  1. Party:
  2. >Gorloc: Night Caste Solar, brawler and tank - talks like an ork
  3. >Leijin: Twilight Caste Solar, sorcerer - loves bullet hells, apprenticed to possibly a sideral
  4. >Jia Bao: Zenith Caste Solar, medic - a smartass, loves shitposting
  5. >Lupo: Eclipse Caste Solar, merchant - the "face" of the group when it comes to negotiations, pilots a yeddim cart
  6. >Kazumi: Dawn Caste Solar, courtesan - the youngest of the bunch.
  7.
  8. (Context: My players dealt with a demon that had replaced the Crown Prince of Jibei, and had tasked themselves with breaking down the perpetual motion engine that had been powering his manse -- as it was powered by people, effectively -- and the way they did it was to do a seance mixed with, of all things, dancing and rapping, to send the spirits still trapped there on their way home.)
  9.
  10. === THE RESOLUTION OF THE SEANCE ===
  11. The makeshift seance is taken on by two different ideologies to sending the souls of the departed, with the sorcerer's apprentice Leijin serving as the intermediary for the voices of the dead -- initially.
  12.
  13. The pyre of bones is set by Gorloc, and the rites overseen for the pyre itself by Lupo's knowledge of the etiquette. It starts off somber, as the requisite prayers and chants leave the merchant Eclipse's lips and seek their quicksilver-like way to the skeleton pyre. So far as everyone can feel, with the feeling of ghostly wind around them slowly picking up with every syllable of arcane woodtongue, it's working -- but not quite to the degree that leaves the mass of legion souls satisfied.
  14. That is, until Jia Bao and Kazumi take the stage.(edited)
  15. Seeing the risk of the ritual tipping towards making the spirits angrier - and possibly lashing out at the proponents of the ritual - Jia Bao and Kazumi opt to try to placate them with something a little bit unorthodox, but seen frequently abroad. A dance and a song, to appeal to the whims of the spirits, at the same time as the chanting of Lupo.
  16. And initially, it's a bit of an awkward situation given just how Jia Bao goes about the song part of it. The style of music she belts out, lower octave bouncing around the brass and glass of the internals of the Amrita Engine, is almost entirely unfamiliar to those from the areas around Jibei -- "rapping", a quite unknown form of performance, mixing spoken word narratives, poetry, and music.
  17. BUT.
  18. @Kazumi (Dawn) 's musical training comes into play extremely handily as Jia Bao continues to call out the spirits that have a problem with the work that the Circle is doing. It's brusque, it's confrontational, but it's got a rhythm to it - something behind the shouted word that actually links the call together.
  19. With his surprising dexterity upon the lap-laid koto, and @Jia Bao (Zenith)'s rhythm with the rapping, something Changes in the environment -- haze, warm and excited, like walking into a crowded room, starts to fill the air.(edited)
  20. The tubes and coffins fade away as the lyrics, chanting, and music blends into one head-bobbing rhythm, growing from one instrument to many, depth and complexity to the band .
  21. And to Kazumi's surprise, the other sounds are very familiar to him. Former friends, confidants and other staff that Kazumi found solace in, join him with the music.
  22. Young men and women from the other Clans of Jibei, breaking out ghostly and ethereal versions of shamisen, koto, drums, flutes, even some more western-looking instruments of bigger make and model.
  23.
  24. They're delighted. It's clear in every movement of fingers, every beat hit, every melody found. Giving the young Dawn smiles, mouthed "i missed you"s and "i'm so glad we're playing again" lost over the trance-like rhythm growing.
  25. And to further surprise, the haze grows, and Leijin's voice starts to match the rhythm as well - a vacant, possessed look in her eyes not matching the singing and improvised additions to the song of proclaimed dominance of the territory.
  26.
  27. Jia Bao's anima surges, growing in luminosity to shine light in so many of the nooks and crannies of the Amrita Engine's internals, and she Can't Stop Rapping, finding her possessed of the rhythm and flow of the fete being thrown.
  28. For those who lost their lives to fuel a deranged demon's crusade, bequeathed to a loss of destiny before it was ever their time.
  29. Everyone in the circle, even the hulking @Gorloc - Night (outoforeos) , find themselves seeing shades of the children and young adults who were sacrificed here, finally emerging and separating into actual humanoid shapes. Taking on intangible forms of the young men and women, who are dancing and cheering in a large circle around the Exalts - sometimes even clipping into the walls themselves.
  30.
  31. A surge of something beyond pride washes through you unbidden, making you tingle in all the best ways, from the hair on your head to the nails of your toes. Something suffused with what could only be called fatherly pride -- perhaps Sol Invictus himself was looking upon you, with how much light Jia Bao gave off in the seance.
  32. Soon enough, there are enough of Kazumi's ghostly confidants who've gotten to their own positions, that the koto's been more than taken for. A whisper-quiet voice only he hears, by a shade of a young man his age, tells him "Go on, one more dance. It doesn't have to be anything specific - just have fun, for once."
  33.
  34. "You're only young once, right?"
  35. More and more of the shades, all colors fo the rainbow, come into the center of the circle, dancing and cheering like they were children once again. Like the city above the Circle's heads wouldn't have to deal with such troubles anymore, now that their tyrant prince was deposed.
  36.
  37. One last dance, for those who've fallen.
  38. The Young Dawn smiles, one of the brightest and youngest ones the older of you have never seen on him before. (Granted, conditions haven't really warranted it yet, but still.)
  39.
  40. He stands, slipping off his geta, rolling up the sleeves of his yukata, and calls you five together to join in the festivities.
  41. Jia Bao, Leijin, Lupo, Kazumi and Gorloc, five lives whose threads knotted together in their pasts, come together in the center of the masses of dancing spirits and cheering ghosts, powered by the song and call.
  42.
  43. The haze is so thick that you can't see or hear outside of your little dance circle, but for a moment, within this haze... you could swear you could touch and talk to these shades, like they had taken on their reality back. Cheering, conversing, crying, laughing, yelling, dancing, singing, finally having a little taste of the life they ideally wanted to all live.
  44. Plenty of hugs are given to those that allow it, their whispers able to speak on their own and not through Jia or Lei for the time being. A little pocket of Yu-Shan, it seems, within the center of this most unholy of devices.
  45. (GM) JIMMY - Today at 5:05 PM
  46. It's unclear how much time passes, however, when you realize that the spirits have started to thin and the dancing's grown to be mostly conversing with the backdrop of the ghost band. The party atmosphere's winding down, and a few spirits seem to remain with the five of you. You're not sure exactly where the rest went -- perhaps they wandered off, perhaps the magic may have started to wear off -- but eventually, a resolution falls to the rest of the spirits who remain, still numbering in the double-digits.
  47.
  48. One spirit, who stands a bit taller, and more willowy -- clearly a young man in his mid twenties, with tied-back long hair and crane-like features -- steps forward, and gives you five the biggest bow he can muster.
  49.
  50. "Were it not for your intervention, I am sure our spirits would have bubbled out of the soil above and caused far more havoc than what that demon was planning to use us for." The shade begins, head firmly bowed as he speaks. "And... if I may speak plainly? This is far more than anyone's done for us while we were living."
  51. "Many of us in Jibei were the first children of the Clans that populate the city. The former crown prince held us as gilded hostages -- and for some of us, this was a step up to look forward to. But it was hostage nonetheless-- thrown into this infernal contraption just to be reduced to soul-stuff and skeletons, never to see our families again, to pass of old age."
  52. "You've put an end to it, finally."
  53. "That's not to say the real crown prince wouldn't dream up something to keep the peace, or that the future's guaranteed to be perfect -- but for a little citystate in the West of the Realm, you've at least ensured the torture and abuse of many that did nothing to deserve such a fate has been not only avenged, but deterred."
  54. The crane-like young man turns and gestures to the remaining shades. "We've got enough energy to finally shuffle off the mortal coil properly. To be reincarnated properly, instead of made a formless mess of Amrita."
  55. "We... would like to present something to you, as thanks. It's not much, but..." With considerable effort, the crane-boy and the rest of the spirits reach up towards the interior of the manse with outstretched hands, and with a considerable effort... something clicks, in the residences of the manse. The shades look thinner and more transparent, but smile.
  56.
  57. "Back when young Kazumi was first brought to the Manse, the former prince neglected to mention that he kept something else that was given by your parents. And, well. We managed to ferret it out and hide it away. I think I know what it is, but in the interest of not spoiling the surprise, you should go to your room and look for it."
  58.
  59. The crane-boy smiles, a very familiar smile to the Young Dawn, before turning his back to the group. "We must depart. And we're going to sing your praises to the rest in the Spirit Realm, do not fret -- you ever need us again, you can call on us."
  60.
  61. "Don't be a stranger!"
  62. "We'll miss you, but we're never far away!"
  63. "Make us proud!"
  64. "I'm going to be a rapper when I reincarnate, i swear it!"
  65. "Don't let anyone ever tell you you're ugly, okay big guy?! I won't stand for it-- i'll go smack them upside the head for you! Promise!" (that one accompanied by a wink and a coquettish grin, from a girl with twin ponytails in her hair)
  66. "Mistress Leijin, Mistress Jia Bao, your rapping was so good! Please don't stop when you go out in the world, okay?"
  67. Finally... the haze fades.
  68. And you five are left, with a pile of still-warm ashes, and a slowly-opening hatch to the extraction room above you.
  69. "Great Spirits, is it over...? That thing went on all night-- what were you five on about?"
