- Greetings,
- As both a customer of and investor in Globalstar, I was surprised to
- learn last week that the 2nd-generation WCDMA-based Sat-Fi2/Sat-Fi2
- RAS services are being discontinued. I was even more surprised to
- learn that this discontinuation is occurring with only 6 days' notice
- to affected customers. This leaves me with several questions regarding
- the future of Globalstar's duplex voice/data service in general and
- its 2nd-generation WCDMA duplex service in specific.
- 1) Why was the Sat-Fi2 service, which appears to be the only service
- using Globalstar's 2nd-generation WCDMA network, discontinued?
- 2) Why was the service discontinued with only 6 days' notice to
- customers? Did something happen that required urgent discontinuation
- of the service?
- 3) The discontinuation of the Sat-Fi2 service appears to leave
- Globalstar without any products or services using its 2nd-generation
- WCDMA network. Does Globalstar plan to completely abandon its
- 2nd-generation WCDMA network? Or are there plans to launch other
- 2nd-generation WCDMA services?
- 4) What does Globalstar see as the future of its duplex voice/data
- service? The discontinuation of the Sat-Fi2 service leaves the
- GSP-1700, a handset introduced to the market 15 years ago, as the most
- recent duplex handset sold/supported by Globalstar.
- 4a) Are there plans to introduce newer IS-95-like or WCDMA duplex
- devices (such as handsets) into the market? Does Globalstar view the
- existing GSP-1600 and GSP-1700 devices as sufficient to meet the needs
- of current and future customers?
- I look forward to hearing your response to these questions.
- Sincerely,
- xxx
