- The issue of whether or not cell phones should be used during school has been a controversial topic of every school system in the nation. In our school system, however, we have failed to address this subject until an incident occurred. An incident in which a student felt obligated to record a teacher in the wrong. It was an incident that struck the nation by surprise, and caused our school system to retaliate by completely banning cell phone usage during class. I am one of the many students and teachers here at North Rowan High School, who believes that cell phones can be used positively, and in many ways, actually help students during lessons and classwork. These are my rationales.
- During my freshman year of high school, iPod touches were introduced to the student population. Members of the school board and staff believed that they would serve as an effective tool, for students would have access to the most infinite source of information, the Internet. However, what they failed to take into consideration was the possible misuse of the iPods. Students began downloading music, games, and using them to text others. The school later began to seize them and students were forced to resort to their cell phones for Internet usage. With the obvious lack of laptops to accommodate each student in the classes, there is a dire need for additional means. Teachers were told that this would be an opportunity for students to work in groups, while sharing a laptop, to complete a given task. However, even as a student, I am able to realize that this is merely the school board trying to make the best of a failing situation. Cell phones can be used to access online work, research topics, and reinforce material learned in the classroom.
