  5. Familia is a fucking mess of an album. An enjoyable mess, and definitely the most I've enjoyed Camila Cabello outside of Havana. A latin-crossover album that tries to play to both the huge market in Spanish-speaking America, while never fully letting go of the American market with, and I don't think it works as that. But I think that's what Epic's aim was for the album. Camila's vision of Familia was to include a loose breakup arc. And those moments on the album where Camila actually gets intimate about her post-breakup feelings on Shawn Mendes, like relapsing on Quiet, or still being unsure if it's better to run into her ex at a party or not on Everyone at this Party. There's a sincere sweetness to it that I fell for. But I wouldn't say the album is able to maintain that atmosphere or mood, and I'm gonna put most of the blame of Epic, for getting Ricky Reed to produce the majority of Familia. There's also two huge distractions that take me out of Familia completely, the first is Ed Sheeran (I don't even hate Ed Sheeran but his performance on bam bam almost convinced me to), the second is Lola, a song tracking the life of a woman in Fidel's Cuba, which ????? (even if I respect the attempt). And yeah psychofreak is a bit of bop, especially with the haunting "pah pah pah". Familia has major Not-So-Main-Pop-Girl energy and I enjoyed it for the most part.
