- Then he led his horse to the side fence of the garden and hitched his horse to the same tether as the six other animals which stood patiently waiting the desires of their owners. But he did not merely use the reins for the tether. Instead, he tied a length of lariat rope to the reins and hitched the other end to the bracket on the fence. Then, whispering softly to the horse, he backed the animal close to the side door of the house. He patted him gently on the neck, calming him, then backed away towards the main door, beginning to remove the neckerchief from his throat.
- He backed off a few more paces, then bent and picked up a handful of small stones. He dropped these into the centre of the kerchief, holding its four corners, joined two by two, he spent a few moments examining the main door, then lining up for the correct angle towards his horse. Satisfied, he spun the neckerchief like a sling and release two corners.
- The stones sailed through the air, several of them hitting the horse sharply on the hindquarter. The animal reacted violently, bucking and lashing out several vicious kicks at the door immediately behind it. The stranger reached the main door in four strides, turned the handle and pushed it. It swung open and he looked into a well lit room, saw cards spread across a baize-covered table: several glasses, two bottles and a few pesos. The six men around the table were staring at the side door and the stranger had entered in time to see one of his horse’s hoofs crash through.
- “Hi, fellers,” the stranger said, grinning. “Sorry to spoil the game.”
- He drew both guns at once and began to shoot.
