  33. p02
  34. >Whenever we kill a Kaijuu... a person dies...?
  35.
  36. >W-What does that mean...?
  37.
  38. >.....
  39.
  40. p03
  41. >Aratsugu-san! Want to go shopping with me on the way home?
  42. >I have some plans today... Sorry.
  43.
  44. >Shall we go?
  45.
  46. p04
  47. >The lonely pair.
  48.
  49. p06
  50. >Here.
  51.
  52. >I brought her along, Keiko-san.
  53. >Welcome!
  54.
  55. >Nice to meet you.
  56. >I'm Matsushiba Keiko. I'm one of the analysts here.
  57.
  58. >I'm Aratsugu Yorino.
  59.
  60. >So you've noticed what's inside the Kaijuu, huh?
  61.
  62. >The other world where the enemy resides in,
  63. >and the world we live in now, were originally one and the same.
  64. >However, at some point in ancient times, the world split into two potential branches, creating a parallel world...
  65. >but you already learned this during your training, right?
  66.
  67. >Due to this divergence, some bizarre biomechanical phenomena have occurred in the other world... (hope you like all this technobabble, because I sure don't)
  68.
  69. >Have you already been told about Astral Bodies?
  70. >Yes.
  71.
  72. p08
  73. >These amalgamations of living tissue and machine houses humans within them,
  74. >using the energy of their Astral Bodies to move. They're Biomechanoids, so to speak.
  75. >That's what Kaijuu are.
  76.
  77. >They're using humans as batteries...
  78.
  79. >So the man that has been powering that Kaijuu
  80. >is the same person as the one in the news yesterday?
  81. >Yes.
  82.
  83. p09
  84. >After the divergence, the other world has gone through its own separate timeline,
  85. >but it was still originally one and the same as our own, only with a different history,
  86. >so many of the humans born here also exist there.
  87.
  88. >"Also exist...?"
  89.
  90. >The other world generates a connection between the two humans.
  91. >We call this "shared existence."
  92.
  93. p10
  94. >Even if the two people have different personalities or minor differences in appearance,
  95. >they still share the same Astral Body. That's what shared existence means.
  96.
  97. >Astral Bodies have electromagnetic energy-like properties,
  98. >so they each have a frequency, so to speak.
  99. >Like radio channels?
  100. >Yes, exactly like channels.
  101.
  102. >Having the same Astral Body
  103. >means having the same frequency.
  104.
  105. p11
  106. >Two people with the same Astral Body frequency can't be born in once world,
  107. >but if they are from different worlds, they will have a shared existence.
  108.
  109. >Normally, the two-layered wall separates the two worlds,
  110. >so shared existence should not have an effect,
  111.
  112. >but if there's only one layer of the wall left to separate them,
  113.
  114. >the two Astral Bodies stop being isolated. Since they have the same frequency,
  115.
  116. >They would both connect to the same "channel."
  117.
  118. p12
  119. >And if one of the "ends"
  120. >of the Astral Body link goes out,
  121. >the other end would go out with it as well.
  122.
  123. >In other words, whenever you kill a Kaijuu inside the wall, you inevitably kill
  124. >both the person inside the wall and the person they share existence with in this world.
  125.
  126. p13
  127. >......
  128.
  129. >When a person dies because of an extinguished Astral Body, most of the time,
  130. >the causes of death that manifest in our world are heart failure, stroke, or other similar causes.
  131.
  132. >Then, for the past three weeks...
  133. >I've killed... seven people...?
  134.
  135. p14
  136. >Did you know about all of this, Captain...?
  137. >Yeah...
  138.
  139. >Why... didn't you tell me about it...?
  140.
  141. >The higher ups decided that soldiers who don't find out about it are to be kept in the dark.
  142.
  143. >Most of those who find out end up requesting to be discharged.
  144. >If more soldiers knew about this, it would reduce our numbers greatly...
  145.
  146. p15
  147. >If that happens, we'll lose the fight,
  148. >and the enemy will succeed in their invasion.
  149. >That's why we have no choice but to hide it.
  150.
  151. >I am willing to do anything to protect this world.
  152. >You're a capable soldier. I don't want you to quit.
  153. >That's why I avoided telling you about this.
  154.
  155. >......
  156.
  157. p16
  158. >Now that you already know this,
  159. >decide for yourself what you want to do, Yorino-chan.
  160.
  161. p17
  162. >Captain, why do you keep on fighting?
  163.
  164. p18
  165. >That's because I've already gone insane...
  166.
  167. p21
  168. >Oh, Yorino-chan...
  169.
  170. >Do you need something?
  171. >......
  172.
  173. >Do you have the data
  174. >on the people that I've killed?
  175. >Eh?
  176.
  177. p22
  178. >I'd like to know more...
  179. >about the people whose lives I've taken.
  180.
  181. >Nakajima Takenori, 34 years old. Civil servant.
  182. >Had his first-born son two months ago.
  183.
  184. p23
  185. >Tanaka Naoya, 24 years old. Was seeking employment in the medical food industry starting last year.
  186. >Miyamoto Yoshie, 30 years old, mother of two. Interior designer.
  187. >Sakai Shinji, 42 years old. Automobile mechanic. Had three daughters.
  188. >Sakamoto Daiki, 26 years old. Full-time part-timer and volunteer activist.
  189.
  190. p24
  191. >Shinjou Ami, 16 years old. High school student.
  192. >Horiuchi Kouji, 28 years old. Sports instructor.
  193. >Had plans to register with his girlfriend as a married couple next month.
  194.
  195. >That's all seven...
  196. >......
  197.
  198. >Since when...
  199. >did Captain Kaminoi know about all this?
  200.
  201. >She found out...
  202. >soon after she joined us, after leaving middle school. Just like you, Yorino-chan.
  203.
  204. p25
  205. >She was fighting for half a year, unaware of the truth. That is,
  206. >Until her younger sister passed away.
  207.
  208. >She felt a sense of dread the moment she killed the Kaijuu.
  209. >It was as if her sister died at the exact moment too.
  210. >Then she saw the girl inside the monster.
  211.
  212. >Then, the captain...
  213. >Yes...
  214.
  215. p26
  216. >She killed her sister with her own hands.
  217.
  218. >Why is she...
  219. >still continuing to fight?
  220.
  221. >Youko-chan is searching for the purpose of her sister's death.
  222. >The "purpose?"
  223.
  224. p27
  225. >She said that if she stopped fighting,
  226. >she will never find out the reason why her sister had to die...
  227.
  228. >By ending the fighting with her own power, she wants to prove that the death of her sister had a purpose in saving the world.
  229.
  230. >"Purpose..."
  231.
  232. p28
  233. >Ah, geez! You're getting on my nerves, Four-Arms!
  234.
  235. p29
  236. >Purpose...
  237.
  238. p31
  239. >!
  240.
  241. p32
  242. >Yorino-chan...
  243.
  244. p33
  245. >Are you alright?
  246. >Are you sure you want to keep doing this?
  247.
  248. >I'm the same as you, Captain...
  249.
  250. p34
  251. >If I stop now, Haruka's death will be meaningless...
  252. >I'm scared of that happening...
  253.
  254. >If there has to be someone to take the burden...
  255. >I'll gladly bear all the sin,
  256. >and end the fighting once and for all.
  257.
  258. >I've never met anyone as strong as you until now...
  259. >someone who could fight with me on the same level.
  260.
  261. >I've always wanted a partner
  262. >that I could rely on. Someone like you...
  263.
  264. p35
  265. >I don't know how many more lives we have to take
  266. >before the fighting is over...
  267.
  268. p36
  269. >We must take in all the sin, for the sake of saving the world...
  270.
  271. >Do you want to fall into hell with me?
  272.
  273. >...Yes.
