  1. <Harrison_Belingur>: Alright so let's skip to after the flight there unless you have something planned]
  2.
  3. Skyler is flying above Suriname, close to Buck's hidey hole, his wings casting a large shadow over anyone directly below him. He casually sips some coffee, looking around for where Buck might be
  4. Harrison_Belingur steps out onto his balcony sipping a cup of water
  5. <Harrison_Belingur>: Aw fer..
  6. <Harrison_Belingur>: Boy!
  7. <Harrison_Belingur>: Geddown here
  8.
  9. Skyler notices Buck, and swoops down to meet him on the balcony, blowing a large gust of wind in Buck's face as he pushes against his momentum to stop
  10. <Skyler>: Sup.
  11.
  12. <Buck_Bellringer>: It's about 11pm in Suriname and the streets are mostly quiet]
  13.
  14. <Buck_Bellringer>: Not stealth apparently
  15. <Buck_Bellringer>: Come in
  16. Buck_Bellringer enters back into his one room apartment
  17. <Skyler>: Pfft, I'm not paying for a plane. Too easily tracked.
  18. <Skyler>: And expensive.
  19.
  20. Skyler follows Buck inside
  21. Buck_Bellringer rubs his forehead and leans up against a wall
  22. <Buck_Bellringer>: Alright's
  23. <Buck_Bellringer>: I said to come if ya had something on your mind
  24. <Buck_Bellringer>: How's things, boy
  25. <Skyler>: Been better.
  26. <Skyler>: How much, exactly, is... going /on/, at this academy of yours?
  27.
  28. <Buck_Bellringer>: Anything in particular you're wandering 'bout?
  29. <Buck_Bellringer>: The wizards, the super soldiers, the s-men, or the staffs?
  30. <Skyler>: I've figured out enough in terms of the wizards, which is to say nobody knows shit about shit.
  31.
  32. Skyler goes over to the table and takes out his binder, full of scraps and notes and such
  33. <Buck_Bellringer>: Noble houses fight for dominance or some such
  34. <Skyler>: I get the impression that basically everyone higher up on the food chain around there has major skeletons in their closet. Between the tragic pasts, and the poor decision making amplified by being living WMDs...
  35. <Buck_Bellringer>: There wasn't really's such thing as a closet when yer boss could sense if anything was rank
  36. Buck_Bellringer taps the side of his head
  37.
  38. <Skyler>: Oh, yeah. I've heard about that. Bellinger's Bells, or some other catchy alliteration.
  39. <Buck_Bellringer>: Skeletons though are common in our business, kid, you either drown in 'em or you just keep yer fists up and yer eyes up"
  40. <Skyler>: It's pretty easy to drown when half of the individuals are capable of bringing the destruction of the rest of the whole school.
  41.
  42. <Buck_Bellringer>: Not talking about powers yet
  43. <Skyler>: The daughter of a local crime lord is in the S-Men.
  44. <Buck_Bellringer>: I thought we was talkin' about skeletons
  45. <Buck_Bellringer>: Eye on the ball, dingus
  46. <Skyler>: That's not powers, just /power/.
  47.
  48. <Buck_Bellringer>: And you think she's responsible for her father's actions?
  49. <Skyler>: No, but her father's a free man who could do a lot of damage if he's not happy with what he sees.
  50. <Skyler>: And I don't think the leader of a gang should be trusted to be the rational type.
  51.
  52. <Buck_Bellringer>: So?
  53. <Buck_Bellringer>: So what if he does attack
  54. <Buck_Bellringer>: What are you gonna do about it?
  55. <Buck_Bellringer>: Tell Clara it was her fault while he guts yer friends
  56. <Buck_Bellringer>: ?
  57.
  58. <Skyler>: Fight a battle we could have avoided.
  59. <Skyler>: That's what I'd be doing.
  60. <Buck_Bellringer>: By kicking a girl out of her family and onto the street?
  61. <Buck_Bellringer>: Kid, I think we may have gotten ahead of ourselves, I think yer hang up might be a question of what exactly you think a good guy is
  62. <Buck_Bellringer>: Not a hero or a superhero
  63. <Buck_Bellringer>: Just a good guy
  64. <Buck_Bellringer>: Define that term for me
  65.
  66. <Skyler>: Well, let's see.
  67. Skyler takes a seat and leans back, kicking one foot on top of his knee
  68. <Skyler>: A good guy /helps/ people. I'll admit, we generally have the right intentions with that.
  69. <Skyler>: Uh, lessee here... a good guy doesn't needlessly endanger others!
  70. <Skyler>: Good guys don't keep dangerous secrets to themselves
  71. <Buck_Bellringer>: Think broader
  72. <Buck_Bellringer>: You were close with helping people
  73. <Buck_Bellringer>: Not that keeping secrets is a good thing
  74. <Skyler>: Good intentions, try to better the world, give it their all...?
  75. <Buck_Bellringer>: You're thinking goals not actions
  76. <Skyler>: I haven't got any guesses left in me.
  77.
  78. <Buck_Bellringer>: Sacrifice
  79. Buck_Bellringer points to his blind eye
  80. <Buck_Bellringer>: Being a good person, maybe even a hero is about Sacrifice
  81. <Buck_Bellringer>: Bein' tough to just stomach what life serves up
  82. <Buck_Bellringer>: Crime Lords?
  83. <Buck_Bellringer>: Sure
  84. <Buck_Bellringer>: WMDs?
  85. <Buck_Bellringer>: I'll take seconds
  86. <Buck_Bellringer>: The Brotherhood?
  87. <Buck_Bellringer>: My favorite
  88.
  89. Buck_Bellringer pops the cap off a bottle of beer on his table and takes a drink
  90. <Buck_Bellringer>: I want you ta ask yerself are you a tough guy?
  91. <Buck_Bellringer>: Are you a good guy?
  92. <Skyler>: Eh, probably.
  93.
  94. <Buck_Bellringer>: Let me ask you another question
  95. <Buck_Bellringer>: what's with the binder and the notes
  96. <Skyler>: Notes, leads, connections.
  97. <Buck_Bellringer>: On who?
  98. <Buck_Bellringer>: Your team mates?
  99. <Skyler>: And faculty.
  100. <Buck_Bellringer>: You dingus
  101. <Buck_Bellringer>: Ya don't trust em do you?
  102. <Skyler>: Why should I?
  103.
  104. <Buck_Bellringer>: I don't think I need to define why trust is a good thing to you
  105. <Buck_Bellringer>: If you manage ta pull yer head outta yer ass you would know why
  106. <Buck_Bellringer>: Look, kid
  107. <Buck_Bellringer>: I understand being afraid
  108. <Buck_Bellringer>: and suspicious
  109. <Buck_Bellringer>: More than you know
  110. <Buck_Bellringer>: You can imagine there's someone out to ruin the academy or your life
  111. <Buck_Bellringer>: But I heard it
  112. <Buck_Bellringer>: everyday for almost ten years
  113. <Buck_Bellringer>: I heard people trying to ruin my life and my work
  114. <Buck_Bellringer>: If my best friend had a gun in his hand it was just as loud as anything
  115. <Buck_Bellringer>: But that's just a power, an instinct
  116. <Buck_Bellringer>: It's never something you should be defined as
  117. <Buck_Bellringer>: Fear and suspicion are tools, kid, not who you are
  118.
  119. Buck_Bellringer takes a drink and adjusts his shoulders
  120. <Skyler>: Yeah, it must be /so/ challenging, having a power that lets you be aware of any possible threats.
  121. <Skyler>: You must really feel unsafe, when you're actually /aware/ of all the shit going on in there.
  122.
  123. <Buck_Bellringer>: Every possible threat
  124. <Buck_Bellringer>: The floor, I could slip
  125. <Buck_Bellringer>: Ringing like a fire truck
  126. <Buck_Bellringer>: Your wings are like the liberty bell going in my ears this whole time
  127. <Buck_Bellringer>: You're not a threat though are you?
  128.
  129. Skyler smirks
  130. <Skyler>: It must be terrible not to know.
  131. <Buck_Bellringer>: Pardon me?
  132. <Skyler>: I'm trying to give you insight about how /I/ feel.
  133. <Buck_Bellringer>: I don't know either dingus
  134. <Buck_Bellringer>: I don't know if I'll slip on the floor
  135. <Buck_Bellringer>: But my brain sure as hell feels the need to shout at me that I could
  136. <Buck_Bellringer>: You think I don't know what it's like to trust these kind of instincts on everything
  137. <Buck_Bellringer>: You may not hear bells but I know the behavior when I see it
  138. <Buck_Bellringer>: The notes on everyone, what are they doing what's making me feel uneasy what's making them ring
  139. <Buck_Bellringer>: Yer not an animal, boy, instincts and fear don't control your every move
  140. Skyler adjusts his wings some
  141. <Buck_Bellringer>: Or do you really enjoy being scared huddled in a corner unsure of what's happening around you
  142. <Buck_Bellringer>: Trust and Sacrifice, and do it with confidence
  143.
  144. Skyler breathed out through his nostrils, and crosses his legs the opposite way
  145. Buck_Bellringer takes a gulp of beer
  146.
  147. <Skyler>: I'm upset because, let's be perfectly honest, I'm not the /strongest/, or most /influential/ guy around.
  148. <Skyler>: I'm playing around with the same group of people who can level cities through sheer force, or take them apart from the inside out through cunning.
  149. <Skyler>: And all of those people already obviously have something to hide.
  150.
  151. <Buck_Bellringer>: My power is hearing noise constantly
  152. <Buck_Bellringer>: Let that sink in
  153. <Skyler>: Your /powers/ are being aware of all the things I just said, and that none of it can ever catch you off guard.
  154. <Skyler>: And you have /power/ over every individual I just described. Or, at least, you /did/.
  155. <Buck_Bellringer>: What because I sign their pay checks?
  156. <Buck_Bellringer>: You think that gives me power over gods?
  157.
  158. <Skyler>: Because they respected and relied upon you, Buck.
  159. <Skyler>: I'm expendable.
  160. <Buck_Bellringer>: So this is a confidence issue
  161. <Buck_Bellringer>: They're other people, Skyler, they ain't sociopaths
  162. <Buck_Bellringer>: And before you defines my powers for me again let me try and explain this to you
  163. <Buck_Bellringer>: Everything makes noise to me
  164. <Buck_Bellringer>: Loud ringing head crushin sound
  165. <Buck_Bellringer>: And you expect an old fart like me to be able to tell a fist apart in that ruckus?
  166. <Buck_Bellringer>: Not in a split second
  167. <Buck_Bellringer>: Actually gettin' any mileage takes time and focus
  168.
  169. <Skyler>: Sounds like a better power than involuntarily projecting your emotions at all times, and being unable to put on muscle mass.
  170. <Buck_Bellringer>: Seems like yer hang ups might have started long before ya came to the school
  171. <Skyler>: They weren't a problem when my life wasn't suddenly on the line.
  172. <Buck_Bellringer>: Are yer emotions what yer worried about in the middle of a fight?
  173. <Skyler>: Hmph.
  174.
  175. <Buck_Bellringer>: I understand what yer going through, and I want to help you
  176. <Buck_Bellringer>: You can be a good guy
  177. <Buck_Bellringer>: but I know you can do better than that
  178. <Buck_Bellringer>: When a good guy, has a mission
  179. <Buck_Bellringer>: and a passion
  180. <Buck_Bellringer>: Then they're a hero
  181. <Buck_Bellringer>: Do you have a passion, kid?
  182.
  183. <Skyler>: ...
  184. Buck_Bellringer looks at Skyler and raises an eyebrow
  185. <Buck_Bellringer>: Might consider lookin' into that
  186. <Skyler>: Of course.
  187.
  188. <Buck_Bellringer>: Why did you come to the academy?
  189. Skyler huffs a little bit
  190. <Skyler>: I figured that having superpowers has a sort of built-in obligation to use them.
  191.
  192. <Skyler>: And, apparently, hitting on girls was not the most effective use.]
  193.
  194. <Buck_Bellringer>: That's fair
  195. <Buck_Bellringer>: I think it was batman's that said with great power comes great duty
  196. <Skyler>: Something like that.
  197. <Buck_Bellringer>: But that's a comic books
  198. <Buck_Bellringer>: I think you like the idea of saving people and bein' a hero, yer hearts already trying to help people
  199. <Buck_Bellringer>: But this investigatin' paranoia isn't the way ta do it
  200.
  201. <Skyler>: Corrupt heroes are more dangerous than villains. And when everyone pushing so much shit under the carpet, it's worrisome.
  202. <Skyler>: The last thing I want is people getting hurt because nobody's even bothering to look into it.
  203. <Buck_Bellringer>: That's a fair point
  204. <Buck_Bellringer>: I think attacking people's flaws and trying to publicly denounce them is a terrible way to go about it
  205.
  206. <Skyler>: Hmph.
  207. <Buck_Bellringer>: Now I have a few more questions for you before I opens the floor again
  208. <Buck_Bellringer>: Percival Augerson you know him?
  209. Skyler taps his foot a few times, looking down
  210. <Skyler>: Percy. Gold kid. Went to be a politician, right?
  211. <Buck_Bellringer>: Yeah
  212. <Buck_Bellringer>: He's visiting the school
  213.
  214. Buck_Bellringer seems to be racking his old mind considering his words carefully
  215. <Skyler>: To what end?
  216. <Buck_Bellringer>: He's saying it's a social call, but it's to drum up his campaign
  217. <Buck_Bellringer>: You'll probably see him more than you would like
  218. <Buck_Bellringer>: They might say he's a child
  219. <Buck_Bellringer>: But a kid don't ring that loudly
  220.
  221. Buck_Bellringer tosses now empty beer in a milk crate along with a few other recyclables
  222. <Skyler>: Campaign... for what?
  223. <Buck_Bellringer>: Presidency
  224. <Buck_Bellringer>: It's pure delusion
  225. <Skyler>: How so?
  226.
  227. <Buck_Bellringer>: Well he's popular sure, plenty of progressives love him
  228. <Buck_Bellringer>: But there are a lot of bigots in the world, America might be more tolerant but a mutant, who by some standards is only eleven years old?
  229. <Buck_Bellringer>: But still he keeps ringing
  230. <Buck_Bellringer>: too loudly
  231.
  232. <Skyler>: I recall him being around that age, physically. How old is he, actually?
  233. <Buck_Bellringer>: His mind was wiped when he gained his powers
  234. <Buck_Bellringer>: So he's only been 'him' for about 10 years, but his body's whatever he wants it to be, and his brain is a lot older than the one driving it
  235. <Skyler>: Hmmmmm... I can see the concern.
  236.
  237. <Buck_Bellringer>: He was a quiet kid
  238. <Buck_Bellringer>: But he unnerves me, his time in the brotherhood certainly didn't make him a well adjusted person
  239. <Skyler>: I can imagine.
  240. Skyler takes out his notebook and begins making notes
  241.
  242. <Buck_Bellringer>: I know I just told you to trust people more
  243. <Buck_Bellringer>: So don't let this encourage being paranoid, but don't tell him about Suriname, and don't visit again for a few weeks if you must
  244.
  245. Skyler looks up from his paper and a dickish smirk
  246. <Skyler>: We can just call this two ideologies meeting halfway.
  247. Buck_Bellringer raises an eyebrow
  248. <Skyler>: Sounded better in my head...
  249. <Skyler>: So, is there anything in aprticular to know about this kid?
  250.
  251. <Buck_Bellringer>: He's smart, and he's ambitious and I don't think in an entirely honest way
  252. <Buck_Bellringer>: Just don't mention meeting me to him, and tell me honestly if you're going to think about anything else I've told you
  253. <Skyler>: You think he still has Brotherhood connections?
  254. <Buck_Bellringer>: They're both playing ball but he's got a whole 'nother game in mind"
  255. <Skyler>: So he's just a regular mystery until we crack open the case.
  256.
  257. <Buck_Bellringer>: For now
  258. <Buck_Bellringer>: I'm /trusting/ you with this, kid
  259. <Buck_Bellringer>: You're gonna be fine
  260.
  261. Buck_Bellringer pats Skyler on the shoulder
  262. <Buck_Bellringer>: Get some rest, or go home if you can manage
  263. <Buck_Bellringer>: Im getting too old for these hours
  264.
  265. Buck_Bellringer steps away and sits down on the bed
  266. Skyler closes his notebook and slides it into the rings of his binder, and puts that in his bag
  267. <Skyler>: I'll contact you if I can get any leads.
  268. <Skyler>: I'm good to fly still, so I'll just head out. I can make it to a motel around Texas before I get too tired.
  269.
  270. Buck_Bellringer seems to nod as he lays down on the bed he's still built like a tank but his age is rather obvious he doesn't seem frail just weary
  271. <Buck_Bellringer>: Good night, kid
  272. <Skyler>: Goodbye, Buck.
  273. Skyler goes back onto the balcony, flares his wings out as he's enveloped in his aura, and takes off into the sky
