  1. [21:11] lpf so————!
  2. [21:13] lpf the most interesting aspect is that behind the plot we are presented with, there are a lot of secrets and conspiracies. they are well foreshadowed by the scenes among nerv's important people obviously knowing more than the viewer and shinji do.
  3. [21:14] lpf (for that matter, said scenes benefit from anno's directing style. very good. large rooms, people drawn as shadows or similar trick, succession of similar shots with different characters. giving an eerily vague feel. well used to boot.)
  4. [21:14] Chihaya the atmosphere of the show was one of its stronger parts
  5. [21:14] Chihaya also, I'm on skype and free if you want to talk now
  6. [21:15] lpf the direction in these scenes was very utenian (while down to earth); and reminiscent of my own experience with kare kan(n)o.
  7. [21:15] lpf i've had enough anime discussions with roriconfan to know that i embarrass myself when that slow thinking mind tries to put an argumentation forward.
  8. [21:15] Chihaya utenaian?
  9. [21:16] altairdenebvega >slow thinking mind
  10. [21:16] altairdenebvega pls
  11. [21:16] altairdenebvega you are (not) slower than yours truly
  12. [21:17] lpf sometimes, a shot succeed to the other with a very short ellipses, or sometimes, two shots are composed very similarly but with different characters. you can also find the unnecessarily big rooms in which the characters talk (gendo's study, mostly)
  13. [21:17] Chihaya >[Doremi].Smile.Precure!.38.[704x396].[67D4DDEA].avi
  14. [21:17] Chihaya :D
  15. [21:17] Chihaya >:D
  16. [21:17] lpf hence utenian
  17. [21:17] lpf ellipse*
  18. [21:17] lpf so, back to these 'secrets'. this raises two issues.
  19. [21:17] Chihaya I really need to re watch eva sometime
  20. [21:18] lpf let me just think what was the 2nd i had in mind.
  21. [21:18] lpf oh, yes.
  22. [21:18] lpf two issues.
  23. [21:18] lpf the first issue is the pacing, on the scale of the entire series.
  24. [21:20] lpf i don't think these secrets should have waited for the later third of the series to be brought to light, or at least there had to be misato noticing things are wrong, investigating [although she did think something of the fake incident with the eva replica, but that was that] and then discovering (even if little) during the first 15 episodes.
  25. [21:21] Chihaya that was one issue I had with the series as well, how a lot of information was basically witheld from the viewer for so long to create this air of mystery
  26. [21:21] Chihaya then it was only in the latter half of the series that most things were brought to light
  27. [21:22] lpf the second issue is that the plot is completely unfinished, and the actual hierarchy (conspiracies etc) is still widely unknown.
  28. [21:22] Chihaya which if I recall correctly caused certain characters to have their motivates or justifications revealed far too late
  29. [21:22] Chihaya yes, there were quite a few things left in the air
  30. [21:22] Chihaya since the end of the series basically narrowed its scope down to Shinji's mentality while ignoring most other things brought up earlier
  31. [21:23] lpf character-wise as well, i was expecting more information with respect to how gendo 'abandoned' shinji.
  32. [21:23] Chihaya end of eva does offer some closure in the aspect of the hierachy/conspiracies, but largely turns into just a messier version of the original ending
  33. [21:24] Chihaya yes, that too. It was just kind of implied that after Yui died, Gendou didn't want anything to do with Shinji and just left
  34. [21:24] Chihaya but beyond that justification, not much was said about his motives till the end for the sake of keeping information from the audience
  35. [21:26] lpf i liked the way his professional self disregards the entirety of what 'personal' self he has and he is rapidly and fully aware of the risks and sacrifices to be made when there is no other solution.
  36. [21:26] lpf consistently depicted as such.
  37. [21:27] lpf which the other characters often react differently, since they always try to find a cop out to the dramatic situations.
  38. [21:27] lpf to which*
  39. [21:28] Chihaya hmm, well that's an interesting angle of looking at his character
  40. [21:28] lpf i also felt, but am unsure, that the later part of the series lost its focus on shinji.
  41. [21:29] lpf so when it came back with kaoru (and the last two episodes, gah...), it was abrupt.
  42. [21:29] Chihaya really? If anything it felt like it focused more on him
  43. [21:29] Chihaya of course I could be remembering wrong
  44. [21:29] Chihaya since there was some stuff about Rei, Asuka and the conspiracy with Kaiji in the latter half
  45. [21:29] lpf after toji's accident his friends left and he had no one to interact with.
  46. [21:29] altairdenebvega yeah I thought Shinji's depression became more promiment
  47. [21:29] Chihaya right
  48. [21:29] lpf i don't remember much more, in terms of internal dialogue.
  49. [21:30] Chihaya and then asuka went into her coma
  50. [21:30] Chihaya and the second rei sacrificed herself
  51. [21:30] lpf i didn't like the individual fights against the angels so much.
  52. [21:31] altairdenebvega ... not even the dancing one?
  53. [21:31] lpf good comedic relief
  54. [21:31] lpf a lot of the tension relied solely on the characters saying that the operation was incredibly risky (yet few really failed)
  55. [21:31] Chihaya I remember the second or third angel fight ending on quite a powerful note
  56. [21:32] lpf and there was many convenient 'UNKNOWN SOURCE OF POWER'
  57. [21:32] lpf being shinji's mom having her contractions
  58. [21:32] Chihaya or the issue of the evas only being able to run for a limited amount of time
  59. [21:32] Chihaya pfft
  60. [21:32] lpf wait..
  61. [21:32] lpf you say being in labour or somzething here
  62. [21:33] Chihaya yeah, but people will know what you're talking about if you saying contractions
  63. [21:33] Chihaya *say
  64. [21:33] lpf labour market :3
  65. [21:33] Chihaya looking back, there are many inconsistences and plot holes with eva
  66. [21:33] Chihaya which are kind of hard to ignore considering they are things I will fault other series for
  67. [21:33] lpf well, considering the stories regarding nerv
  68. [21:34] lpf it was quite holed
  69. [21:34] lpf but not in the 'inconsistent' sense...
  70. [21:34] Chihaya the reedeming feature of eva for me was its atmosphere and how well it maintained it throughout
  71. [21:34] Chihaya while using it to enhance shinji's (and the other characters) psychological trauma
  72. [21:34] lpf i really mostly liked the not-too-numerous scenes with nerv's important people.
  73. [21:35] Chihaya It's definitely a 6 focusing on the series' writing but gets bumped up a point for the atmosphere and personal attachment
  74. [21:35] Chihaya since I feel shinji's situation will either resonate with people or complete turn them off from the series since such a large part of it focuses on his internal thoughts
  75. [21:36] Chihaya though one could argue that the focus on character's internal thoughts is part of what makes it unique a
  76. [21:36] lpf the only bit i was interested in for shinji was the few interaction he had with his father (seeing gendo and rei, being congratulated [and subsequently realising he was clinging to an infinitely small part of his], dismissing all the rest)
  77. [21:36] lpf the only bit i was interested in for shinji was the few interaction he had with his father (seeing gendo and rei, being congratulated [and subsequently realising he was clinging to an infinitely small part of his, dismissing all the rest])
  78. [21:36] Chihaya well his situation was ultimately believable, whether one feels that makes him relatable or the most dispicable being in the universe
  79. [21:37] lpf how they i was interested in how they commune with themselves on a tomb with nobody underneath
  80. [21:38] lpf on a grave
  81. [21:38] lpf that piece of dialogue was really insightful
  82. [21:38] lpf brb
  83. [21:45] lpf also, the characters' internal monologue was very abstract and 'depicting' (as in they go nowhere in spite of there being trouble). i much prefer honey and clover's down to earth, and insightful thoughts—as in more than depicting, many parts are small epiphanies about their behaviour and relation with one another.
  84. [21:45] lpf evangelion's setting allows for much more true drama
  85. [21:45] lpf yes
  86. [21:46] lpf but honey a clover (representative of the josei demographic i love) in opposition to most high school things, does not overdo the little drama there is
