  1. Period 5 American Literature
  2. November 5th, 2010
  3. Campaign For a Call Girl
  4. Maggie Johnson, from Stephen Crane’s “Maggie: A Girl of the Streets,” would be a fantastic candidate for president. Maggie’s past has nothing to do with her future life, plenty of past leaders had problems in their lives even worse than her own. No candidate teems with perfection. Maggie would show the public that she improves by the day and deserves respect even though she lived in the grime-filled streets of New York during her youth. Because of this, she would try to help other people so no one would have to go through what she had to overcome. Well aware of the issues that plague the lower class, Maggie has an edge over other candidates born with a silver spoon in their mouth who bathed in the luxuries of the spoils they received. Miss. Johnson would likely attempt to shift the government towards a system more concerned with equality so everyone can get the same chances in life and to provide a healthy environment for the next generation.
  5. What one has done in the past does not define them- overcoming obstacles in one’s life matters more. One of America’s former presidents, George W. Bush admittedly abused alcohol. Additionally, Ilona Staller, elected into the Italian Parliament, applied herself as a Porn Star. These “flaws” did not stop them from pursuing their goals in life and from dedicating themselves to the public. Rumors have spread that Miss. Johnson resided as a prostitute. Johnson sold herself short before but now she sells herself in a positive manner. She has made a great effort to change. In fact, Miss. Johnson would vouch for sexual abstinence until marriage because she has gone through and has seen what effects sexual relationships and fornication can have.
  6. Maggie spent her life observing the lowest parts of society- alcoholism, rampant throughout her childhood later claimed her with its dirty hands. Johnson’s world, filled with verbal, emotional, and physical abuse shaped her entire lifestyle. Because of her humble beginnings, she would strive to improve quality of life for all. Miss Johnson always had a concern for others. She helped care for her little brothers, Tommie and Jimmie, since their mother could not fully take responsibility of them. Maggie, as we know, did not have the most pleasant childhood- she would support helping people under the poverty line and advocate more programs to help with alcoholism, since her dysfunctional family had impacted her so much throughout her lifetime, she would not want to see others fall into the same pattern that she endured. She would create a safe haven for young adults who have been kicked out of their households and would create programs that research ways to lower the infant mortality rate as a result of seeing her youngest brother, Tommie, die an untimely death.
  7. Maggie sees the good in every situation and will plan things out before she acts, for the best outcome. She would likely want to shift to a more communistic system of government because of the equality the system offers which she always had longed for as a child. She would not want a dictatorship, of course, but she would want everyone to have equal opportunities since she never had the same chances as people born into wealth.
  8. In conclusion, Maggie Johnson would act as an extremely strong candidate for office in 2010. Maggie‘s past would help impact the future, for the better. She would introduce systems to deal with poverty, alcoholism, childhood death, childhood abandonment and sexual abstinence. Lastly, Miss Johnson would strive to make things equal for everyone, to achieve a prosperous society, and to create a healthy environment for all. For the sake of America, she would keep us
