  1. Eddie BFRs two other Droods with the Merlin Glass:
  2.
  3. I reached through the golden armour at my hip, into the pocket dimension I keep there, and brought out the Merlin Glass. One of the guards had just enough time to say, “Oh shit,” before I shook the Glass out to Door size and clapped it quickly over each guard in turn, sending them through the Glass and out into the Drood grounds. Where they could probably have a very interesting conversation with the Serjeant-at-Arms. I shook the Merlin Glass back down to hand-mirror size and put it away again.
  4. “So,” said Molly. “That thing has decided to start working again, has it?”
  5. “When it feels like it,” I said. -From a Drood to a Kill
  6.
  7. For the record, it should definitely be noted that the Merlin Glass working on these Droods is due to its nature as a creation of Merlin:
  8.
  9. She stopped and looked at me thoughtfully. “Okay, why did the Glass work against the armoured Droods, when my magic wouldn’t?”
  10. “It’s the Merlin Glass,” I said. “Can’t help feeling the clue is in the name.” -From a Drood to a Kill
  11.
  12. A good display of both the capabilities and the limitations of Drood armour shapeshifting:
  13.
  14. Two assistants were having a Drood-off, standing facing each other in their armour and trying to outdo each other as they shaped and reshaped their golden strange matter through an effort of will. Experimenting beyond the usual basic humanoid form, seeing just how extreme and grotesque they could become while still holding things together. Golden demons became gleaming angels, switching quickly from horrible propensities to amazing proportions, rocking back and forth as they added extra limbs or shaped exotic weapons out of their armour. But the new shapes inevitably faltered and fell apart, as the wearer’s concentration wavered. The more outré the form, the harder it was for the occupant to hold all the various elements in his mind at one time. One assistant became suddenly top-heavy and fell over. I left them to it. -From a Drood to a Kill
  15.
  16. An unnamed Drood manages to form a functioning bazooka-like weapon out of his armour:
  17.
  18. And down at the firing range, one assistant had armoured up and transformed one golden arm into something very like a bazooka. While everyone else hid behind things, he aimed carefully and fired off a strange matter projectile. The far end of the firing range disappeared in smoke and fire, while the recoil blasted the assistant right off his feet and sent him flying backwards half the length of the Armoury, crashing through a whole bunch of things along the way. Some people just won’t be told. -From a Drood to a Kill
  19.
  20. Filters in the mask of Eddie's armour allows him to spot numerous traps and security measures:
  21.
  22. The lethal security measures were very well hidden; I couldn’t see a sign of them anywhere. I kicked in all my mask’s filters, and then discovered the pressure pads cunningly concealed in the floor, the hidden panels in the walls over robot gun emplacements, and the hidden panels in the ceilings for poison gas nozzles. The Commander really wasn’t taking any chances. -From a Drood to a Kill
  23.
  24. Eddie easily unlocks an electronically locked door with his torc:
  25.
  26. I stood in front of the door and looked it over carefully. Fairly ordinary-looking, with another computer keypad lock. I grinned under my mask. Good enough to keep most people out, but I’m not most people. I pressed a golden fingertip against the keypad and sent a filament of strange matter leaping into the electronic system. It took my armour only a moment to find and input the right entrance code, and then the door swung quietly open before me. -From a Drood to a Kill
  27.
  28. A sword forged from Eddie's armour holds up against a sword and armor plate enchanted by Merlin without breaking (and vice-versa):
  29.
  30. I moved forward, and his sword leapt for my throat. I parried it easily with my golden blade. The two swords slammed together in a shower of sparks, and I think both of us were a little surprised that neither blade shattered. We circled each other slowly, studying each other’s form.
  31. “Merlin gave your family a Glass,” said Sir Bors. “He gave us enchanted swords and armour!”
  32. I cut at his head with my sword, and he parried at the last moment. Our blades flashed back and forth, as we went round and round in the limited space available to us in the gap between the well and the door. Sir Perryvale retreated quickly, out of the way. Sir Bors was a lot more experienced at sword-fighting than I was. I blocked most of his attacks easily enough, but a swift feint caught me off guard, and his sword-point slammed into my ribs. The strange matter held against his enchanted steel, and while he hesitated for a moment, surprised, I stuck my blade into his ribs. His spelled armour held off my strange matter sword in its turn. I swore under my breath. This was going to complicate things. -From a Drood to a Kill
  33.
  34. (Mind you, other items enchanted by Merlin have been shown shattering magic defenses and deflecting Count Video's magic, among other things.)
  35.
  36. Eddie in his armour is so fast that the London Knights appear to move in slow motion by comparison:
  37.
  38. When I entered the next corridor, a dozen armoured Knights were waiting for me. I barely had time to stumble to a halt before they charged straight at me, yelling their battle cries. They quickly spread out to surround me, so they could come at me all at once from different sides. Glowing swords and battle-axes rained down on me as I dodged this way and that, using my armour’s speed to keep them off balance. Moving at my armour’s top speed made it seem as though they were all moving in slow motion, giving me plenty of time to anticipate their movements and avoid their attacks. -From a Drood to a Kill
  39.
  40. Another skirmish with London Knights sees Eddie moving faster than they can react, although he soon slows down due to exhaustion. He also takes blows from more weapons empowered by Merlin, the enchantments of which are strong enough to affect him through his armour to a degree:
  41.
  42. I strode towards them, taking my time, gathering my strength, and then accelerated at the last moment, forcing my aching legs on. The armour’s speed had me in and among the Knights before they could react. I lashed out at them with my strange matter sword, with all the strength my armour could give me. But these Knights dodged my blows, or deflected them with raised swords or lowered shoulders, and stood their ground. The force behind my blows was enough to rock them on their feet, when they landed, but the Knights wouldn’t fall, or fall back. Their swords and axes flared brightly, supernaturally fierce, as they hit me from every side. The points and edges couldn’t pierce my armour, but just the terrible strength behind their blows was enough to hurt me, inside my armour. The spells laid down on their steel were enough to reach me, and damage me, beyond my armour’s protection. And all I could do was take it. -From a Drood to a Kill
  43.
  44. More technological manipulation:
  45.
  46. I looked around the room for hidden surveillance cameras. There were only a couple, blindingly obvious to anyone with a torc. Hardly state-of-the-art equipment. I reached out to them through my armour and overwrote their signal so anyone watching would only see Shaman Bond sitting quietly in his chair. Standard operating procedure for any Drood in the field. How else do you suppose we stay hidden in this age of electronic surveillance? Just let everyone see what they expect to see, and they’re perfectly happy. -From a Drood to a Kill
  47.
  48. Eddie turns the gloves of his armour into buzzsaws:
  49.
  50. I concentrated on my armour, and turned my golden gloves into buzz saws. The vicious blades roared loudly as they spun, and I walked forward to meet the Green Man. My howling blades dug deep into his wooden body, ripping and tearing, sending splinters flying. The great face in the bark screamed. The huge wooden hands beat at me, and I didn’t even feel them inside my armour. One hand tried to pick me up, and I cut it off with my saws. -From a Drood to a Kill
  51.
  52. Eddie pulls Harry's trick and turns the arms of his armour into machineguns that fire strange matter bullets:
  53.
  54. I armoured up, and once again altered its configuration to suit the situation. My golden gloves morphed into two oversized machine guns, and I opened up on the ranks of possessed before me, mowing them down. Without hesitation or mercy. The golden guns fired strange matter bullets, and even the possessed had no defence against them. Their bodies blew apart in messy explosions, thrown this way and that by the impacts, and bodies hit the pavement faster than the crowd could advance on me. I turned around in a slow circle, raking my guns back and forth, shooting everything I could see. Molly moved quickly to keep behind me, picking off the odd target herself, just to keep busy. I could hear her laughing.
  55. “Hardcore, Eddie! This is more like it!” -From a Drood to a Kill
  56.
  57. And then he does it again:A
  58.
  59. I concentrated on my armour, forcing a change in it through sheer willpower. My golden gloves became machine guns again. It probably helped that I was in the Armoury now, where such weapons were not only allowed but actively encouraged.
  60. I opened fire, raking the far end of the Armoury with pulverising firepower, blasting apart absolutely everything in front of me. Everything that stood between me and my enemies. Workstations blew up, equipment was blasted apart, and the rest was just blown away in all directions. It still disturbed me to see such familiar sights destroyed, but I hardened my heart and kept firing. -From a Drood to a Kill
  61.
  62. Eddie tanks a powerful energy beam multiple times:
  63.
  64. And then an energy beam hit me square in the chest. It came out of nowhere, catching me completely by surprise, almost blasting me off my feet. I fell back several steps, but still kept my balance. The impact had been so great I actually felt it, inside my armour. I looked down, and was relieved to see that my armour had held—but only just. There was a great dent in my golden chest, right over my heart. It slowly straightened itself out. But while I was still gathering my wits about me, another energy beam hit me dead on—and another. My armour rang loudly, like a wounded gong, and great golden ripples spread out across my chest, as though a stone had been thrown into a pool.
  65. I was sent staggering backwards, and very nearly did fall this time. I had to fight to stay on my feet. Whatever this new weapon was, it had to be incredibly powerful to almost breach my armour. So powerful as to be almost unheard of. -From a Drood to a Kill
  66.
  67. Eddie can perceive energy beams (presumably made of light) heading in his direction, but he can't avoid them:
  68.
  69. I looked up and saw another energy beam heading my way. I seemed to have all the time in the world to watch it coming towards me, and no time at all to evade it. I wondered if this would be the one that killed me. -From a Drood to a Kill
