- Outside, Jason was bending down in front of the cruiser.
- “Let’s get out and run,” yelled Halo, amazed that she was now calling the shots. What kind of cop was this guy? “Go!”
- The world outside the car shifted dramatically.
- Halo felt her center of gravity moving and quickly realized that it was the vehicle, not the surroundings, which were tilting. She peered out through the gore-splattered windshield to see that the hood was rising up Jason’s body.
- “Oh God,” said Mahler, his voice now female operatic. “He’s gonna flip us!”
- Halo frantically twisted her car door handle and felt the exit pop open an inch. Then everything spun around.
- Jason rose stiffly to his full height, bringing the cruiser up with him. He watched, entranced, as the metal box swung into the air, slowly becoming a vertical structure, resting on its back bumper. Screams issued from within, like kids on a fairground ride. Momentum did the rest. The police car teetered, then continued to tumble backwards. It landed on its roof with a savage rending of metal and glass.
