  1. “I don’t… I don’t know if I can.”
  2.
  3. I spoke up, “Are you talking about going home, or killing Noelle?”
  4.
  5. “She’s… she was my best friend.”
  6.
  7. “She’s not Noelle anymore,” I said.
  8.
  9. Sundancer shook her head.
  10.
  11. “Go,” Tattletale said. “She’s not happy like this. You do this, then you go home. You give your mom a hug, fabricate an excuse to explain why you disappeared, and then go back to life as normal. Never use your powers again, if you don’t want to. See if you can eventually convince yourself that none of this ever happened.”
  12.
  13. “It’s not that easy.”
  14.
  15. “No. But it’s a hell of a lot better than staying here, isn’t it?” Tattletale asked.
  16.
  17. “She’s my friend.”
  18.
  19. “Was,” I said. “It’s a big difference.”
  20.
  21. Sundancer looked at the mound of ice, rock and forcefields. Echidna was thrusting her clawed hands through the barriers, only for them to be reinforced.
  22.
  23. “Are there… does she have anyone inside her?”
  24.
  25. “There’s-” Tattletale started. I flew a bug into her mouth and down her throat, and she choked.
  26.
  27. “No,” I lied. “I’ve been keeping track with my bugs. Weld and the others got everyone out.”
  28.
  29. [...]
  30.
  31. The sun flew forward, melting pavement as it traveled, before it enveloped Echidna, Alexandria and the prison of ice and stone.
  32.
  33. It hung there for nearly a minute, deafening with its sizzling and crackling.
  34.
  35. The sun flickered and went out. Echidna wasn’t there any more. Only sections of her feet were still in contact with the ground, bones and claws scorched black, crumbling and decaying like any part of her did when disconnected from the core that supplied her with power.
  36.
  37. Alexandria was there in the midst of it, panting for breath.
