- “2015-10-31 Saturday: 4 Opportunities”
- This is the same level and book as the “Core” class.
- ---
- Homework: units 11 and 12 tests (you do not need to write)
- ---
- Warm-up: Ask yes/no questions to try to figure out the explanation.
- Acting on an anonymous phone call, the police raid a house to arrest a suspected murderer. They don't know what he looks like but they know his name is John and that he is inside the house. The police bust in on a carpenter, a truck driver, a mechanic and a fireman all playing poker. Without hesitation or communication of any kind, they immediately arrest the fireman. How do they know they've got their man?
- ---
- Did you want to do any of those 4 jobs as a child? What did you want to do?
- ---
- p. 45 part 3 - What is a job you can think of that each word describes?
- “responsible” describes the person, the rest of the words can describe the job itself
- “You have to be responsible to be a pilot.” but “Being a pilot is a demanding job.”
- safe job = you probably won’t get hurt or killed on the job (opposite of dangerous)
- secure job = you probably won’t lose your job (opposite of insecure)
- ---
- p. 48 - what are these three women doing in the pictures?
- cheesemonger - a person who sells cheese
- cheese trafficker - person who smuggles and/or sells cheese illegally
- ---
- part 3 - listen to the women talking about their plans, and fix the incorrect information
- 1 at that job forever
- 2 next month
- 3 a new business
- 4 meeting the bank manager
- 5 going to study
- 6 next week
- lay off = when a company says you no longer work for them because they can’t afford your position (this is different from being fired)
- retire = when you stop working (and don’t look for another job in that career)
- ---
- p. 175 - look at Devi’s words at the top of the page
- 1 Find something that Devi has already decided.
- She is not going to stay in that job forever.
- 2 Find something that Devi has made arrangements (preparations) to do.
- She is taking the entrance exam next month.
- 3 Find something that Devi decides to do while she is speaking.
- She will tell her boss soon.
- ---
- It looks like there’s no time today. I’ll meet with him tomorrow. (deciding in the moment)
- I realized there wasn’t enough time today. I’m going to meet with him tomorrow. (decided before)
- I just got off the phone with him. I’m meeting with him tomorrow. (decided and arranged)
- ---
- Tonight I’m going to stay home and watch Netflix. (I have already decided this.)
- Tonight I’m staying home and watching Netflix. (My decision is the only arrangement I need.)
- ---
- actions - things that take time and energy to complete are actions
- I am reading a book. I am teaching a class. I am drinking water.
- non-actions - things that don’t require time, you don’t “do” non-actions
- I have 1000 books. I like teaching. I need water.
- (We don’t use non-actions in continuous tenses.)
- ---
- p. 49 part 8 - with your same partner, choose the correct options
- 1 I’m taking
- 2 I’m starting
- 3 I’m going to take
- 4 I’m going to manage (not an arrangement, more of a prediction)
- 5 they are going to do (“they are doing” sounds like it means the present)
- 6 I’m going to be (“be a great mechanic” isn’t an action, also this is more of a prediction)
- 7 I’ll have (uncertain, more of a prediction than a specific plan)
- part 9 - write the correct form of the verbs
- 1 I’m going to take / I’m taking
- 2 I’ll help (offers are usually decided in the moment of speaking)
- 3 is going to get married / is getting married
- 4 I’m going / I’m going to go
- 5 I’ll open
- ---
- plans = things about the future that I can decide (and arrange if necessary)
- predictions = things about the future that aren’t my decision
- ---
- p. 47 - predictions
- probably = more than 50%
- may/might/could = more than 0%
- (We typically say “may” with possibilities we think are less likely: “We may die tomorrow.” not “We may survive tomorrow.”)
- (Unless we expect to die.)
- may not / might not = less than 100%
- definitely/certainly = 100% (or as close as it’s possible to be)
- could not = 0% (it means I think something is impossible)
- It will probably rain tonight.
- It probably won’t rain tonight.
- It will probably not rain tonight.
- (same rules for certainly/definitely/absolutely/usually/often/frequently)
- ---
- In groups of 3, share your predictions for the next 10 years in your countries. What will or may change? What will probably stay the same? Compare how optimistic or pessimistic everyone is. (p. 47 part 13)
- ---

- Interview other students twice and take notes.
