- [07:07] <@Icecylee> ilru!
- [07:09] <@Icecylee> I was prodding peter about accepting your VV dude, but there was a concern that probably needs addressing. Basically being that it's like... less golden age of piracy, more modern piracy. More hijacking and hostage/randoming/stealing stuff with small crews, less giant blasting cannons and boarding parties and the like, and what you wrote down seemed to imply you were thinking the latter.
- [07:11] <ilru> Hmn...
- [07:12] <@Icecylee> Since the settings already hit the point where old school pirating stopped being practical due to weapon and ship technology advances :(
- [07:14] <ilru> I don't really know modern piracy though...
- [07:15] <@Icecylee> It's kinda.... one part bank heists, one part terrorism, add boats.
- [07:15] <NinjaWeazel> you basically take a small crew, hit the boat at night, sieze control of the bridge/engine room/armory, kill everyone you dont plan on ransoming.
- [07:20] <ilru> That... sounds like he'd have a hard time referring to himself as a gentleman of fortune.
- [07:20] <NinjaWeazel> there is not a lot gentlemanly about it no
- [07:20] <@Icecylee> Not that old school piracy was really much better on the whole,
- [07:20] <ilru> Crap...
- [07:20] <ilru> Yeah, but they still -called- themselves that.
- [07:20] <@Icecylee> but it's a little harder to romanticis it
- [07:21] <Peter`> well, you can think of other forms of marine crime
- [07:21] <Peter`> clearly, you can -really solidly- focus on the ransoming bits -- if you raid a ship belonging to a big company, they are very unlikely to shoot back
- [07:21] <NinjaWeazel> smuggling is usually a lot less full of bloody murder, also.
- [07:21] <Peter`> you can also run large cargo shipments past tariffs - basically, dodging proper ports to make illegal shipments
- [07:21] <ilru> *nods*
- [07:21] <Peter`> You could engage in fraud, picking up shipments that don't belong to you via forged papers and a quick tongue.
- [07:22] <ilru> I guess I just kinda liked the whole "gentleman of fortune turned soldier of fortune" play of phrase.
- [07:22] <Peter`> (Also, picking up ships that don't belong to you via etc etc etc.)
- [07:22] <Peter`> Like, there's a definitely a way to play a handsome, romanticized, gentleman of fortune pirate in this era, you just need to diversify your portfolio and be aware of the era you're operating in
- [07:22] <Peter`> the existence of radio makes exchanges of cannons difficult for non-state actors
- [07:23] <ilru> How so?
- [07:24] <NinjaWeazel> it's super-easy to call for help.
- [07:24] <ilru> (Also is there any... particular reason a modern pirate kills non-ransom targets instead of just shoving them over the side and dropping a lifeboat or two?)
- [07:25] <NinjaWeazel> (it's a lot easier? and it scares the bejeezus out of the ones you haven't shot yet.)
- [07:25] <ilru> Oh, yeah, well I basically envisioned the night of the fall to be pretty much "let's harass these jerkoffs a bit", guerilla sort of thing.
- [07:25] <Hildegyth> also in this particular age it stops them from whipping out their smartphones
- [07:25] <Hildegyth> though i believe we're not quite at life-modern yet
- [07:25] <ilru> ... though I guess that doesn't really work when you're on a ship.
- [07:25] <Peter`> we're not no
- [07:26] <Peter`> basically the reason is "if there's radio, raids on ships need to happen a lot further out at sea, which means... well, a lifeboat is as good as dead, anyway", iirc?
- [07:26] <Hildegyth> pr much
- [07:26] <Peter`> whereas in the age of sail, if a ship vanished, no one would notice
- [07:26] <@Icecylee> easier to fully seize control of a thing if you just kill people that resist rather then cutting them lose and risking them getting bakc on and ont being accounted for a well
- [07:27] <Peter`> HONESTLY, I'd be -mostly- fine with your character pitch as long as the lingo was mildly updated
- [07:27] <@Icecylee> which is more important the smaller your crew is
- [07:27] <Peter`> it just sorta sounds like a 17th / 18th century pirate as opposed to early 20th century, which is where we playing
- [07:27] <ilru> How about... a small crew of raiders and smugglers, general ne'er-do-wells who aren't particulaly -liked- by any port except maybe New Grus, so they live on a fairly large vessel that they move about on to make capturing them more trouble than it's worth.
- [07:28] <Hildegyth> http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/RuthlessModernPirates this might help if you wanna stare at how modern pirates get lensed in culture too
- [07:28] <ilru> There's a few places like Vermissa where they've managed to be liked enough to be allowed to berth for a day or two on occasion and share a mug of grog, but generally if they stay on land they're gonna be rounded up.
- [07:28] <@Icecylee> smuggling's often less deadly yeah
- [07:28] <Mokura> ah nerts the ~MIASMA WARNING~ sesh is full
- [07:29] <ilru> Yeah, I was kinda looking forward to that one... :<
- [07:29] <Mokura> (I'm looking at tomorrow's sesh but I'm not entirely sure if I'd get sidetracked AGAIN or not)
- [07:29] <Hildegyth> rip :(
- [07:29] <Peter`> yeah, that'd work fine
- [07:29] <ilru> And I can't get in on Peter's either, my class ends at 5:20 EST and then I'd have to get back home.
- [07:29] <Peter`> I mean
- [07:29] <@Icecylee> also vermissa had a *really good* navy so pirating would have been much harder there anyway (smuggling's all over though :D)
- [07:30] <Mokura> I never intend to bail, I just seem to attract Things That Require Attention while I'm trying to be in a session
- [07:30] <Peter`> I understand moku
- [07:30] <Peter`> at times one must make their own luck
- [07:30] <ilru> Which is possibly one of the reasons they don't do anything that would bother the Vermissans. :D
- [07:30] <@Icecylee> yeah
- [07:30] <ilru> Damnit, spawn yeh muckle-darned FATE, I want those ten seals!
- [07:31] <Hildegyth> also ilru i cannot let any discussion of modern piracy go by without mentioning black lagoon
- [07:31] <Hildegyth> go watch black lagoon it's pretty much the only anime examination of modern piracy out there
- [07:31] <Mokura> ooh I get to see Hildegyth in action
- [07:32] <Hildegyth> (and gives a pretty good overview of how the tone might shift -- they're a team of four, for instance)
- [07:33] <Hildegyth> it's a few decades north of where VV is sitting still, but might be worth glancing at
- [07:33] <Hildegyth> hopefully yes!!!
- [07:33] <Hildegyth> i am REALLY HOPING i don't fuck this up
- [07:33] <Mokura> out of curiosity what are your plans? like you have some tanky stuff, but I also see Samurai powers with a base 4 MAG
- [07:34] <Mokura> and then I remember things like paladin have 3 MAG here
- [07:35] <ilru> I.. dunno how much I really want to get into modern piracy beyond what I need to know to play Knehimal.
- [07:36] <@Icecylee> it's Not Good Times in the slightest no
- [07:40] <Hildegyth> samurai is because i want the buffy powers from there, and also, doublehand
- [07:40] <Mokura> ooh okay
- [07:40] <Hildegyth> so that i can do super badass vendettas
- [07:41] <Mokura> I'm mostly there for Asura and Murasame 'cause I'll pretty much always have the MAG to support it
- [07:42] <Mokura> maybe go back once I pick up Slots in Corsair
- [07:42] <Mokura> then I get happy fun times no matter what I land on (except snake eyes)
