  1. GoldWaving for HLDJ Tutorial 2.0
  2. by Patchu!S3SubSEKAI
  3.
  4. CONDENSED TUTORIAL FOR PEOPLE WHO KNOW WHAT THEY'RE DOING (Otherwise skip this and read the rest):
  5. 1. Open file
  6. 2. Bandpass 100-5512
  7. 3. Resample to 11025 KHz
  8. 4. Optional: apply equalizer based on song (see table further down or make your own)
  9. 5. Match volume to -18dB
  10. 6. Save as 16-bit mono wave.
  11.
  12. Fool-PROOF TUTORIAL FOR PEOPLE WHO DON'T:
  13.
  14. You need the following programs: GoldWave and HLDJ. Instructions to set up HLDJ can be found here.
  15. Goldwave isn't free, but there's a free trial with a limited number of total actions allowed.
  16. # Install all of the programs you downloaded above.
  17.
  18.
  19. # 1. Open your file in goldwave. Most formats are accepted. If there are unicode characters(Japanese, etc.) in the filename or filepath,
  20. you will need to rename it or move it before opening.
  21.
  22.
  23.
  24. # 2. Open the bandpass tool and create a bandpass from 100Hz to 5512Hz. This will trim off any barely-audible bass and improve the end
  25. result slightly.
  26.
  27.
  28.
  29. # 3. Next, resample the song to 11025Hz. This is the frequency that Source uses. For the HL1 engine, use 8000Hz.
  30. Warning: make sure you have selected Resample and not Playback Rate, as the latter will cause your song to sound distorted.
  31.
  32.
  33.
  34. # 4. This step, although optional, can improve the quality of your goldwave significantly.
  35. Select the Equalizer tool and a window with a bunch of boxes should come up. What goes into these boxes depends on the audio type.
  36. Also, don't touch the master dB. Here is a handy table containing the presets I use:
  37.
  38. [ 0.00][-0.50][-1.50][-2.50][-1.00][-0.50][ 0.00] for classical music
  39. [-2.00][-1.00][ 0.00][-1.50][-1.50][-1.00][ 0.00] for general music (Vocals, synth, less electronic)
  40. [-2.00][-1.50][-0.50][-1.50][-0.50][-1.00][ 0.00] for general music (Vocals, synth, more electronic)
  41. [-2.00][-2.00][ 0.00][-2.00][-1.00][ 0.00][ 0.00] for hardcore
  42. [-2.00][-2.00][-0.30][-2.10][-0.90][-1.00][ 0.00] for hardrave
  43. [-2.00][-2.00][-2.00][ 0.00][-1.00][-0.50][ 0.00] for rock/light metal
  44. [-2.00][-2.00][-0.50][-2.20][-0.80][-2.00][ 0.00] for touhou (the newer games, not the PC98 ones)
  45.
  46. If you really want your music to shine, however, I recommend experimenting and finding your own, or even using the Parametric EQ.
  47. Looking at the graph in the Parametric EQ can also help you decide what values to put into the normal equalizer.
  48.
  49.
  50.
  51. # 5. Next, select match volume. This will normalize your song to within acceptable volume levels for micspam. If you change the value,
  52. the final peak will change. You want this to be around 0.7 to 0.9dB. A value of -18 will usually work, but some songs might require lower.
  53. Hanz' Note: Make sure you have the second item, which I belive is "reduce cutting" or something like that, checked. Also, make sure
  54. that none of the numbers are red. This means they're too loud.
  55.
  56.
  57.
  58. # 6. Lastly, save your file as a 16-bit mono wave file, otherwise it will again sound distorted, or not be recognised in-game.
  59.
  60.
  61. Tips:
  62. # You can save your own presets using the dropdown box at the bottm of each window. Just type a name in and hit the green plus sign.
  63. # You can also overwrite the default for each, by typing default into the box and hitting the plus sign.
  64. # You can set the default save format in Options->File Formats->Default Save format.
  65. # Setting your voice recieve and transmit volumes to maximum in TF2/CSS will improve the quality you transmit and hear micspam at.
  66. # You can still talk in TF2 with HLDJ loaded. Just hold down your normal talk key while not micspamming.
  67. # Typing 1 in the console will refresh your current directory, 2 will go up a directory, and la will list the current directory. As the wait
  68. command doesn't work properly in TF2, you may have to input 1 or la more than once for a directory change to show.
