- DELTA (old) CD 5.23 - Listen to the conversation
- Problem: she got a cat by feeding it, but her landlord doesn’t allow pets
- Solution 1: move to another apartment
- but her current place is close to campus
- Solution 2: give the cat to her mom
- but her mom already has 2 cats
- ---
- Prompt: “The students discuss possible solutions to the woman’s problem. Briefly describe the problem. Then state which solution you prefer and explain why.”
- Response:
- 1 Introduction: explain the problem and list the solutions they discuss
- 2 Recommendation: state which solution you prefer
- 3 Lead-in: “I have two reasons for this recommendation.”
- 4 First reason: “First, her mom already has two cats.”
- 5 Detail/example: “This means she knows how to take care of them and enjoys cats. Also, having three cats isn’t very different from having two.”
- 6 Second reason
- 7 Detail/example
- (8 Conclusion - if you have time)

- ETS 2 - test 1 - Listen and take notes on the conversation. Take 5 minutes to prepare a “perfect” response to the prompt.
- ---
- Record your responses to tests 2-4
- ---
- BREAK
- ---
- Listen to your responses and choose one we can hear as a class.
- Listen to your classmates’ responses. What is good and bad about each one?
- What can you do to improve your task 5 response next time?
- ---
- Read samples of yesterday's integrated writing response. What score should each receive? Why?
- ---
- Not all typos and spelling mistakes are equal:
- “instaed” is easily understood as “instead”, but “In stated” isn’t similar enough to be easily recognized
- “neice” and “nice” are not equal misspellings of “niece”
- ---
- Homework (optional): if you want grammar and spelling corrections and other suggestions about yesterday’s writing, email me with a self-evaluation about what you think you did well and poorly in each response, and perhaps an estimate of the score you think you should receive according to https://www.ets.org/s/toefl/pdf/toefl_writing_rubrics.pdf
