  1. When the other heard this, he wondered who it could be who demanded that he joust, for he had seen no knight in this country who dared stand up to him person to person in the joust. At once he headed his horse toward Perceval. And Perceval, who was coming with his whole heart and strength and will, struck him so hard that he pierced his shield and hauberk and drove the point of his lance through Clamadam’s right shoulder. He pierced him well and strongly and knocked him from his saddle to the ground while the lance held. In the fall the lance broke, so that Clamadam was left skewered, in such a state that he could not get up. Perceval did not look at him again, but when he saw that he had lost his lance, he took his sword and charged at Aguigeron, who in turn was coming toward him, his lance lowered. Perceval hated him greatly and reached him with his sharp sword; he struck him so hard that Aguigeron’s helmet did not protect him from feeling the sword right in his brain. He fell from his saddle, hard pressed by death.
