  1. [1:51 AM] Rook: I remember thinking that Oakland was a lot like Detroit at some parts
  2. [1:51 AM] notthepenguins: because it was all like
  3. [1:51 AM] Rook: Although it wasn't nearly abandoned enough
  4. [1:51 AM] notthepenguins: "Hey this is pretty nice and not sketchy"
  5. [1:51 AM] Rook: For me it was like, run down warehouses and ghettos and I'm here like
  6. [1:51 AM] notthepenguins: "ladeda"
  7. [1:51 AM] notthepenguins: ah, yeah
  8. [1:51 AM] Rook: "oh wait people live here???? this isn't like detroit at all"
  9. [1:51 AM] notthepenguins: lol
  10. [1:51 AM] Rook: because Detroit half the fun is figuring out if there's any crackheads squatting in the buildings
  11. [1:51 AM] Rook: (they usually aren't)
  12. [1:51 AM] Rook: There's this one place in particular
  13. [1:51 AM] Rook: It's an abandonded hospital, right?
  14. [1:52 AM] notthepenguins: oh god
  15. [1:52 AM] Rook: I forget the address but it's not far from Mexicantown and Royal Oak
  16. [1:52 AM] notthepenguins: this is goin to spooktown
  17. [1:52 AM] Rook: The place is literally
  18. [1:52 AM] Rook: all windows
  19. [1:52 AM] Rook: broken
  20. [1:52 AM] Rook: glass strewn everywhere like spores of plants over a field
  21. [1:52 AM] Rook: moss creeping over everything
  22. [1:52 AM] Rook: The whole (MASSIVE) lot is barren of people(edited)
  23. [1:52 AM] Rook: But plants?
  24. [1:52 AM] Rook: There's plenty.
  25. [1:52 AM] Rook: It is genuinely urban praerie
  26. [1:53 AM] notthepenguins: what is this, a post apocalyptic tv show filming site
  27. [1:53 AM] Rook: It's Detroit.
  28. [1:53 AM] Rook: If you woke up in it
  29. [1:53 AM] Rook: You'd be forgiven for thinking WW3 or WWZ went down
  30. [1:53 AM] Rook: I am not exaggerating when I say there is a literal field of broken glass.
  31. [1:53 AM] notthepenguins: jeez
  32. [1:54 AM] Rook: That said, I'm pretty sure some people live there sooooometimes
  33. [1:54 AM] notthepenguins: I mean we joke about it but it's another thing to get the actual descriptions
  34. [1:54 AM] Rook: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/pixable/this-abandoned-hospital-in-detroit_b_6655544.html this isn't the place in question
  35. The Huffington Post
  36. This Abandoned Hospital in Detroit Is Reality, Not a Set on 'The Walking Dead'
  37.
  38. [1:54 AM] Rook: but it's a place
  39. [1:54 AM] Rook: lemme see if I can find the one...
  40. [1:54 AM] Rook: http://www.detroiturbex.com/content/healthandsafety/uch/img/3.jpg it's not this but I just want you to know this is the nice one
  41.
  42. [1:54 AM] Rook: as in you look at this and think "oh that's in good shape"
  43. [1:55 AM] Rook: because that's how fucked so much of the town is
  44. [1:55 AM] notthepenguins: jeez
  45. [1:56 AM] Rook: https://abandonedrelics.files.wordpress.com/2016/06/abandoned-united-community-hospital.jpg?w=640 hhhhhere's a good one
  46.
  47. [1:56 AM] Rook: I forget if this is it
  48. [1:56 AM] Rook: I remember it's like...
  49. [1:56 AM] Rook: It's like 6 blocks if that from Sinai-Grace
  50. [1:56 AM] Rook: It's annoying me because I know exactly where it is
  51. [1:56 AM] Rook: But I don't know what it is called -_-
  52. [1:56 AM] Rook: The thing about driving in Detroit is that neighborhood gentrification is like...
  53. [1:56 AM] Rook: It's a pretzel, is the thing
  54. [1:57 AM] Rook: You can literally look at houses across the street and see townhouses-pushing-on-mansions
  55. [1:57 AM] Rook: And on the other
  56. [1:57 AM] Rook: It's all abandoned ghetto, and field
  57. [1:57 AM] Rook: And then you see non-abandoned ghetto wound like thread through little store blocks and more abandoned hoods (usually hoods with people in them also have a bunch of broken down houses!) next to abandoned nice-looking houses
  58. [1:57 AM] Rook: So many houses were built in the 1950s that are just... gone now.
  59. [1:58 AM] Rook: They were pretty once but their neighborhoods are empty and filled with crime and nothing of especial commercial value so they just sit there.
  60. [1:58 AM] Rook: Hundreds and hundreds.
  61. [1:58 AM] notthepenguins: jeez
  62. [1:58 AM] Rook: http://www.theseekerbooks.com/detroit/AbandonedMore.html
  63. [1:58 AM] Rook: this is... pretty accurate
  64. [1:58 AM] Rook: The thing that really is trippy though is that there's lots of money just... blocks away at times.
  65. [1:58 AM] Rook: There's rich neighborhoods!
  66. [1:58 AM] Rook: And rich houses!
  67. [1:58 AM] Rook: And rich businesses!
  68. [1:58 AM] Rook: Just... y'know.
  69. [1:59 AM] Rook: Not many. And they don't engage with the community. (one college in the area? literally gated off with guards)(edited)
  70. [1:59 AM] Rook: Not anywhere but the heart of downtown which is basically all skyscraper any huge tower development and only really rich people live there >.>
  71. [1:59 AM] notthepenguins: of course
  72. [1:59 AM] Rook: the burger king across the street from said college
  73. [1:59 AM] Rook: I kid you not
  74. [2:00 AM] Rook: Has massive bulletproof glass/hard plastic rotating stiles that they hand food through and take orders from
  75. [2:00 AM] Rook: Specifically so they can't get held up
  76. [2:00 AM] notthepenguins: ...what
  77. [2:00 AM] notthepenguins: is this fucking shadowrun
  78. [2:00 AM] Rook: You literally can't make the other person working register hear you.
  79. [2:00 AM] Rook: You have to knock.
  80. [2:00 AM] Rook: I was there just last week because I go every week or so for my DND group with family
  81. [2:00 AM] Rook: This is RIGHT across the street from the college!
  82. [2:01 AM] Rook: (which is a private Catholic college, University of Detroit Mercy)
