Imagine with me for a second
Keith is still Keith when all is said and done and regularly exhausts himself at the training deck (along with Shiro, who's picked up his bad habit) and he doesn't even make it to his own quarters, he just passes out on the couch in the lounge. It's the middle of the night and Lotor can't sleep, so he has to pass by to get to the library, and he sees Keith dead asleep in some impossibly uncomfortable position with Kova cuddling up to his chest.
Lotor gets the softest, fondest smile on his face that he absolutely refuses to let anybody bear witness to and decides, can't have him waking up sore if there's a Galra attack, better take him back to bed, so he bundles Keith into his arms, cat and all, and as he's walking back to their quarters, he can hear Kova purring and Keith's contented breathing.

Something catches his sleeve
Keith, ever the tenacious one, refusing to let go even in his sleep. Lotor feels a pang in his chest but pries off his grip as gently as he can and considers that the end of the matter
UNTIL
Lo and behold, Kova shares Keith's sentiment
He gets up
Stretches out
And leaps onto Lotor's shoulders, meowing in his ear
(He's learned, after 10,000 years, how to take a hint)
So he stays
It makes for a tight squeeze with two bodies and one furry extra, but Keith is nestled so warm against him that he can hardly complain
The last thing Lotor remembers before he falls asleep is Kova's satisfied purr in his ear and the rasp of his tongue against a few stray strands of his hair

He didn't expect it but he's not complaining and just takes a few moments to actually realize where he is and how relaxed and gentle Lotor looks
Kova is snuggled in by their heads now and it's not silent, there's quiet breathing and a noise here and there and it's something that Keith smiles to

Lotor would have days that he grieves for his fallen planet, his people who will never be known for their fullest potential and life that won't continue to grow, stories that have been cut and ripped apart by the seams
Keith doesn't know the feeling as well, but he knows Lotor is hurting and Keith always is there to make sure he's safe. He isn't alone and he did what he could, no one would've been able to predict this future. It doesn't fix the problem, but it makes things feel easier even when it isn't always.

I always have the thought that's where each lion is meant to represent something from Voltron, and as the Paladins become more connected with their lions, more things get subtly passed over
Keith has a heightened ability to feel the emotions of those around him and before long he's picking up the more hidden changes in his teammates and during bad missions, he's always feeling much worse and his heart hurts

there gets to be a time that the Paladins each need to take a break from their lions because with the bonds as tight and as close and they are, some of them are like Keith where other people affect them and they need to readjust to still being human
There will always be a point where Keith can't handle being around people because it hurts him physically and it's not something he can fix, but Lotor has his arms open and is filled with so much love for his kingdom and his family and knowledge and just Keith

Hunk is going to still have some of his lingering anxieties but he's a much stronger character and I want to explore how he came to be more of a Black Paladin
And then shiro
I want to break his character and make him emotional and raw and he's lived a painful life, he couldn't always be a leader
Keith cares so much about Shiro but can't be near him some days because there's so many emotions that are hiding underneath layers of hurt and past experiences that he can't always cope with
Lance is known to stand up for his friends and be cautious and protective, but there's times where that isn't enough and he doesn't have the ability to push himself further just yet. He can stand on the front lines, but he's a scared teenager still who didn't realize what he was getting into. He's protecting everyone, but who's protecting him when he needs it?
