  1. Hi just want to explain why I gave the interview.
  2.
  3. If she blows off the wrong fan--given that her career is built on pandering to mentally ill teenagers--someone is going to hurt themselves. It's dangerous and irresponsible. If she doesn't want that responsibility, she should say it. Instead, she continues to promote that image every time she opens her mouth (including in the middle of her concerts).
  4.
  5. It would be (relatively) understandable if this story was about Beyonce, or Taylor, or Ariana, or anyone else who isn't known for their advocacy. They never asked for fans to confide in them. Demi built her post-Disney career on the premise that she sincerely cares about mental illness and about her fans. Her music, no shade intended, isn't good enough to amass such a huge fan base by itself. Her chart history speaks to that. People love her because of what she allegedly stands for.
  6.
  7. There's something incredibly powerful about being able to say "if Demi Lovato can have all of these issues and still manage to go on tour and be kind to fans, then I can at least get out of bed and go to work." That's a life-changing realisation, and Demi has deliberately positioned herself as someone who wants to provide that.
  8.
  9. That's why it's super problematic and dangerous for her to act like she did at my M&G, for example. Not only is she risking that connection (which could be the only thing inspiring one of her typical fans to persevere), but also she's perpetuating mental health stigma. It makes her seem insincere when she talks (frequently) about her struggles and how they affect her and have shaped her relationship with her fan base. It gives more ammo to the kind of people who think mental illness is overstated or outright doesn't exist.
  10.
  11. Having a bad day isn't an excuse. People are paying exorbitant amounts of money, for one, on top of all of the risks I mentioned before. At the very least, she could cancel her M&Gs on those days and issue refunds, because she is destroying her image and being a danger to people she claims to care for.
