  59. Klaus Kleinstar came from a most peculiar family when it came to the cheery folk of Halflings. The Kleinstar’s were a long line of halfling undertakers, their current residence a few cities away from the capital. They taught about dignity with dying and accepting it as natural but not forcing it. Klaus was taught that death was the great equalizer, for all beings, from orcs to halflings like themselves laid the same and deserved the same rights. The only difference was their coffin size.
  60.
  61. Klaus was the third child, overlooked by his older brother, who was set to inherit the business, and his older sister, who had her options wide open for her. Klaus felt under appreciated growing up, feeling his only unique trait was his lack of traits. So Klaus acted out for attention, even trying to join a thieves group for a day before realizing it wasn’t for him. That simply made Klaus a rather normal halfling with a talent for some stealthier movements. That made all the difference when the Slaughter started. Klaus barely had any warning when they set upon the town, mowing down person after person. He knew he was the throwaway son and no fighter, so he did the only thing that made sense, hid. He tucked himself in the coffin of an orc that was in the ground but not yet buried, sharing it with its owner, the orc. He could only sit in fear as he heard the screams piercing the air, powerless to do anything.
  62.
  63. A day or two later, Klaus crawled out, held a hasty funeral amid tears with all the bodies parts of his family members that he could find, packed his stuff, and ran. He ran and didn’t turn back. He took a long, fairly unplanned escape route, going south, then west, then north to the jungle. He came across countless dead bodies and his respect for his fathers line of work grew. He kept asking himself what his father would do when he was stuck, unconsciously living in his shadow. Regardless, he had eventually made his way to district 7 and built a small shack there.
  64.
  65. Gradually, Klaus started an undertaking business due to it being the only one he knew. He felt like a poor imitation of his father, but he kept trying.
  66.
  67. Many years later, the shack was attacked by bandits while he was asleep. Driven into a rage, he slaughtered them all. This wasn’t his first kill, he had had to kill before in self defense to survive, but here he was acutely aware that the bandits had tried to flee. They had practically begged for mercy and he cut their throats.
  68.
  69. Klaus couldn’t live with himself after that. He had sought out a priest for his sins to be forgiven or something, but the only priest he found was slowly dying from poison. Although the priest wasn’t really helpful, he had reminded Klaus of his homelife before the Slaughter. The Kleinstar’s weren’t very religious, but they respected Kelemvor above all else due to his impartial judgement of the dead, something their family believed in.
  70.
  71. So, in a moment of desperation and being eaten alive by guilt, he prayed to Kelemvor. And Kelemvor answered, tasking Klaus with keeping death impartial and unbiased in return for answers and guidance.
  72.
  73. Klaus set out, leading to the story now...
