- If you've already played the first game and found it underwhelming,
- I can assure you, Drakengard 2 is a *massive* improvement. Indeed, you
- *should* play the first game before this one, as it's so clunky in
- comparison, you would have a (particularly) hard time stomaching it
- if you played the second game first.
- - The save data takes 48 kb of space. You can only have one of these
- on a single memory card, and each one limits you to only 3 save slots.
- Also, the game only supports slot 1.
- - The play time counter maxes out at 99:59.
- - Base physical damage is Str/10+ATP-1.
- - Legna's base damage depends on his form.
- Form 1 | Str-10
- Form 2 | Str+Lv+25
- Form 3 | 3*Lv + 106
- - Defense reduces damage by DFP/10.
- - There are five playable characters: two dudes (Nowe, Urick), two
- waifus (Manah, Eris), and Legna, the dragon. Each human character uses
- weapons of a certain type: Nowe uses swords, Eris spears, Manah staves,
- and Urick axes.
- - Most ground enemies fall under one of four enemy types. Characters
- have largely different multipliers that affect the weapon damage they
- deal to these enemies, as seen below.

- - You have 8 slots for weapons and 6 slots for healing items. You can
- also equip one accessory. Like before, weapons gain xp and level up,
- with Lv4 being the max. Aside from increased power, leveling up weapons
- (usually) also gives you access to new combo attacks.
- - There are two attack buttons. By default, these are set to Square
- (standard) and Triangle ("special"), but I strongly recommend you set
- special to X, so you can easily press them in quick succession.
- - All weapon attacks have a damage multiplier and a Guard Break
- multiplier.
- - Performing combos with minimal input requires you to be somewhat
- precise. Given how the timing varies between characters and weapons,
- and how it can be further affected by chain bonus, it's best to just
- resort to button-mashing. Eg. the timing for Manah's Tailwind Blade
- looks roughly like (a), but instead of trying to pull that off with
- just five inputs, you can just mash it (b).

- - Aside from the combo attacks, you also have an uppercut that floats,
- a thrust attack, a mid-air attack, an air smash, and a backflip-kick.
- - When swarmed by enemies, it's generally best to stick to your ground
- combos (and magic). However, if you can't easily hit multiple enemies
- (either because you're getting blocked or because there simply aren't
- that many enemies nearby), you can deal the most damage by using an air
- combo. Float the enemy, hit them in the air, then finish it with an air
- smash (which does increased damage to a floated enemy).
- - There are a few enemies who can't be floated, the most common of which
- is the Elite Knight.
- - Many enemies possess what I like to call 'snap attacks' (due to the
- sound effect that plays when an enemy is about to unleash one). These
- are the most powerful attacks the enemies have, and since they make the
- enemy invincible for a while, you can't interrupt them by attacking. Be
- prepared to switch to defense to avoid these attacks.
- - Each weapon has a certain magical spell attached to it. You can cast
- the spell at four different levels of power depending on how long you
- charge the spell (by holding down the button), with higher levels being
- unlocked as you level up the weapon. Charging speed varies depending on
- the spell and the character. While your character is invincible when
- casting a spell, the charging process renders you immobile and, thus,
- vulnerable. As such, it can be interrupted by enemy attacks. Not an
- issue with Lv1 magic, since the charge starts at Lv1.
- - The pink bar above your health represents your MP. Your max MP is
- unaffected by level. No exact figures for MP are visible, so I can't
- tell you what your max MP actually is (even the Official Complete Guide
- has nothing to offer on this).
- - The secondary MP bar is split into four parts and displays red blocks
- that indicate possible magic charges. Lv1 magic takes one block, Lv2
- takes two blocks, etc.
- - You generate MP by killing enemies, blocking attacks, taking damage,
- picking up Magic Spheres and using MP healing items. Manah also gains
- MP from hitting enemies (63 hits for one block) and, when she's not
- active, she innately generates MP at a rate of one block in 63 seconds.
- - Nowe and Legna share their MP in Ground+Air missions.
- - Money and Spheres disappear after 16 seconds. Money comes in three
- possible values: 10 G (silver coin), 100 G (gold coin), and 1000 G (bag
- of money). The most common enemies only drop silver coins. Most enemies
- have a 25% chance to drop money upon defeat.
- - Hitting enemies with physical attacks in quick succession increases
- your chain counter, which will then grant you certain bonuses upon
- reaching certain figures. Aside from the bonuses listed below, your
- attacking speed also increases.
- - After landing a hit, you have a few seconds to land another one before
- the counter resets. Enemies can still be hit for a while even after dying.
- Casting a spell will reset the timer.

- - Knocked down enemies instantly recover when off-screen (unless they're
- within approximately 5 meters from your character).
- - Legna attacks by breathing fireballs. In Ground+Air missions, he can
- easily mow down the most common enemies, who in turn have no way of
- attacking him. Certain enemies are resistant, however, and/or have a
- way of attacking Legna from the ground. They'll still take normal damage
- from Overdrives.
- - Enemy hitboxes are fairly generous in Air missions.
- - By holding down the attack button, you can use Legna's homing shot.
- It only deals 0,3125x damage, however, so I don't recommend using it
- at all, outside of a few, rare exceptions.
- - In Ground+Air missions, Legna has access to Overdrive attacks that
- consume MP. In Air missions, there's no MP and you can't use Overdrives.
- Instead, you have access to special attacks enabled by picking up Breath
- Spheres, which may be dropped by enemies when killed with a regular
- fireball. By default, you only have access to the vanilla Breath Sphere,
- but new ones are unlocked as you progress in the game. If the sphere
- isn't white, you can change its color by shooting it.

- - There's a useful technique that allows you to briefly fly in one
- direction while being able to aim freely. Simply tap Accelerate while
- turning to perform it.
- - Exp gained from enemies killed with Legna's Overdrives is multiplied
- by 5. Even so, you should avoid using Legna during Ground+Air missions
- when not necessary unless you're concerned about dying.
- - Free Expeditions are covered as soon as they become available (ie.
- after completing a chapter). Free Expeditions are missions you can replay.
- Story missions can't be replayed (outside of doing a New Game + playthrough).
- - The PAL version is properly converted into PAL 50Hz.
- - You really want to play the game using a controller that has at least
- a half-decent analog stick (ie. the stick is equally sensitive in opposite
- directions). If it's only a little off, take it. Unfortunately, that's
- about as good as it gets, it seems.

- - There are four difficulty levels: Easy (Standard), Normal (Challenge),
- Hard and Extreme. You can only freely choose the difficulty level of
- your first playthrough, which will be either on Easy or Normal. After
- completing this playthrough, loading the clear data will then start a
- playthrough on Hard, and completing the game again will up the difficulty
- one last time to Extreme. There is no way to lower the difficulty.
- - Difficulty affects the enemy's level of aggression, the damage they
- deal, and how much HP they have. You can (mostly) tell which difficulty
- level you're on by the color of the save data.
- - While you don't gain more Exp directly on higher difficulty levels,
- it'll be easier to increase your combo count due to the enemy's increased
- HP (kind of).

- attacking you while partially underground. This phase also lasts 30
- seconds. You can also end it by hitting him five times (thrust attacks
