- Pronunciation: reduction of third-person pronouns (we reduce he, him, his, her, them)
- We often don’t pronounce the first sound in these words (we lose the ‘h’ or the ‘th’).
- I think he flunked. -> I think ‘e flunked.
- Will he walk her cats? = Willy Walker Katz? (which could be someone’s name)
- “him” and “them” can sound the same when we reduce them:
- “I told him to come.” and “I told them to come.” can both sound like “I told ‘em to come”
- However: if the word is stressed (because it’s at the beginning of the sentence, or because I’m emphasizing it), we don’t remove the first sound
- ---
- p. 94 part A - Fill each blank with the correct pronunciation. (Sometimes you won’t change the word.) Then practice saying each sentence.
- ---
- Homework: p. 99 - Decide if each person is lying or telling the truth.
