1. The river water was cold, of course, but better cold water than gunfire, and after several long moments of listening and hearing only water Lois kicked her way toward the surface. The moment she broke the surface she took a desperate gasp of air.
2.
3. There was no sound of gunfire, but so when the water closed back over her head she took a moment to think. No shouts, either… okay. Let’s try floating, then. Extra air helps, right? Experimentally she tugged at her wrists. Lois swore internally as it only served to chafe her wrists. Kicking her way back to the surface, the swearing became out loud and articulated.

7. As a result of her river adventure, Lois was still rather damp when she walked into the front doors of the Battery Park Residences. Less damp than before, of course—though her hair was still dripping—and she was still all over dirt. (No amount of time in the sun could really fix the gunk of the Hudson River, after all.) She stood in the foyer, eying the list of names and assigned apartments critically.
8.
9. If she happened to be blocking anyone’s view or path, she really didn’t care. Nor did she care about the dirty water she continued to squeeze out of her hair all over the floor.
10.
11. (And maybe, if you caught a glimpse of her when she walked in, you might have a question about why her hair was windswept and what that red and blue blur was that dropped her off.)

15. Well over a couple hours later, Lois had managed to find a meal, fresh clothes, and (most importantly in her book) a long, hot shower. Her hair once again dripping all over—but now at least clean dripping—she moved on to a thorough exploration of her surroundings. After all, if she was going to be living here (though the how and why still fascinate her) she might as well familiarize herself with the building and all its facilities.
16.
17. All of them.
18.
19. Lois walked around, trying doors in curiosity to see what was open, what was closed; what closets contained which supplies, which rooms seemed to be unoccupied, which stairwells had mysteriously closed exits, where the roof access was located… if it could be discovered without lockpicks, she would find it.
20.
21. She started with the first floor, of course, but eventually she’d make her way upwards, opening any door she can find.
