  1. German Peasant's Revolt = German peasants rebel against dukes, barons, etc. because Luther has been criticizing authority. Luther tells them rebelling against secular (not religious) rulers is wrong. His book is called "Against the murderous, thieving hordes of peasants."
  2. Geneva = City in Switzerland, John Calvin takes it over. He runs it as a dictatorship of Protestant religious leaders (a theocracy).
  3.
  4. Luther's view of the sacraments
  5. A sacrament is a thing you do regularly that is holy. Luther dumped all except Eucharist (taking the wine and wafers that represent the body and blood of Christ) and Baptism (putting a baby under water).
  6. Luther says you go to heaven by faith -- belief in god. Catholics say you go by living a proper Catholic life (good deeds). Calvinists say your future is already chosen by god.
  7. In the Holy Roman Empire (Germany) local nobles were still powerful and didn't want to give money to the Pope. Charles V leads the Holy Roman Empire, and he stays Catholic.
  8. Why was Luther's reform movement successful?
  9. -- He had a printing press to spread his ideas (unlike John Wycliffe)
  10. -- Nationalist leaders don't want to give money to the Pope
  11. -- The princes support Luther because he tells peasants not to revolt
  12. How can we use this as a model for our reform movement (for improving medical care)
  13. -- Use the latest tech (put YouTube ads on political videos)
  14. -- Know who you can swing over. Luther swing nobles who didn't want to give money to the Pope. We could swing doctors who hate insurance companies.
  15. Reformation Who, What, When, Where, Why, How, So
  16. Martin Luther, John Calvin, Urlich Zwingli, Henry VIII, all the people who followed them (princes, peasants...)
  17. Trying to reform the Catholic Church (later, splitting off to form a new Church)
  18. The 1500s (16th Century) 1517 is when Luther publishes the 95 theses
  19. Germany, France, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, England, Scotland, Switzerland
  20. To reform the corrupt church
  21. Printing posters and books
  22. Governments no longer pay taxes to, or obey, the Pope.
  23. Simony
  24. Indulgences
  25. Extravagance
  26. Hypocrisy
  27. Worldliness
  28.
