- Follows the epic Biblical story of the Resurrection, as told through the eyes of a non-believer. Clavius, a powerful Roman Military Tribune, and his aide Lucius, are tasked with solving the mystery of what happened to Yahshua in the weeks following the crucifixion, in order to disprove the rumors of a risen Messiah and prevent an uprising in Jerusalem.
- Roman military tribune Clavius remains set in his ways after serving 25 years in the army. He arrives at a crossroad when he is tasked with investigating the mystery of what happened to Jesus following His crucifixion. Accompanied by trusted aide Lucius, his quest to disprove rumours of a risen Messiah makes him question his own beliefs and spirituality. As his journey takes him to places never dreamed of, Clavius discovers the truth that he's been seeking.
- Hollywood does not make the religious blockbusters it once did with big budgets and big star names to go along. Ben-Hur, The Greatest Story Ever Told, The Robe, The Ten Commandments, Inn of the Sixth Happiness, Quo Vadis, Samson & Delilah and many more come to mind. Now you get strange tales like the more recent Noah or Gods & Kings where the filmmakers treat Christian scripture more as myth. <br/><br/>Risen doesn't have the stars or budget that the old Hollywood religious epics had, but it does hearken back to that style. you may recognize some of the actors, but none have great acclaim (and that's okay) Joseph Fiennes (brother of Ralph) plays the lead. The grown up kid from the Harry Potter movies has a supporting role. Cliff Curtis does a great job as Yeshua (the Hebrew version of Jesus's name). <br/><br/>The Director Kevin Reynolds (Robin Hood, Waterworld, Tristen & Isold, the Count of Monte Cristo) co-wrote the script and directed. It was a very creative way of sharing the crucifixion. The acting is well done and they tried to keep the time period acting though artistic license was taken and of course the main characters aren't factual people. There's a bit of unevenness at times, but overall a very creative story worth the viewing. <br/><br/>8/10
- ...darn good acting. <br/><br/>Not quite the impact of 'The Passion Of The Christ' rather this is the follow-up after the resurrection, that is very very credible of what might have gone down.<br/><br/>The selection of Pontius Pilate played by Peter Firth was fantastic and that's because he has that one great short line when, as the entire Roman cohort is searching frantically for Christ's corpse, Lucius (played by Tom Felton) says "...and if it's true?" (Christ's resurrection) Pilate replies tersely "I'll kill him again!" Good film worth a look - you won't be bored and you won't have the usual 'in your face' hard delivery too many poorly made Christian films are known for.
- Refreshingly unpretentious, Risen reimagines the Gospel as an ancient Roman cop movie.
