It definitely wasn't cheap. However, since for Kuuga we redistributed the lump sum (which we would pay to the Special Effects Research Center for a normal series) over the special effects budget per episode.  With that trick we were able to use that money for the sculpting [of the ruins in episode 2] or for CGI.
