Back in the beginning, the multiverse was young. Only a select few worlds were born. The first stories told. Throughout time, as more stories were told, more worlds emerged. The worlds, save for a few, never interacted with each other. Some believe there was a barrier blocking the worlds while others say that passage between worlds were rare, even for worlds with plenty of methods.

That is until long after the First Multiversal War. Gods of the Multiverse began to emerge and enkindle humanity for their magic, technology, and emotions. It was during this time that a God by the name of Yveltal let his stomach howl across the multiverse. A sign that he will bring death and destruction in his wake.

To prevent this, a God named Diancie created a way to harness the energies of one’s soul to feed the monster and stave his attack. However, her choice of who would wield her gift couldn’t have been more disastrous. While they valued the goal of stopping the Destruction God, their methods were harsh. They instead used this power to, through deceiving young teenage girls, crystallize others souls and then corrupt them until they broke.

For a while, these beings, The Incubators, were able to get away with their crimes. That is until a Green Lantern spotted them and brought the situation to the attention of the Green Lantern Corps. While most agree that their means were ruthless, others claim that the ends justify the means and even some claim that, because they’re not in their world, they shouldn’t meddle in their affairs.

Other Lantern Corps got word of it as well. Then word spread to Earth where the Justice League resided. At first, it was just a simple war between the Corps and the JLA. However, it was only a matter of time before the Incubators managed to find out the method behind travelling between worlds. One thing led to another and in time, the Incubators gained massive sympathizers and even people who would wield their soul stealing powers.

Naturally, they’d have opposition, be they people angered by the loss of their friends at the hands of the Incubators or people who vowed to destroy enemies of humanity. However, they were confronted by people who believe in the Incubators’ cause or believed in the concept of Prime Directive. Soon, every world either was involved in the conflict in some way or has yet to be.

The Multiverse entered the Second Multiversal War, known as the Hope/Despair Wars by a select few. The war lasted for fifty years before reaching a stalemate after the ascension of a new God. It was then that one of the Multiversal Gods, a trickster by the name of Hoopa, created portals to a world that wasn’t involved in the conflict until today: Earth.
