  1. from /hhg/ Helluva Hotel general #830, #831
  2. ---------
  3. >owlanon gets sent to represent his noble house for meetings in d. charlies court
  4. -
  5. >"Tell me, Anon, why does your estate need so many servants?"
  6.
  7. >The other representatives seated around the long table in Pandemonium Palace grow deathly still
  8. >The Queen addressed you by your given name, not by your title
  9. >She rarely does that
  10. >You're not sure if its a good thing or a bad thing
  11. >Probably a bad thing
  12. >Any time Queen Charlotte deviates from established procedure, it generally means trouble
  13. >You gulp, and hope that your visage doesn't betray your nervousness
  14.
  15. >"...what do you mean, Your Highness?"
  16.
  17. >Charlotte shuffles through the stack of files and loose papers beside her for a moment and retrieves a folder emblazoned with your family crest
  18. >She opens it and begins to pick through the documents
  19.
  20. >"You currently 'employ' how many imps, hellhounds, succubi, etcetera?"
  21.
  22. >You open your beak to start lying, but she cuts you off
  23.
  24. >"Far more than seem to actually be doing any quantifiable work"
  25.
  26. >She raises up a bundle of papers and spreads them across the table
  27. >Overhead photographs of your family's estate and the many slapdash 'servant's quarters' that have sprung up around it
  28.
  29. >"If Overwatch's routine surveillance reports are to be believed, less than ten percent of the demons you supposedly have in your employ ever actually do any work for you."
  30. >"They seem to be working for themselves"
  31. >"I see a few of them tending to gardens here"
  32. >"A space for wordworking"
  33. >"A stage for musicians to play on"
  34. >"Why, exactly, are you spending hand-over-fist keeping the paperwork for this army of layabouts in order when you seem to not profit from it in the least?"
  35. -
  36. >well, this is it
  37. >damned if you do, damned if you don't
  38. >the Queen doesn't NEED a reason to take away your title or your life
  39. >she doesn't NEED a reason to take away the lives of those under your care
  40. >or worse, preserve them as one of those... THINGS
  41.
  42. >you don't need to look around to know they're watching you with both sympathy... And apprehension
  43. >you weigh your options here
  44. >...what answer will lead to the least amount of lives lost?
  45.
  46. >you have to be quick, though - the Queen is waiting
  47. >and she DOES NOT like to be held up
  48. >finally, you meet her gaze
  49. >it's cold
  50. >empty
  51. >lacking even the sadism of her late father's - she isn't just playing with her food
  52.
  53. >"...For peace of mind, your Highness..."
  54.
  55. >the others stare
  56. >was this really the best you could come up with?
  57.
  58. >"...For "peace of mind", Anon?" she asks
  59. >from the tone of her voice, you could tell that she would've raised an eyebrow, where you two not in the company of others
  60.
  61. >"Yes." you reply, simply, your gaze unbroken "I sincerely hope that you didn't expect that letting me keep my estate while being surrounded by massive, temporary gravestones made of concrete will not wear on my mind."
  62.
  63. >you focus on her fully now, eyes fixed upon hers
  64.
  65. >"...I keep them as my "servants" to keep the safe from you."
  66.
  67. >your tone is honest, matter-of-factly
  68. >you try to suppress every ounce of anger and revulsion, trying not to sound rebellious or cynical
  69.
  70. >"I don't care for the sinners, nor am I in any position to question your methods. But the Hellborne are a different matter. They're born into sin, not pick it up voluntarily or from their environments. Punishing them for who they are is..."
  71. >you search for the right word...
  72. >...and then...
  73.
  74. >"... distinctly human-like."
  75.
  76.
  77. >the silence is ear-piercing
  78. >you could see her expression harden
  79. >yet, at the same time, flames flare in her eyes
  80. >you caught her
  81. -
  82. Short end:
  83. >"Ah"
  84. >"Of course, of course"
  85.
  86. >The Queen neatly tucks the loose papers back into place and binds them with a paperclip
  87.
  88. >"I should have guessed"
  89. >"You and your family have always liked your...pets"
  90.
  91. >You feel the wood of the armrest splintering under the force of your talons
  92. >You know what she's really driving at here
  93. >The callous bitch
  94.
  95. >"Thank you for the clarification, Bannerman Of House Goetia"
  96. >"Now, on to the next matter"
  97. >"The remaining exterminators that were captured during the last attempt at a cleanse before the armistice was forged"
  98.
  99. >"...what about them Your Highness?"
  100.
  101. >"They are to be executed"
  102. >"Publicly"
  103. >"All of them"
  104. >"Heaven has wasted my time with one useless, spineless, feculent little excuse for an ambassador after another"
  105. >"Burning through second after second I could have spent on productive activities with one hollow promise upon hollow promise and worthless offer upon worthless offer, trying to win back their precious little flying murderers without giving anything of value in return, and I. AM. DONE."
  106. >"Vox is to clear his programming schedule for a special broadcast"
  107. >"I want every last one of them erased, using their own weapons if you can still find them"
  108. >"After that, we'll see if Heaven can get it through their thick, sanctimonious skulls that simply acting nice isn't enough to fool us"
  109.
  110. >The closest thing to a spirited debate that anyone dares conduct in Queen Charlotte's presence breaks out
  111. >You sigh to yourself in relief
  112. >You're fairly certain that all of that ultimately means that you are no longer in The Crown's crosshairs
  113. >For now
  114. ---
  115. Long end:
  116. >"...I keep them away from worse sins that human minds have imagined..." you continue, leaving tell-tale punctuation all over your sentence "...but I will not suppress their nature."
  117.
  118.
  119. >"...Their... Nature..." she replies, slowly
  120.
  121. >you can already tell where this is going
  122. >that's the problem with becoming a tyrant like this
  123. >you become predictable
  124. >and predictability doesn't inspire fear
  125.
  126. >"Yes." you reply
  127.
  128. >"...Nature, molded from sin." she says, simply "Sloth, Gluttony, Lust, Greed, Wrath, Envy, Pride... Murder, violence, larceny, deceit..."
  129.
  130. >she stares deeply into your eyes
  131.
  132. >"...And treason."
  133.
  134. >you're not shaken
  135. >phlegmatic, even
  136. >powerful as she might be, the fear she inspires had become tedious
  137. >boring
  138. >it's a hateful thing that you, a creature of leisure, has to put up with
  139. >and that's the problem
  140. >her father at least had charm, if only a superficial one
  141.
  142. >...and he didn't try to pretend like he was fucking Abaddon
  143. >didn't act like his downfall had cursed him to be the most terrifying entity in existence - he knew it damn well that others had it worse
  144. >and he reveled in it
  145.
  146. >this?
  147. >this was childish
  148. >she was being childish
  149.
  150.
  151. >you became downright nonchalant, though, you didn't slacken your politeness - SOMEONE had to act mature here
  152.
  153. >"You needn't worry about treason, your highness."
  154.
  155. >your voice betrays your tiredness
  156. >you're done, either way
  157. >might as well be honest
  158.
  159. >"You killed your father."
  160.
  161.
  162. >the room somehow grows even quieter before
  163. >it's as if it's swallowing up all sounds
  164.
  165.
  166. >"You took his throne." you continue "Killed everyone who would oppose you. You keep torturing and killing sinners, day after day. Heaven weeps at the sight of your great works."
  167.
  168. >you're barely masking your bitterness at this point
  169.
  170. >"I've no lofty goals regarding the inner workings of Hell, because, quite frankly, there aren't any. It's all a well-oiled machine of annihilation, with our estates left around... Basically as potted plants for decoration."
  171. -
  172. >her own expression regains some neutrality, as your facade continues to crumble
  173.
  174. >"...That's one way to call the generosity of the crown." she says, simply
  175.
  176. >emotion is a show of hands
  177. >"real adults" don't show any
  178.
  179. >...God above, you miss the old Princess Charlie
  180.
  181. >"I know a gilded cage when I see one, your Highness." you reply, dispassionate "After all, we were all raised one."
  182.
  183. >allowing yourself to frown, your gaze, unblinking and unbroken, continues to meet hers
  184.
  185. >"Do you wish for me to commit genocide on your own people?"
  186.
  187.
  188. >so, so many things you could've added to that
  189. >but you kept it short
  190. >no euphemisms, no round sentences
  191. >you spelled it out to her
  192.
  193.
  194. >"...They're your servants." she replies, finally
  195. >you don't allow yourself any relief, though, and it pays off
  196. >she's not done just yet
  197. >"...However, I expect you to follow orders."
  198.
  199.
  200. >you have the means
  201. >you can snuff them all out, and then yourself, before she can get to them
  202. >there's peace, still, in the Abyss
  203.
  204. >ah
  205. >your desperate mental rebellion had caught her attention
  206. >your eyes must've flared up
  207. >question is, does she know the meaning behind them?
  208. >had she read your mind?
  209. >...would she feel fear if she did?
  210.
  211.
  212. >"I will."
  213.
  214. >it sounded like a threat
  215.
  216.
  217. >the meeting carries on, and, eventually, you're all dismissed
  218. >but - adhering to yet another power trip cliché - she makes you stay "after class"
  219. >...let's put it to the test, then:
  220. >has she, or has she not read your mind?
  221.
  222.
  223. >"...Anon, regarding your orders--"
  224. >"I'll kill them."
  225.
  226. >she halts, staring at you
  227. >you glare back
  228.
  229. >"All of them. Men, women, children. I'll do it with my own bare hands, if necessary. Send them straight to Abaddon, and then do in myself."
  230.
  231. >you can feel your glare intensify
  232. >her face lights up red from your eyes
  233. -
  234. >"Do whatever you want with me, with my body and mind. But I won't let you touch them. I won't let you turn them into your drones. I don't care for your throne, or the nightmare you created and perpetuate. But I WILL NOT let you take them."
  235.
  236. >there are no further words
  237. >no threats, no promises
  238. >you didn't dawdle with any fanciful euphemisms
  239. >you stated facts
  240.
  241.
  242. >ass you calm down from your rage, you finally notice that her expression had changed
  243. >she was... surprised... at your response
  244. >you realize you cut her off
  245.
  246. >"...Your orders, Anon..." she said, finally speaking up "...Are to ensure that your... "Servants"... Are prepared for a potential attack from Heaven..."
  247.
  248. >she's being choosy with her words
  249. >you've disturbed her
  250. >she had to change course
  251. >you keep holding her gaze
  252.
  253. >"...on the off chance that the inner line of defense fails, it'll be upon your judgement to evacuate, or..."
  254. >she pauses, regaining lost composure
  255. >"...eliminate them."
  256.
  257. >you give a curt nod
  258. >she holds your glare
  259.
  260.
  261. >"...You seem quite eager to keep them from actually being useful." she says, finally "I find it rather hard to see anything more than Greed in what you've said."
  262.
  263. >oh, you bitch
  264.
  265. >"Abaddon shall grant them peace, where all you can give is fear and pain." you reply, coldly "But if you're so eager to hold these poor, unfortunate souls under your heel, then why don't you go, and conquer the Abyss?"
  266.
  267. >you can tell she's losing her temper
  268. >you relish in it
  269.
  270. >"...After all, setting of Abaddon MIGHT just erase this sinful Creation early on, and leave Heaven with nothing, but the abject failure of their works."
  271.
  272. >you raise your eyebrows to emote a bit more
  273.
  274. >"...It would be EVERYTHING you've desired."
  275.
  276.
  277. >"...You are dismissed, Anon."
  278.
  279.
  280. >you might die today
  281. >you may not make it pass the hour
  282. >perhaps, you only have minutes left
  283. >those under your care might be in imminent danger
  284.
  285. >but it matters not to you now - the Queen has been reminded of her limits
  286. >and she won't forget
  287. -----
  288. I have no idea If I save this right.
  289. -
  290. Just scrap my post entirely I didn't realize anon had enough content in him to fill multiple posts
  291. -
  292. >Just scrap my post entirely
  293.
  294. why?
  295.
  296. I like it
  297. -
  298. It doesn't really fit in with the rest of the story. Charlie brushing off Owlnon and retaking the wheel of the conversation by ordering all the POWs to be executed doesn't tie in to she and Owlnon having a private moment at all. It's a fork in the road that leads to a different place than where we're going.
  299. -
  300. oh... well, we can make it non-canon or something.
