  1. Garr arched his back out of a deepening slouch to a cacophony of pops and cracks. The ookami boy closed his eyes, cocked his head back with a grimace, and peeled himself off of the bench and onto his feet.
  2.
  3. It was so much like a person trying to pull a dusty book off of a tightly packed shelf that it was a wonder Rose and Nefelie didn't fall over to fill the space he left as he sidled past and out onto the field.
  4.
  5. His eyes open, he peered off towards the place where Savannah and the Perrafin girl had gone at it. Whatever he saw didn't change his expression, but it did chance him a glance over at the girl, now opposite on a broad field.
  6.
  7. Was he really going to get into it with one of the human shaman - even if she was a little girl? The savage swung his arms in broad arcs before finally letting them fall limp.
  8.
  9. He turned his body towards her, tilted his head back, and propped his hands behind it as he popped his back for the benefit of whatever punishment might be waiting. His voice didn't sound unenthusiastic, though.
  10.
  11. "How was being - and ready for more?"
  12. (Garrelei)
  13. Savannah looked up from her feet, grimacing at Garrelei. Her cheeks were red and rosey and she had yet to catch her breath.
  14.
  15. "Does it look like it went well?! I just lost to... what, a pampered little eight year old?! She was probably taught magic from the time she was born." She kicked up her staff, grabbing it and holding it close to her chest.
  16.
  17. Excuses spewed from her mouth.
  18.
  19. "Not fair... if everyone had the same education..." Wow, hold on there, little communist! Savannah cut herself off, staring at Garrelei. He was offering her a chance of redemption.
  20.
  21. This was her chance to fix her reputation! The ookami surrounding her weren't an important crowd, but at this time, they were the only ones she had.
  22.
  23. "Fine."
  24.
  25. She slammed her staff against the ground. What little grass remained where she stood lit up in flames. She wasn't in her prime state, mana and body beaten down by a battle just moments before, but determination was enough to fuel Savannah towards success.
  26.
  27. "Let's go."
  28. (Savannah)
  29. "Not pampered - not eight years old, either," Garr chided back at her with a frown.
  30.
  31. The boy who ate yokai was at least self-aware enough to know he didn't stack up in Savannah's eyes if this was going to be a battle of the privileges.
  32. Narrowing his own, he bent his knees, leaned forward over the center of his weight, and focused on only a recent comrade-in-arms. He drew his lips back in a taut, predatory snarl as they drew closer to the start.
  33.
  34. Showing teeth was meant to ward off predators from oneself. He didn't consciously think of whatever posture one showed towards prey, but grinned on all the same at the mage he'd just watched blasting and blitzing around the field.
  35.
  36. Without a staff, spear, or anything proper to smack against the ground himself, the ookami lifted his front foot and stomped it down on every fourth count. Each time he seemed to lean in closer, looking ever more ready to fall over himself until he finally did in a charge.
  37.
  38. "Let's go!"
  39. (Garrelei)
  40. WHAM! Again, Savannah slammed her staff against the dirt. Dust billowed up at her feet, and when it faded away, steam rose up in it's stead. The air around her shimmered and twisted, unstable and unsteady from an overwhelming amount of heat and Savannah's shaky grasp on time.
  41.
  42. "Don't expect too much," Savannah taunted begin an antagonizing grin, "I only go all out on privileged noblegirls."
  43.
  44. The water in the air condensed, floating around Savannah like protective orbs. They shifted and twirled, ready to whip out at her command.
  45.
  46. "On your count!"
  47. (Savannah)

  59. Scalding hot steam erupted from Savannah every time Garr threatened to get close. She brought her flaming hands up to one of the orbs of water circling her and thrust it in the Ookami's direction, blasting him with air hot enough to singe his clothing.
  60.
  61. And when she stepped back to breathe every now and then, any damage he had done to her seemed to reverse. Time magic was at work, repairing the tiny imperfections on Savannah's skin, the ache in her bones, the dipping of her mana reserves...
  62.
  63. It seemed a good beating was all Savannah needed to propel her forward - every time Garrelei managed to land a hit on her, she struck him with power tenfold.
  64.
  65. She skidded back for a quick break, wiping a smear of dirt away from her cheeks.
  66.
  67. "What, are you tryin' to hunt a rabbit? I bite!"
  68. (Savannah)
  69.
  70. "Grrr!"
  71.
  72. Tiny imperfections were all he seemed able to leave! Even those Garr had trouble making out as the ookami, his bare arms scalded a gentle pink, wiped the water from his eyes and stumbled to a stop.
  73.
  74. It wasn't good enough for the boy to lurch and lunge past her each time. Maybe he tripped her up, sure; but he looked between her and his fists in wonder in the brief break he had across the now-furrowed field, and it was clear he hadn't even really hit her once.
  75.
  76. Hot showers were doing wonders for Savannah. If he had a concept of what they were, Garr might have been less red in the face - with anger, rather than first degree burns.
  77.
  78. He slapped himself on the cheek and howled back at her in rage and pain. The white handprint seemed to take up most of his face as it split wide with a yell.
  79.
  80. "Bite THIS!"
  81.
  82. (Garrelei)

  96. It's slowly becoming more and more evident that Savannah's steam is running out. She runs slower, stumbling and fumbling around her feet. The dirt's been kicked up and it clouds the air, caking her vision in a coat of dust.
  97.
  98. But she won't stop fighting.
  99.
  100. Her flames grow weaker, fizzling out into small embers... but she won't give up!
  101.
  102. And although she's tired, she isn't defeated. Savannah drags herself forward, focusing her piercing stare on Garrelei. Every strike he makes, she heals tenfold - every scratch is replaced with a tougher, more calloused patch of skin.
  103.
  104. Time is working in Savannah's favor.
  105.
  106. And when she finally finds herself standing before Garrelei, like an open target, she raises her staff and WHOPS him on the head hard enough to daze him for a few moments.
  107.
  108. And with that, the fight is over. The water around Savannah drops to the ground, soaking back into the dehydrated grass. The simmering air ceases, and the flow of time regulates.
  109.
  110. "Good job, but you gotta hit harder than that."
  111. (Savannah)
