <[110]_Hanne> Surprised you didn't go for it.
  116. [9:28:44 PM CDT] <[grant]_Ryla> I did have the option but it didn't sit right with me. In the end I decided to do it the old way.
  117. [9:30:08 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> That's originally how I learned State, but I learned Khashi through the Iyatem. It's not a terribly pleasant experience, but it is expedient.
  118. [9:30:18 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> What about it didn't sit right, if I might ask?
  119. [9:33:27 PM CDT] <[grant]_Ryla> I just kind of remembered the Iyatem that brought me to River the other day, what was her name again? She seemed nice but kind of dangerous at the same time. I'd rather go with something more familiar. Besides, with the aid of my potions it shouldn't take too long.
  120. [9:34:52 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> That was Echo. She taught me how to use my magic, and supervised my learning of Khashi.
  121. [9:37:14 PM CDT] <[grant]_Ryla> Ah that's right Echo. I'd probably like to spend some more time with their kind before I choose something like that.
  122. [9:39:06 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> There's nothign to be afraid of. Their figure can be imposing, but they are People.
  123. [9:39:45 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> And I should say, she does not resemble a monster of legend any more than you do, Ryla.
  124. [9:40:31 PM CDT] <[grant]_Ryla> I suppose so, it will just take some time to get used to.
  125. [9:41:22 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> And I don't suppose you've seen a Shentem before?
  126. [9:42:07 PM CDT] <[grant]_Ryla> What's a Shentem again?
  127. [9:43:21 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> The Shentem are a race of People with the form of great water serpents. I know of one that lives in the central pool in this office, but I don't believe I've encountered any others.
  128. [9:45:00 PM CDT] <[grant]_Ryla> Oh, that's what that was in the pool. Have you spoken to that one?
  129. [9:45:45 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> I've heard the Shentem of the pool speak, but I don't believe we've ever spoken with each other.
  130. [9:47:37 PM CDT] <[grant]_Ryla> The central pool is in a pretty odd location. I wonder what its purpose is.
  131. [9:48:04 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> Perhaps it's primary use is to house the Shentem.
  132. [9:48:51 PM CDT] <[grant]_Ryla> In the middle of the office area?
  133. [9:49:49 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> I've heard it relaying news; I suspect they serve the function of some type of courier, travelling through the oceans, but I can't be sure.
  134. [9:52:43 PM CDT] <[grant]_Ryla> Interesting, at some point maybe we can talk with one. For now let's see what this job is about.
  135. [9:53:12 PM CDT] <[Cy]> [Deployments is at the top of the stairs you ascend, passing a few staff along the way. The room is that cozy wood paneling found in some of the other departments here. Unlike other departments there is no desk, just a large room fit for groups and walls covered by neatly arranged charts and maps. A few Yintem are standing around a tall table in the corner.]]
  136. [10:00:04 PM CDT] * [Multi]_Meadow walks toward the Yintem.
  137. [10:00:28 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> I'm looking for more information on listing 3908.
  138. [10:01:00 PM CDT] <[Cy]> Y: Present your identification.
  139. [10:03:40 PM CDT] * [Multi]_Meadow presents her cube.
  140. [10:04:43 PM CDT] <[grant]_Ryla> Do I need to show mine as well? * She looks to Meadow as she takes out her cube. *
  141. [10:04:53 PM CDT] <[Cy]> [The Yintem holds it for a moment and hands it back to you. He glances at a paper on the table.]
  142. [10:05:07 PM CDT] <[Cy]> Y: Only if you are also interested in 3908.
  143. [10:06:20 PM CDT] <[grant]_Ryla> This is only for learning more about the job right?
  144. [10:07:08 PM CDT] <[Cy]> Y: Yes. The nature of it requires all inquests be logged.
  145. [10:08:04 PM CDT] * [grant]_Ryla takes out her cube and presents it to the Yintem.
  146. [10:10:47 PM CDT] <[Cy]> [He also holds Ryla's cube for a moment before returning it to her, while using his other hand to touch a drop of ink on a paper, from which lines sprawl across the page to form a page of condensed script.]
  147. [10:10:54 PM CDT] <[Cy]> Y: What would you like to know?
  148. [10:13:23 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> The listing mentioned that assignees would have to make balance their credit before embarking. What does "balancing credit" entail?
  149. [10:17:01 PM CDT] <[Cy]> Y: Any outstanding compensation for previous assignments need to be accounted for, either by requisitioning the equivalent value or by forfeiting the claim on the value. Admittedly, this is largely a book keeping measure, to minimize the opportunity for error over long durations.
  150. [10:19:31 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> Yes, the duration was mentioned. Is there any estimate on the duration of this mission?
  151. [10:20:44 PM CDT] <[Cy]> Y: No. The Administrator only informed us that it would take as long as necessary. We expect that this assignment is the next step in her personal project.
  152. [10:22:23 PM CDT] <[grant]_Ryla> What is the goal of this mission?
  153. [10:23:09 PM CDT] <[Cy]> Y: The Administrator did not say, and we are not inclined to guess.
  154. [10:25:08 PM CDT] * [110]_Hanne walks over to where Meadow and Ryla are conversing with the clerk. Upon reaching the desk, she retrieves her identity cube and hands it over.
  155. [10:25:26 PM CDT] <[110]_Hanne> Well? Find out anything useful?
  156. [10:25:49 PM CDT] <[Cy]> [The Yintem takes the cube momentarily and adjusts the script on the paper.]
  157. [10:26:43 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> Debatably.
  158. [10:27:10 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> The listing also mentioned that experience was required. What sort and level of experience is desired?
  159. [10:31:10 PM CDT] <[Cy]> Y: Associates would be expected to function independently in a civil environment, combat is expected and associates ought to be capable of basic tactics.
  160. [10:33:14 PM CDT] <[grant]_Ryla> Where will we be stationed at for the duration of the mission?
  161. [10:34:12 PM CDT] <[Cy]> Y: That information is not available.
  162. [10:34:18 PM CDT] <[Cy]> [He crosses his arms.]
  163. [10:34:54 PM CDT] <[Cy]> Y: In truth, we were given very few details from the Administrator via Shentem.
  164. [10:36:33 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> And how would one apply for this mission?
  165. [10:36:47 PM CDT] <[110]_Hanne> If combat is expected then it doesn't sound like we'll just be going for a stroll in the countryside.
  166. [10:39:42 PM CDT] <[Cy]> Y: Just state your interest and we will record it. We will inform you of developments as we learn them.
  167. [10:41:20 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> I would like to state my interest.
  168. [10:42:38 PM CDT] <[grant]_Ryla> Meadow, can't you just ask the Administrator for more details?
  169. [10:44:24 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> Unless she's completely unavailable, I'm certain that I could. But if she did not share that information with Deployments, then there is little cause to hope that she would see fit to share that information with me.
  170. [10:46:22 PM CDT] <[Cy]> Y: The Administrator is currently at the Capital, otherwise we would have a more complete plan.
  171. [10:48:06 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> If the only thing preventing our knowing more details is the Administrator's absence, then should we expect more details to be available when she returns?
  172. [10:49:54 PM CDT] <[Cy]> Y: Yes. It seemed she was in a hurry to start recruiting a group for this, she usually informs us in person and with far more detail.
  173. [10:51:30 PM CDT] <[110]_Hanne> Huh. Now I'm interested. I'd like to be updated as well.
  174. [10:52:01 PM CDT] <[grant]_Ryla> If it's just to get more details about it, I would like to know as well.
  175. [10:52:35 PM CDT] <[Cy]> Y: Noted. You should consider settling your accounts in case this assignment is confirmed as is.
  176. [10:53:44 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> Is there some sort of accounting department I could consult? I'm unsure of exactly how much credit I have to settle.
  177. [10:55:21 PM CDT] <[Cy]> Y: Accounting is at the end of this floor, with the purple doorframe.
  178. [10:56:04 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> Thank you.
  179. [11:04:46 PM CDT] * [Multi]_Meadow steps away from the Ynitem and out of Deployments, walking to the end of the floor in search of a purple doorframe.
  180. [11:06:17 PM CDT] * [grant]_Ryla follows Meadow to accounting.
  181. [11:06:44 PM CDT] * [110]_Hanne follows suit.
  182. [11:07:34 PM CDT] <[Cy]> [You spot the distinctive frame easily, at the opposite end of the pool from the lobby. Down below, you see two Shentem surfaced in the pool, with a small group on shore with them.]
  183. [11:11:26 PM CDT] <[Cy]> [Arriving at Accounts, you return to the familiar desk-wall setup. All the tables are staffed, and most of them are occupied.]
  184. [11:14:03 PM CDT] * [Multi]_Meadow enqueues herself in the shortest line available.
  185. [11:14:31 PM CDT] * [grant]_Ryla waits in line next to Meadow.
  186. [11:14:44 PM CDT] <[Cy]> [The shortest line happens to be the only line, which isn't a line at all, as there are available desks for you.]
  187. [11:16:02 PM CDT] * [Multi]_Meadow addresses the clerk at an open desk:
  188. [11:16:06 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> I would like to know how much credit I have accrued.
  189. [11:16:18 PM CDT] * [Multi]_Meadow places her ID cube on the desk.
  190. [11:16:54 PM CDT] * [grant]_Ryla goes to an open desk and readies her ID.
  191. [11:18:41 PM CDT] <[Cy]> [The clerks take your cubes and place them on a tablet before returning it to you, Ryla's clerk gets one of those fae orbs. They leave the desks and disappear into the long rows of shelves behind them, returning after a few minutes with some files.]
  192. [11:22:19 PM CDT] <[Cy]> MC: *Opens Meadow's folder* Is there some thing you have in mind?
  193. [11:25:22 PM CDT] * [110]_Hanne gets in queue.
  194. [11:25:44 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> It may be prudent for me to settle my credit in the near future, and I wold like to know what degree of expenditure that would take.
  195. [11:25:55 PM CDT] <[Cy]> RC: *Glances at Ryla's documents* You have one assignment's worth of value, is there something you would like to exchange for it?
  196. [11:27:53 PM CDT] <[Cy]> MC: You have a substantial list of accomplishments, such that things like immigration and permanent housing is available to you. You may use those as estimates of what you may request.
  197. [11:30:06 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> What exactly does "immigration" entail?
  198. [11:31:03 PM CDT] <[grant]_Ryla> I was wondering if I could get some additional information on this. * She pulls out a pendant with a pear shaped orange stone attached. * More specifically the pair that is connected to this.
  199. [11:32:44 PM CDT] <[Cy]> MC: Immigration is the procedure through which to earn citizenship and a place in the State.
  200. [11:32:56 PM CDT] <[Cy]> RC: Just information?
  201. [11:34:58 PM CDT] * [Multi]_Meadow stands still and silent.
  202. [11:35:37 PM CDT] <[grant]_Ryla> I suppose if I could get it from the State that would make things much simpler.
  203. [11:38:09 PM CDT] <[Cy]> RC: Do you require anything beyond an appraisal and subsequent information on this object?
  204. [11:39:44 PM CDT] <[grant]_Ryla> Is there some spare credit to make additional requests?
  205. [11:40:33 PM CDT] <[Cy]> RC: There may be, if your item proves to be a simple matter.
  206. [11:45:46 PM CDT] <[grant]_Ryla> If I could get throwing daggers that cannot be influenced by magic.
  207. [11:46:35 PM CDT] <[Cy]> RC: How many weapons would you need the effect on?
  208. [11:48:26 PM CDT] <[grant]_Ryla> Ideally 4.
  209. [11:49:25 PM CDT] <[Cy]> RC: That should be valid, provided that the examination of your item does not prove too laborious.
  210. [11:50:51 PM CDT] <[grant]_Ryla> I would like the priority to be on this pendant of course. The daggers I could survive without if needed.
  211. [11:54:49 PM CDT] <[Cy]> RC: Very well, we will provide you with a credit note and bill for this request.
  212. [11:55:00 PM CDT] * [Multi]_Meadow eventually licks her lips and opens her mouth before taking a slow breath. She asks:
  213. [11:55:01 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> If I requested lessons in poetry, how much credit would I have remaining?
  214. [11:56:56 PM CDT] <[Cy]> [Ryla's clerk fills out some paperwork for a few minutes, rolling some of them together into a roll and tying it with a string. She gives the roll to Ryla before filing the new papers into Ryla's folder.]
  215. [11:57:18 PM CDT] <[Cy]> MC: It would depend on how long the tutelage lasts.
  216. [11:57:50 PM CDT] <[grant]_Ryla> Thank you, where do I go to for the appraisal?
  217. [11:58:34 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> For how long could my credit provide lessons in poetry?
  218. [11:59:48 PM CDT] <[Cy]> [Meadow's clerk flips through a thick tome. Peering at something within.]
  219. [12:00:04 AM CDT] <[Cy]> MC: Years, at least.
  220. [12:00:34 AM CDT] <[Cy]> RC: Materials will handle your request, downstairs beside the Barracks.
  221. [12:02:01 AM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> After a year of instruction in poetry, about how much credit would I have remaining?
  222. [12:03:18 AM CDT] * [grant]_Ryla takes her roll down to Materials where she was directed.
  223. [12:04:02 AM CDT] <[Cy]> [A spot frees up for Hanne.]
  224. [12:05:01 AM CDT] * [110]_Hanne walks up to the free spot and takes a seat. She then reaches for her identity cube and hands it over.
  225. [12:05:51 AM CDT] <[Cy]> MC: A years' tutelage would expend approximately 20% of your credit.
  226. [12:06:44 AM CDT] <[Cy]> [Hanne's clerk does the usual tablet treatment with the cube and returns it when she stands to search the shelves for Hanne's file, returning after a short amount of time.]
  227. [12:07:21 AM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> And a year of musical instruction?
  228. [12:08:41 AM CDT] <[Cy]> MC: Equal in value to the poetry instruction. All expressive arts are of equal value.
  229. [12:09:29 AM CDT] * [Multi]_Meadow rubs her face with her right hand.
  230. [12:09:42 AM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> And magical instruction?
  231. [12:12:17 AM CDT] <[Cy]> MC: It would depend on the details of the magics, which we will have to defer to the magic institution from which you receive guidance.
  232. [12:13:15 AM CDT] <[110]_Hanne> I believe I have one assignment's worth of credit?
  233. [12:13:37 AM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> Is this the place to place an inquiry, or is there a different institution to which I should submit one?
  234. [12:15:27 AM CDT] <[Cy]> MC: We will provide you with a reference and the institution will send us an evaluation.
  235. [12:16:05 AM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> I would like a reference, please.
  236. [12:18:12 AM CDT] <[Cy]> MC: Very well, we will refer you for your maximum credit for the institution to evaluate.
  237. [12:18:23 AM CDT] <[Cy]> HC: You do, what would you like for it?
  238. [12:18:29 AM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> Thank you.
  239. [12:18:56 AM CDT] <[Cy]> [Meadow's clerk fills out some papers and rolls them up, tying the roll with a string and handing it to Meadow.]
  240. [12:19:03 AM CDT] <[110]_Hanne> I'd like to upgrade my armour to nullify magical effects.
  241. [12:19:30 AM CDT] * [Multi]_Meadow accepts the parcel.
  242. [12:20:26 AM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> Is it possible for me to learn how to read Condensed Script?
  243. [12:22:50 AM CDT] <[Cy]> MC: That would depend on your abilities, and we have not evaluated whether you are capable of comprehending Condensed.
  244. [12:23:35 AM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> Then I would like to be so evaluated.
  245. [12:23:40 AM CDT] <[Cy]> HC: That may be arranged. Are there particular details regarding how your equipment should be transmuted?
  246. [12:24:26 AM CDT] <[Cy]> MC: The magical institution can take care of that, as Condensed is within their purvue.
  247. [12:26:28 AM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> I see. That would fall under the purview of magical instruction.
  248. [12:27:15 AM CDT] <[110]_Hanne> Hmm... I'd like the armour to retain their effectiveness against non-magical attacks... and I'd prefer if the transmutation effects to be all encompassing. Yes, that should be good.
  249. [12:29:07 AM CDT] <[Cy]> HC: This can be done. We will refer you to Materials.
  250. [12:29:22 AM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> Thank you. Which institution should I deliver the referral to?
  251. [12:29:24 AM CDT] <[Cy]> [Hanne's clerk fills out the necessary forms and packages them in the usual way for her.]
  252. [12:30:45 AM CDT] <[Cy]> MC: Any institution most convenient for you, they are all suitably equipped. Research upstairs would be the closest.
  253. [12:31:25 AM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> Thank you. I believe that's all I wish to ask about today.
  254. [12:32:16 AM CDT] * [Multi]_Meadow moves away from the teller and walks upstairs to locate Research.
  255. [12:43:32 AM CDT] <[Cy]> [Meadow climbs the stairs to the next floor up, finding the blue-framed door to Research easily. The inside reminds you uncomfortably of the containment facility you were kept when you first found your magical affinity, though it is not as cold nor stationed with statuesque guards. Instead, the room you're in contains only an octagonal table with eight chairs around it, around which is seated three humans and two Yintem.]
  256. [12:45:07 AM CDT] * [Multi]_Meadow walks towards the table and announces to the room:
  257. [12:45:43 AM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> I've been referred by Accounting for an evaluation of how much magical instruction I could acquire for a certain amount of credit.
  258. [12:56:40 AM CDT] <[Cy]> [One of the group, a human woman, stands and steps forth to take your referral; the rest continue the conversation they were having.]
  259. [12:58:09 AM CDT] * [Multi]_Meadow hands the woman her referral documents.
  260. [12:59:57 AM CDT] <[Cy]> W: You have quite the sum, what instruction are you interested in?
  261. [1:00:41 AM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> My own discipline, divination. I would also learn how to read Condensed Script, if tht proves to be possible.
  262. [1:02:24 AM CDT] <[Cy]> W: How do you current manifest your divination?
  263. [1:03:00 AM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> Through visions.
  264. [1:04:31 AM CDT] <[Cy]> W: What lengths of your ability do you aspire to attain?
  265. [1:06:45 AM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> I'm not entirely sure by what a divination is benchmarked. Improved accuracy would have to be my primary goal; beyond that, the ability to See farther, I suppose.
  266. [1:09:03 AM CDT] <[Cy]> W: Interesting. We will notify a Iyatem of your request. Regarding Condensed, what purpose do you wish to understand it.
  267. [1:11:11 AM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> The People keep some documents that I'm interested to read only in Condensed Script.
  268. [1:12:49 AM CDT] <[Cy]> W: Aha... if such documents exist only in Condensed, it's not meant to be read by those who do not currently know it. What documents were you interested in?
  269. [1:14:03 AM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> The Mortal Ideal, primarily. I understand that there are other philosophical documents that are similarly only in Condensed Script.
  270. [1:20:17 AM CDT] <[Cy]> W: The Mortal Ideal is available in Plain Script, but it was not to be made available in the Associate Area until recently. Getting back to the point, however, even attempting to train a non-citizen in Condensed would require authorization beyond our station here. All we can do is provide you with a description of Condensed, and we can do that at no cost to you.
  271. [1:22:08 AM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> Would it be possible for me to apply for such authorization?
  272. [1:27:37 AM CDT] <[Cy]> W: Certainly, just inform the Administrator upon her return. No guarantees on approval, though.
  273. [1:28:14 AM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> Of course. I'd like the description, either way.
  274. [1:30:42 AM CDT] <[Cy]> W: Right this way.
  275. [1:32:56 AM CDT] <[Cy]> [The woman leads you through a door on one side of the room, guiding you through a few rooms with various apparati before arriving out on a balcony overlooking the city.]
  276. [1:34:44 AM CDT] <[Cy]> W: My name is Lily, by the way, one of the seniors of telekinetic magics if you were curious about my credentials.
  277. [1:36:02 AM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> Pleased to make your acquaintance.
  278. [1:39:09 AM CDT] <[Cy]> Lily: Now, back on topic, you may not be surprised at all to learn that Condensed Script is a direct gift from the Ancestors, with the place the information storage system has in society.
  279. [1:39:48 AM CDT] <[Cy]> [She takes a seat at a small round table for two beside the railing at the edge of the balcony.]
  280. [1:40:21 AM CDT] * [Multi]_Meadow takes the other seat.
  281. [1:40:37 AM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> Yes, I understand that it is written using the People's magic. The Yintem's magic, in particular.
  282. [1:43:44 AM CDT] <[Cy]> L: The physical, visual reproduction can be done manually by hand, though it is obviously tedious to draw out the intricate shape of it all. The Yintem's magic over materials merely compel ink, or some other substance, to change in such a way to produce the image, but the image itself has its own inherent magic.
  283. [1:44:55 AM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> I've heard that the Yintem do specialize in enchantment.
  284. [1:46:22 AM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> !roll 1d20 + 1d12 + 1 Cha & Int Conversationalist
  285. [1:46:23 AM CDT] <FeistyKaka> [Multi]_Meadow rolled: {9}=> 9 + {7}=> 7 + 1 = 17 "Cha & Int Conversationalist"
  286. [1:50:10 AM CDT] <[Cy]> L: The preferred term is transmutation, and it is no more a speciality than you are specialized to breathe air. Yintem were granted their magic by the Ancestors, allowing them to manipulate the properties of matter to whatever their abilities can shape. This magic is inherent to Yintem, they channel it through themselves. In comparison, Condensed is a magical object given to the Yintem by the Ancestors for responsible use. Condensed Script is
  287. [1:50:11 AM CDT] <[Cy]> magic in and of itself which, coupled with the fact that it is a treasure handed down from the Ancestors for safekeeping, is what makes the understanding of it so restricted.
  288. [1:52:09 AM CDT] <[Cy]> [A small stream of biscuits ascend from below, up over the balcony railing, followed by a small platter upon which they all rest on the table afterwards.]
  289. [1:54:02 AM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> It's hard for me to understand how a way of writing things could be am object unto itself. I would think that every instance of the writing would be a separate artifact.
  290. [1:56:04 AM CDT] <[Cy]> L: It is difficult to describe, yes. Let's put it a different way. Are you familiar with certain manifestations of magic which requires the user to focus their energies through a rote chant or words of power?
  291. [1:56:40 AM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> I've heard stories, but I'm not sure I've ever encountered such practices myself.
  292. [1:58:44 AM CDT] <[Cy]> L: In such mages, their words of magic are only powerful because the mage exists to imbue it with magic. By analogy, words in Condensed Script would be powerful even without a mage to utter and imbue them with power.
  293. [1:59:52 AM CDT] * [Multi]_Meadow furrows her brow in cogitation.
  294. [2:00:50 AM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> Do you mean to say that anyone who took the time to exactly copy a phrase of the condensed script would produce something imbued with its own inherent power?
  295. [2:02:17 AM CDT] <[Cy]> L: Yes.
  296. [2:04:39 AM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> Whereas in contrast, someone who were to pronounce a word of power without knowing the art of imbuing it with magical power would succeed in making only a sound.
  297. [2:07:33 AM CDT] <[Cy]> L: None can imbue magic. The State's research is heavily invested in determining whether or not this is true. All results thus far have indicated that nothing on this world can replicate the transpositive magic of the Ancestors. Incidentally, replicating transpositive magic is one of the State's goals.
  298. [2:07:42 AM CDT] <[Cy]> [Lily eats a biscuit.]
  299. [2:09:24 AM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> "Transpositive—" is that the word you use for phenomena like this that have an inherent power not imbued by a mage?
  300. [2:11:57 AM CDT] <[Cy]> L: Yes, excellent. Though not just mages, any outside entity. In a way, you can think of each page written with Condensed Script a mage by itself. The magic, of course, is to inform you of the contents of the page in its entirety, immersively and instantaneously.
  301. [2:13:30 AM CDT] * [Multi]_Meadow chuckles.
  302. [2:15:00 AM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> I have heard some peoples use an expression of the like, "no words are worth an image well wrought." It sounds like Condensed Script may be the only type of word that succeeds in being as communicative to the intellect as a picture is to the eyes.
  303. [2:16:33 AM CDT] <[Cy]> [Lily smiles.]
  304. [2:18:39 AM CDT] <[Cy]> L: It's recognized that the Mortal Ideal in Condensed may be a key reason why the State held together all these centuries through every tumultous time. The book always served to rally the People.
  305. [2:18:46 AM CDT] <[Cy]> [Lily has another biscuit.]
  306. [2:19:54 AM CDT] <[Cy]> L: For through Condensed, a reader experiences the closing days of the Ancestor's time, hunted by the uncivilized, until the People were driven into the sea.
  307. [2:20:53 AM CDT] * [Multi]_Meadow gasps.
  308. [2:20:56 AM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> This is it, then.
  309. [2:25:26 AM CDT] <[Cy]> L: Hmm?
  310. [2:25:31 AM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> This is the People's epic.
  311. [2:27:37 AM CDT] <[Cy]> L: It's an account of the Ancestor's demise, though.
  312. [2:28:31 AM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> It is a tale of battle, the battle that defined them, and through them, the People.
  313. [2:28:48 AM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> A battle lost, perhaps; a passage into martyrdom.
  314. [2:29:19 AM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> And to be able to see through their own eyes, a perfect historical record...!
  315. [2:35:27 AM CDT] <[Cy]> L: Interesting interpretation, though uncommon. The Mortal Ideal's purpose is to impress upon the People our place as the heirs of the Ancestors, to be stewards of this world.
  316. [2:35:42 AM CDT] <[Cy]> [Lily looks out to the sea as she munches on another biscuit.]
  317. [2:36:36 AM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> Exactly. It is the story that defines who the People are. What it means to be a Person.
  318. [2:40:14 AM CDT] <[Cy]> L: You won't find many entertaining the idea. The Mortal Ideal is not an object of common study, only certain stations are required to read it in its Condensed text, like Administrators, Censors, Magisters, and the like.
  319. [2:41:37 AM CDT] <[Cy]> L: Most People do not possess the understanding of Condensed, so their readings of the Ideal are through an epochal gloss.
  320. [2:43:18 AM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> Even so, I don't see how the Ideal could represent anything less. You said yourself that it has always been as a foundation upon which the State has stood, around which the People have rallied.
  321. [2:44:59 AM CDT] <[Cy]> L: True. It is still an unusual comparison, even if it functions like foundational legend in other societies.
  322. [2:46:44 AM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> And The Administrator had told me about it so long ago... All this time, and it's been the thing I've looked for!
  323. [2:47:38 AM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> I suppose I can only hope that I'll recieve approval to learn the Condensed Script—but you said that Plain Script versions have been made available?
  324. [2:51:17 AM CDT] <[Cy]> L: Yes, a new print with conteporary gloss now that the State possesses continental territory. It wasn't permitted in the Associate Area before lest the book be smuggled outside the City, now that the City security has been standardized in the Associate Area, that is no longer a concern.
  325. [2:52:21 AM CDT] <[Cy]> L: Incidentally, the Administrator may just expedite your experience by reading the Ideal to you. She's done that on occassion before.
  326. [2:53:00 AM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> Should she think it appropriate, it would be an honor.
  327. [2:53:10 AM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> I mean—
  328. [2:53:21 AM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> I'd be grateful if she decides to do so.
  329. [2:57:36 AM CDT] <[Cy]> L: You may reconsider after you experience it. The Ideal is a short phrase in the Ancestor tongue. The Administrator has used it to rebuke her censor multiple times.
  330. [3:01:21 AM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> Really? I don't suppose that should be surprising, given the nature of the story, and its central importance to the People's mission. Still, even if the experience itself be unpleasant, I should would desire to hear it at least once. But now, I say "hear;" if the communicative power of the Condensed Script resides in its written form, how should that be translated to someone else by speaking what it is written with it?
  331. [3:03:06 AM CDT] <[Cy]> L: It's simple, with the Ancestor tongue, which is to all of our languages as Condensed is to all of our writings: transpositive. Have you ever been taught something by an Iyatem?
  332. [3:05:04 AM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> I have.
  333. [3:07:56 AM CDT] <[Cy]> L: It's like that, but faster, and targeted. You can be standing and hear Ancestor words and make no sense of it, but if the speaker speaks it to you, then you receive all the meaning that is within, all at once. Imagine if an entire book was written on the space of your palm, would you be able to read it?
  334. [3:08:22 AM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> Not without a spyglass, I should think.
  335. [3:09:35 AM CDT] <[Cy]> L: Then you will likely miss much of the Ideal, in addition to the mental fatigue you would feel.
  336. [3:10:16 AM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> ...I'm afraid I don't follow.
  337. [3:11:31 AM CDT] <[Cy]> L: If someone recited you a lengthy littany, would you remember all of it, completely?
  338. [3:13:07 AM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> I suppose it's possible, under some circumstances. I've memorized littanies of some length, and I might be able to do so after hearing one for the first time—but what does this have to do with being the target of a short phrase in the Ancestor languge?
  339. [3:14:56 AM CDT] <[Cy]> L: A short phrase is enough to convey the contents of the Ideal, and the mental fatigue you felt from the eyes of Iyatem will scarcely compare.
  340. [3:21:22 AM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> In that case, I should truly be worse than rebuked.
  341. [3:22:14 AM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> But though I miss much of it, I would brave the discomfort and fatigue to know what of it I could.
  342. [3:22:26 AM CDT] <[Cy]> L: You must be careful what you wish for when it comes to the Administrator, choose wisely.
  343. [3:23:07 AM CDT] * [Multi]_Meadow laughs softly once again.
  344. [3:23:43 AM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> I get the feeling that this is something I would ask of anyone who could, be it the Adminitrator, you, or even Mist.
  345. [3:27:35 AM CDT] <[Cy]> L: Only those in line to the throne acquire the Ancestor tongue. We are in a unique position here in the Associate Administration to have our Administrator.
  346. [3:29:21 AM CDT] * [Multi]_Meadow is quiet for a moment as she digests this information.
  347. [3:29:44 AM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> ...I see. I'm grateful, then, that I have the opportunity to ask her for this.
  348. [3:32:22 AM CDT] <[Cy]> L: Try not to regret it afterwards, if you do.
  349. [3:35:17 AM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> I'm thankful that you've told me so much. I feel that I can make this decision with good understanding of its risks.
  350. [3:36:31 AM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> If there be regret, I will know that it was assumed knowingly, and with any luck, that will ease its burden.
  351. [3:39:17 AM CDT] <[Cy]> L: Also know that you will be recognized as one who carries some knowledge of the Ideal, and will be held responsible for it.
  352. [3:40:42 AM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> Should the Administrator see me worthy of such resonsibility, then I am confident that I can bear it.
  353. [3:45:28 AM CDT] <[Cy]> L: Good. Now, returning to the accumulated value you have, we are certain you can receive all of it, but will still have to await authorization due to the scope such a training would likely cover.
  354. [3:47:25 AM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> When you say "all of it," what period of instruction does that encompass?
  355. [3:48:22 AM CDT] <[Cy]> L: As much as you can endure. The instructor's time is finite.
  356. [3:49:41 AM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> And this in exchange for the entirety of my credit?
  357. [3:50:45 AM CDT] <[Cy]> L: That was the amount allocated, yes.
  358. [3:52:59 AM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> Were I to reserve 20% of the credit allocated to me, how would my instruction be abridged?
  359. [3:54:47 AM CDT] <[Cy]> L: That would be the decision of your instructor, but you should remind all who may deal with your credit of your intentions, it is written that all of it may be used.
  360. [3:57:01 AM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> I'll do my best to ensure that in the end, I have documents that reflect my intentions.
  361. [4:07:12 AM CDT] <[Cy]> L: Good. You may consult us if you have any questions later.
  362. [4:08:28 AM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> Thank you.
