  1. Leisure. For Aki-sensei, that was not something she obtained very often. The duty of a priestess serving the Shinju-sama was one that took a heavy toll, although more on one's mind than their body. Free time was few and far inbetween. However, even with the emphasis on devoting oneself to the Shinju-sama as much as possible, the Taisha recognised how taxing the duties of its members were. For that reason, hobbies of some sort were permitted, and even encouraged. And now, in her rare period of free time, Aki headed off to the usual place. In her hands was a rather large bag decorated with imagery the Taisha commonly used, so it didn't clash with her priestly garb.
  2. After half an hour or so of walking, Aki reached her destination. It was a desolate hill not too far away from the Gold Tower, and the remnants of the Great Bridge could be seen away in the distance. No other people normally went through that area. Aki opened the bag.
  3. Packed away in it were pruning shears, a trowel, a gardening fork and a bag of fertiliser. To the side, a barrel filled with water, a watering can leaning on it and the end of a hose connected to a nearby faucet could be seen.
  4. "I'm back. How have you been?" - thought Aki as she looked at the plants she came to take care of.
  5. Three bushes stood proudly on the hill. Gentle light-blue chrystanthemum, elegant purple roses and a peony bush of vivid crimson.
  6. Aki began her work. After a quick inspection of the plants she saw no wilted branches that would need pruning, so she put the shears away. Using the fork, she loosened the mulch around the stems, sprinkled fertiliser on it and watered the flowers, being careful not to not overdo it. She was especially gentle with the peonies.
  7. "If only I could care for you like this..."
  8. For Aki, gardening was not merely a hobby, something to clear her mind. It was a way of coping. A way of trying to atone. For the girl nobody could ever care for anymore and for the girls she was no longer able to support by their side, this was the only thing she could do.
  9. Aki packed her tools away, put away the watering can and filled the barrel with fresh water so it would heat up under the sun later, since cold water affects plants badly. With her clean-up work done, Aki headed back.
  10. After putting away her tools in the storage room, she returned to her room at the Tower and took a shower, washing off the dirt from gardening and her weariness along with it. Since Aki still had some time left, she decided to spend the rest of it watching some comedy in her room. The room in question was without any excessive adornments, but one thing would inevitably catch the eye of anyone who entered it. It was a large, rectangular pot, placed next to the window and directly opposite of Aki's bed. Growing in the pot were not flowers, but a plain, unassuming plant. Shepherd's purse. Thirty two stems of that simple green grass with small white flowers were rising from the soil placed in the pot.
  11. Aki didn't put a significant amount of effort into caring for them. Most of the time, she just watered them occasionally. In the first place, being a common weed, they didn't require special conditions. In fact, most people would be confused as to why anyone would grow them on purpose, let alone as a potted plant.
  12. But every time Aki woke up, opened her eyes and saw the green stems dully shine under the rays of the sun from the window, a faint smile would touch her lips. The plants were strong enough to grow without her support. So Aki decided there was no reason for her to meddle.
  13. All Aki would do is watch over their growth from a distance.
