Right then—flash, flash!!—streaks of fire fell from the sky. The airplanes
flying over Godzilla’s head had dropped a series of flares to blind the
monster. The strong lights floated down through the air, tracing gently
sloping lines like the ropes of a swing.
Godzilla seemed taken aback. He was still staring at the lights when the
jets made another pass over his head, roaring through the air. Again, they
dropped more flares, creating arcing lines that fell from above, illuminating
the nighttime sky with sparkling light.
Godzilla grew tremendously enraged. Perhaps the lights recalled the
loathsome hydrogen bomb tests he’d been through. He suddenly dove into
the water, then rushed toward the lights, using all his terrifying strength.
The falling flares illuminated the area outside Osaka Bay as brightly as
midday. In the light, the silhouette of the gigantic monster stood out in clear
relief. Everyone watching from a distance shivered with fear.
