- Homework: fill out and bring in the TOEFL registration form at https://www.ets.org/s/toefl/pdf/iBT_reg_form.pdf, also bring your passport or a photo of the first page of your passport. There is some information you’ll need to find at https://www.ets.org/toefl/ibt/about/bulletin in order to complete the form.
- Before we practice independent writing tomorrow, we will do a fake TOEFL check-in with Kim, as they would do on the day of the test.
- ---
- Recall the format of each speaking task.
- Then record your responses to the ETS past test 1 speaking section.
- Email me at [email protected] and attach your responses. I will give you a score on each one.
- ---
- Independent writing: final part of the test, after integrated writing
- - 30 minutes to prepare, write, and edit your response to a choice question
- - The question could be agree/disagree or some people/other people.
- Do you agree or disagree with the following statement: Keeping old friends is more important than making new friends. Use reasons and examples to support you response.
- Some people like to take the academic courses that Universities now offer over the Internet. However, other people still prefer learning in traditional classrooms. Which do you think is better? Use reasons and examples to support your response.
- ---
- A typical response will have at least 300 words in about 5 paragraphs.
- 1 Introduction: Background and summary of the options you’re choosing between, and a statement of your choice (thesis statement), possibly with a lead-in so we know what to expect in the next paragraphs.
- 2 Supporting point 1 with detail and examples
- 3 Supporting point 2 with detail and examples
- 4 Supporting point 3 with detail and examples
- 5 Conclusion: summarize the reasons and restate your thesis, then a generalization such as a prediction for the future or a recommendation to readers (or your opinion if the question wasn’t directly about that already)
- ---
- The purpose of the details and examples are to explain why your supporting point really supports your thesis.
- Part of the purpose of the introduction is to make it clear what choices you were given even to someone who hasn’t seen the prompt.
- ---
- You can write a framework of transition words and phrases before you add details to your response:
- Some people believe
- because
- However, others think
- because
- In my opinion,
- because
- The first reason is
- For example,
- The second reason is
- For example,
- The third reason is
- For example,
- In conclusion, because of
- I believe.
- In the future,
- ---
- Then decide on the specific reasons and examples you want to use and write them as complete sentences in the framework. (Also, make sure you fix the formatting.) If you want to vary the language so it doesn’t feel so repetitive, do that at the end if you still have time after everything else is completed.
- Be careful with agree/disagree prompts that your thesis statement isn’t, “I agree with the statement.” Imagine that the reader hasn’t read that statement, and simply explain your opinion directly.
