- Then we took our arms, and all my sons were with me except one who was sick. When we had mounted, we went after it, and as soon as we caught up with it at a lake, where it had entered to drink—the lake was not very big—we surrounded it on all sides, so that it could only come out past one of us. When it saw itself thus surrounded, it stood still as if it didn’t want to move, and then I told one of my sons to strike it. He struck it so that the lance head appeared on the other side of its leg. It uttered a cry so agonized and frightened that there’s no knight in the world who wouldn’t have been terrified, had he heard it. What shall I tell you? The cry was so strange and eerie that not one of us could hold himself in the saddle, and we all fell unconscious to the ground.
- When I regained consciousness, I found myself struck through the body by a lance stroke such that I thought I would die at once. And when I looked around me, expecting help from my sons, I found them all eleven dead.
