- DISCLAIMER
- I am not a Wii U guru, professional Wii U modder or emulation specialist. I am just a regular guy who spent the time figuring things out to get this game to work. I now share the method I used to get Zelda:BOTW working so that you can get it working also.
- While the game does work CEMU is still very much in development and Zelda is not considered a playable title. There are many bugs, graphics and framerate issues that still need to be fixed. That being said you can still use this method to get things ready for when the title is playable via CEMU. This guide is for the EU version of BOTW but can easily be used for the US version too however, there will be some minor differences in folder and file names.
- Introduction
- I have tried many "tools" for many hours trying to get Zelda:BOTW to work via CEMU. I have read all the comments for BOTW torrents and watched many YouTube video tutorials about Wii U emulation and image extraction. The programs UWizard and JWUDTool do not work with the US or EU BOTW releases to extract the image into usable files however, DiscU (while old) does work and extracted the files for me. I finally got it to work on CEMU and this is how.
- Initial Steps
- 1. Once you have downloaded the torrent, extract the files from the .rar using the latest version of WinRAR. You should have a folder with the files v-tlzbwr.nfo, v-tlzbwr.key and v-tlzbwr.wud.
- 2. Rename the 'v-tlzbwr.key' file to 'game.key' and the 'v-tlzbwr.wud' file to 'game.wud'
- Getting CEMU to Work
- 3. Download the latest version of CEMU and extract all the files from the .rar file. Open Cemu but close it a few seconds after it does. Opening Cemu creates a 'keys.txt' and 'log.txt' file in the Cemu directory which we need.
- 4. Open the 'keys.txt' file and delete the entire line with the example key but take note of how the key is structured. Any text after the # is ignored and not considered a part of the key which allows you to label it.
- 5. Open the .nfo file from the torrent and copy the 32 character key from it (located between the ->> and <<;-) into the 'keys.txt' file but delete the spaces so it is one long 32 character string. You can then append a # to the end like the example key and label it (e.g. Zelda:BOTW EU key) so you know what game it is for.
- 6. Now you need to find the Wii U Common Key (using google) and also insert it into the 'keys.txt' file. I cannot post the key here but it should start with D7 and end with 56. Again with no spaces and label the key.
- 7. Now CEMU is ready to go and if you like you can test it by opening the .wud file from the torrent with it. If it works you should see a message warning you that it is unable to communicate with the Wii U GamePad. If you get an error message then you have not entered the Wii U Common Key and game key correctly. After this message there is another warning that your Wii U needs to be updated which prevents you from playing the game.
- Extracting the .wud File
- 8. Download DiscU 4.1b (google DiscU and it is the first result) and extract the DiscU.rar into the same directory where you just extracted the torrent files.
- 9. Open command prompt as an administrator (in Windows search for 'cmd.exe' or 'command prompt').
- 10. Navigate via the command prompt to the directory where you extracted the files e.g. if your files are located at D:\Wii U Games\The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild REPACK EU WiiU-VENOM then type:
- 'd:' [press enter]
- 'cd Wii U Games\The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild REPACK EU WiiU-VENOM' [press enter]
- 11. Once your command line is at the correct directory type 'DiscU.exe game.key game.wud' and the game should start to be extracted. The extraction process will take a while and at the end you should have a folder called 'WUP-P-ALZP' which is ~15GB in size so ensure you have enough free disk space before you start.
- 12. [OPTIONAL STEP] To test the extracted files open the 'U-King.rpx' file with CEMU. The 'U-King.rpx' file is located at '......\The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild REPACK EU WiiU-VENOM\WUP-P-ALZP\GM00050000101C9500\code' if you have used the defult extraction directories otherwise it will be different. If the game loads and displays the Wii U GamePad communication error message then it is working.
- Updating the Game
- 13. Now that the game is extracted we need to update it so that we can play it. Download the latest version of the program MapleSeed2 (which is available from GitHub or use Google) and it will download the files we need to update and play Zelda.
- 14. Open MapleSeed2 and you will receive a popup asking for a directory. The first thing this program is asking for is where your Wii U game(s) are located so direct it to the 'WUP-P-ALZP' folder. The next thing it is asking for is the location of 'Cemu.exe' so navigate to where you extracted it and select it. Wait a moment and you should see '[EUR] The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild' appear under the top menu.
- 15. Right click on '[EUR] The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild' and select '[+] Update -> v33' to which you will get a popup telling you the directory where it is going to download the patch content. The directory will be similar to 'cemu_1.9.0\mlc01\usr\title\00050000\101C9500'. Open a window showing this directory that way you can ensure the files are downloaded and because you need to copy the update once it is done. The patch content is ~4.5GB in size so ensure your internet connection is stable and that you have enough free disk space before you get the patch. Click 'Yes' on the MapleSeed2 popup and the update will be downloaded.
- 16. Once the update is downloaded you should have three folders called 'code', 'content' and 'meta' and a whole bunch of other files. Only the three folders mattter so select them all and then copy them. Paste these folders where the same ones are in your extracted game files directory (e.g. '\WUP-P-ALZP\GM00050000101C9500') overwriting all the files. Once all the files have been copied you are done and can now play Zelda.
- Playing the Game
- 17. Now you can move the extracted game files anywhere you want to store them and to play the game just open the 'U-King.rpx' file again with CEMU as per Step 12. The files can stay as they are and do not need to be packed into a .wud file again. Additionally I do not know how to repack the game files back into a .wud file nor is there any need to do so.
- NOTE: I will check this post periodically and do my best to answer any questions you may have but remember the disclaimer at the top. This is only a guide to help others get Zelda:BOTW working too and I am not a seasoned Wii U emulation professional. I also do not own a Wii U or do any homebrew stuff this is purely for fun and to test out CEMU.
